Welcome to another interview in my new series, as mentioned before each week I will be interviewing a fellow blogger who has kindly answered my blogging questions, so let’s get on with it…
Q: Please tell my readers a little something about yourself?
A: I often wonder who am I. Am I a retired computer guy with 30 years of experience in microcomputers, a retired school teacher and counsellor with 10 years of experience in the schools, an innovative baloney slicer who had the first video vending machine in Pennsylvania? Am I a father or grandfather? The role you chose to play is the one you are at the time of the show. Some roles overlap and are played simultaneously. Some roles are never to be repeated. I am someone who cares about the people around me, who wants to improve the society we all live in, who hopes on a daily basis to leave the planet a little better than it was the previous day and who is cognizant that the impact I have on the world is minimal. Tilting at windmills is a part of my character as is a deep love for all those who need to be loved. In my own mind I am a complex, multi-layered, unique character in the kaleidoscoping drama of life.
Q: So tell me about your blog, when and why you started it and how you came up with the name for it?
A: My first blog was Money Saving Tech Tips and Philosophic Musings, My experiences owning and operating a small computer network support company for 25 years provided me with the impetus to write about saving money in the tech arena. The philosophic part came from a need for self expression beyond tech.
My second blog Pick of the Literate, chronicles one of my first and I guess my most enduring love of reading. I read voraciously and it seemed a natural extension to review books.
Q: Do you find blogging takes up a lot of your time?
A: Blogging does take up a lot of my time. I am now embarking on a 4th career, that of an author. My first preschool book, “I Like To Whine” is currently in print at Amazon. My 2nd preschool book, “Daddy Takes A Trip” will be up on Amazon on the last week in October. The illustrations for me first pre-teen adventure are nearly complete and I am working on a sci-fi/urban fantasy. So writing of some sort occupies the bulk of the time I have left after I babysit for my grandchildren.
Q: Where would you say most of your traffic comes from for your blog?
A: Readers looking for reviews that contain no “spoilers” are probably a major part of my book blog audience. The economy’s state probably has driven price conscious tech buyers to my tech blog.
Q: Do you use social networks to promote your blog and if so which ones would you recommend to other bloggers?
A: I use Facebook but have not really scratched the surface of it’s potential. FuelMyBlog, BookBlogs, BlogCatalog, LibraryThing and GoodReads are all part of my weekly reading and self promotion.
Q: If you could give some useful advice to new bloggers, what would it be?
A: The best advice I have received as a fledgling author is to write. Don’t talk about writing, just sit down and write. With the Internet providing a worldwide community, someone is going to find what you write interesting.
