Got the message in my WordPress dashboard today that WordPress 3 was available to upgrade to, “Awesome” I thought, so I clicked the upgrade button and got ready to use the new version of WordPress….
But a problem arose while trying to upgrade and I kept getting the error:
Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 2516315 bytes) in /home/mydomain/public_html/blog/wp-includes/http.php on line 1363
OMG! So now it would be a case of doing a manual upgrade, which I hate doing as it seems to be such a cumbersome method, so after checking with a friend, who’s in the know with these sort of things they recommended me doing the following to make this work.
- Open up the file wp-settings.php which is in the main directory of your WordPress installation
- Find the line that reads define(‘WP_MEMORY_LIMIT’, ’32M’);
- Change it to define(‘WP_MEMORY_LIMIT’, ’64M’);
- Then start the upgrade process again.
- Hopefully everything should have updated for you.
The problem is memory limit and by doing the above you give your PHP a little more memory to play around with and therefore giving WordPress that extra elbow room it needs to update correctly.
Please note, I’m not a PHP expert, so please BACK UP you WordPress installation before any upgrade that you make.

I get that same problem quite often when I upgrade and what you have done is exactly what I do to overcome it.
I’m not going to upgrade to WP 3.0. I’m going to wait until WP 3.1. There’s bound to be a lot of bugs.
I’d be interested to see how you get on.

I upgraded to the 3.0 Thelonius yesterday as well, Karen. didn’t run into the memory errors that you came across though. I used the “Tools” function on admin panel. The “upgrade” link worked flawlessly.
Cheers!!
And have an awesome weekend!!

I decided not to upgrade, there is always the possibility that this would happen. I always a few weeks before doing a major upgrade and I test offline before making the upgrade.
As for your code, it looks right.

Thanks, it seems to have done the job, WordPress 3 is a tad faster than the previous version.

Well done on your upgrade Karen, I am always very weary of upgrading as I have been burnt pretty hard in the past. And I blog on Drupal which is like rocket science compared to the fairly user friendly WordPress. Don’t ask me why I’m on Drupal, force of habit probably…

I upgraded my 2 smaller sites this morning with my hosting provider “SimpleScripts” I myself set my max memory to 128mb but be careful if you are on a shared hosting plan, your hosting provider may limit you to 50mb and if you set your limit too high your blog will have random 500 errors or crashes when visitors access as your memory goes over your hosting provider threshold and they start killing your apache/php processes.

Thanks for the advice, I think that maybe one of the reasons I was told to set it at 64mb

I’m holding off on 3.0, not because I’m afraid of WP bugs, but of incompatibilities in the flock of plugins I use in each blog. I’m afraid to see how many will get broken by this upgrade.

3.1 corrects most issues 3.0 (or any other new WP version) finds. I always wait.

Funny thing is, I didn’t wait! The ‘upgrade link’ was to tempting to not click, so I did. Things went fine. One small glitch with my theme but otherwise things are running smoothly. Probably the one plugin I’m worried about is Lucia’s Linky Love. I checked and there hasn’t been an upgrade in a while!

ixed thought about upgrading to WP or not. Anyway, I also decided to wait a while longer on Thelonious as I use Thesis and it appears that there is some bug on WP3 that is not compatible. So mainly because of this, I will wait until Chris of DIY Themes fixes the issue and then upgrade. hopefully by that time the .1 version will be out.

Glad the upgrade went smooth for you. I too am waiting a bit for all the plugins and the themes I use to be updated to support V3.
Since I have two seperate blogs right now, I’ve also wondering what if any is the benefit of combining them into a single install now that MU is part of the core wordpress code.
