This is a guest post by Ryan who works as an internet marketer for a company that deals with insurance for holiday homes. Although he doesn’t personally think people should fake that they are ill, he understands why many people do it.
There are many people out there that pretend to be ill to get off work for a day or two but the thing that hasn’t been explored is for what reason? The fact is that a company could lessen the amount of days that employees are “ill” if they really looked into the problems that they face when they come into work. Here are some of the top reasons people bunk off.
Days out/Vacation
The fact is that everyone wants to go on a day out from time to time and if they don’t have any holiday left in the year then it can be difficult to make a decision on what to do. Things like theme parks and other tourist attractions are actually very busy and sometimes even more expensive at the weekends and on bank holidays which is why many people choose to simply start to cough over the phone to the boss and pop out for the day.
Another thing people do is book holidays that begins on a Friday and simply ring in ill on the day of departure. This is very common but if you are caught out, the consequences will be bad and you may even find yourself getting fired.
Video Games
Although this sounds like a surprising one here, it would seem a lot of people actually go out and get a video game as soon as it has been released to simply sit at home and play it all day. I have to say that when I was in college this is something I did a couple of times simply because I couldn’t wait until the evening to play the game.
Some call it addiction; I call it more interesting than maths!
Come Back To Bed?!
Many people are phoning into work sick if their partner has asked them to stay at home and do the dirty with them all day. Now although many people will be a bit shocked by this I can almost guarantee that if your partner suggested this to you that you would be on the phone to the boss in a matter of seconds.
Sports Event
This one may also seem like a bit of a stupid one but come the London 2012 Olympics I can bet money on there being more people “being ill” than ever before with many of them taking the train up to the capital to watch the athletes do what they do best. I am also betting that many people will also phone into work faking illness to watch the World Cup games this year.
Interviews
This one is the most common reason for people actually faking an illness and it happens all of the time simply because a staff member is too scared to ask for holiday just so they can go and have an interview. Sometimes you can understand because if someone knows you are leaving then they could treat you pretty badly for a number of months which is actually against the law, you are entitled to have an interview!
Trouble Facing Work
Bullying in the work place is nothing to laugh about and if you are being bullied you are twice as likely to ring in sick as anyone else. On top of this people tend to ring in a lot of the time if they really dislike their job. I have to say if it wasn’t for the fact that in my youth I was saving to go to America I would have most certainly faked illness at the supermarket I was working at because working on checkouts sucks.
Hangover
This is another popular one and if you have had a long night out and are still suffering with a headache or in many cases, you are still drunk; it would seem the best way to recover is to stay at home and rest. Although this is argued that you could, genuinely be ill with this, if the boss knows you have been out there is no way they are going to believe you if you are faking it or even if you are ill.
Have you ever called the boss up to tell them that you aren’t feeling well when you are perfectly fine? I would love to hear stories on why you faked illness and if it has gotten you into any trouble with work.

7 Reasons Why People Pull A Sicky…

This is why I left corporate world and started my own business. I like the FREEDOM to do what I want, when I want. I don’t like someone telling me I only have 10 days this year to go somewhere.

One reason from me is that lack of motivation in current working.

Being in a band and bringing up children is a full time job – no chances of pulling a sickie here… When I used to work a regular job I’d drag myself in even if I wasn’t feelling 100% or needed to be sent home after. I just feel so awful if I let people down. I suppose it’s different in a corporate environment though.

Hmmm….I wonder if there is anyone that didn’t do this at least one time. I also did it a few times and I never had any problems with my bosses :d

In my youth before I really started to see what hard work could do for someone I had my times, I called in for a 2 week stretch once to go to the beach and work on my tan. Haha. DUMB.
