Most times when a film fails to perform at the box office, it’s with good reason. Turkey’s abound on the shelves of your local Blockbuster. But there are times when good movies fail at the box office, then go on to become classic. So with this list of six films that lost a lot of money at the box office, I thought I’d start with the obvious duds, then finish up with films that found new life and success after being pulled from theaters.
6. The Adventure of Pluto Nash (2002)
With a budget of $100 million and a box office take of just $4.4 million, this film has the dubious honor of being once of the biggest bombs of all time. It sent Eddie Murphy’s career into a tailspin that landed him in light-hearted comedy hell. Well, at least those movies made money.
5. Cleopatra (1963)
Perhaps the last nail the coffin of epic films, this lavish production had everything going for it. Beginning with the two hottest stars of the day: Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, expensive, lavish sets, 100s of extras, this film went through development hell and barely got finished. To add insult to injury, the film was the highest grossing film of the year! As it cost twice what it made, the film bombed.
4. Cutthroat Island (1995)
Geena Davis, Renny Harlin, two red-hot properties in Hollywood. The result a movie that failed so miserably that it bankrupted Carolco Pictures, earning back a dismal $9.9 million of it’s $100+ million budget. I bet the folks involved in this mess wished they’d cut their own throats.
Heralded as one of the greatest comedies ever made, this film performed so poorly at the box office that it got the Marx Brothers fired by Paramount – and yet it went on to influence Chaplin and even Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove. To say nothing of being the first of a string of classic films the Brothers went on to make after hooking up with MGM. Now ‘that’s the most ridiculous thing I ever hoid.’
2. Watchmen (2009)
Some have called this adaptation of Alan Moore’s graphic novel, ‘The Blade Runner Of The 21st Century.’ Released amidst the current love affair movie goers are having with superhero flicks, this thought-provoking, intelligent, violent deconstruction of the superhero genre did not register with audiences plunking down $$ for heroic thrills and spills. And yet the Director’s Cut and Ultimate Cut DVDs of the film have been steady best sellers since their release. This could be the next classic waiting to be discovered.
Almost universally acclaimed today as one of the best science-fiction movies ever made, Blade Runner was a dismal flop at the box office, barely surviving the opening weekend. In the same year that gave us E.T., Star Trek II, and Poltergeist, this brooding classic fell victim to bad timing and bad editing. Couple those with a soaring budget and low box office and you normally get turkey stew. Yet, this film defied the odds and continues to dazzle viewers and influence artists, writers and directors today.

Funny you say that, my 11 year old was watching the Blade Trilogy this week and after he did he watched Blade Runner thinking it was like 4th part to the movie. he couldn’t get past the first 15 minutes of the movie before he told me Blade 4 sucked. I was confused as I was not aware there was a 4th part to Blade and that I somehow had it. But when he said Blade Runner, I cracked up and told him that movie had nothing to do with Wesley Snipes movies. Funnist thing ever.

I’ve got the ultimate collector’s edition of Blade Runners with all it’s incarnations, love them all to bits, I could just watch the movie over and over again

Bladerunner is a classic. I’m surprised to see that one on the list. But then again, I understand Michael Jackson wasn’t making money before he died, so I guess it’s all in how you manage affairs, eh!

They say that timing is everything and I guess that was what cut the legs out from under Blade Runner. Who would want to release a sci-fi movie in the same year as ET and Star Trek. I’d happily buy my popcorn and sit through all three again once a year.
What is surprising is one such as Cleopatra. Back then, Taylor and Burton were a “hot’ couple, part of tinsels town’s A list. You would have thought that their names alone would guaranteed the success of a movie.

You can add Gridlock’d to that list. Worst movie ever made in my opinion. Even Pluto Nash was more tolerable.

Cutthroat Island is the only movie on this list I’d never heard of. Actually, Cleopatra isn’t that bad a movie, but bad press killed this one, as Liz had stolen someone’s man then decided to start an affair with Burton while making this one; the tabloids were murderous on that, plus a white woman playing Cleopatra.
Duck Soup is great, but I guess we all had the benefit of seeing it years after.
I never wanted to see Watchmen, and when it tanked at the box office I felt justified. Then it came on HBO and I was compelled to watch it, and I actually liked it, though I can see why it fell apart at the box office; a bit too dark & they cut out the audience that might have helped fill the seats with that R rating.

Yea Blade Runner baby! Being 1 at the time, it was one of the first movie to get me hooked on sci-fi.
You missed a good one though. The horrid epic that was Kevin Costner’s Water-World – 100mil to make, produced 30mil at the box office.

I think that Blade Runner is one of the most overrated movies ever. Not bad, but not great either. There are some good actors, and scenes of the future looked very impressive when I first saw it 25 years ago. But the script is weak and it’s very disappointing because the original novel (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?) is actually one of Philip K. Dick’s best works.

Blade Runner is one of my favorites too. I thought they did a really good job with Watchman but is a little high brow for sure.
You should have done a top 7 (lucky #7) and included Water World

How about when film companies cause the movie to be a flop – like the egg in the face move by New Line Cinema when they sold all of the international distribution rights to the Golden Compass which bombed in the US box offices but went on to make over $300 million internationally. Can you say ooops?

So horrific. My dad still gets mad if you mention that film. He wants his money AND his two hours back…
I think the blue penis killed Watchmen… but that said, the attempt to stay true to the original book is what made the movie great. I’m not surprised it’s a film that only makes sense financially AFTER you include all the post-theater run revenue.

I saw Watchmen Director’s Cut and I think that was a good movie but was very loooong. Blade Runner is a classic and I am surprised to see it on this list. Pluto Nash was a weird movie but I laughed a few times. I haven’t seen the others in the list so I don’t know that to say about them.
Added my voice to the chorus of Stumblers praising this post – lots of details here I didn’t know. Definitely did not think Blade Runner bombed: how could it possibly?… oh yeah, it went up against Star Trek II, which is an incredible movie itself.

I can honestly say that I have never seen any one of these movies. I am sure that the vast majority of the world can say the same which explains why they were flops. I can’t believe that Eddie Murphy had that big of a flop. I always thought he was hilarious. I guess his kind of humor is a thing of the past now though.
