I was talking to a friend the other day and we came up on the subject of blogging and their response was “blogs are just about tech, making money and website stuff like SEO etc! What is SEO anyway?”
So after explaining that blogs are much, much more, I decided to knock up a post, for those of you out there in computer land that when they hear the word “blog” it sends shivers down their spines.
OK. Blogs are much more than just for writing about how to make money and how to get loads of hits to your blog to enable you to get more money, yes I know I have been guilty in the past of blogging about SEO ([intlink id="handy-websites-seo-fanatics" type="post"]Search Engine Optimization[/intlink]), but, I don’t bang on about it every single post.
I do have my favourite subjects such as Twitter and it has been a popular subject here on Blazing Minds, but I would personally like to think that my blog has a bit of something for everyone and aren’t really afraid to remove myself from a set niche and go into the world of blogging with an open mind.
Blogging is fun, it’s a chance for the blog owner to vent their thoughts, or on some blogs their darkest secrets, other even use the blog as a way of getting their day-to-day chores off their chest. Some post recipes etc on a daily basis, some of my favourites
When it comes down to it, there are loads of SEO blogs out there and we’ve all probably read them and gleamed as much information from them as possible, but there are so many other blogs out there that deserve that illusion of only been there to make money removed from the thoughts of people who do not understand blogs.
So when someone says to you that blogs are only for one thing, then put them straight, send them to this post and other sites that are not in a set niche of SEO and making money from blogging, they’ll be surprised in what they can find

There does seem to be myth that blogging is writing about technical stuff…but it is a myth. Although my blog is about how to blog etc, I also mention dancing, dieting (always on a diet, I am), exercise, gardening…you have to bring in a bit of fun sometimes.
I have one client who has just started a blog about Olives and all the things you can do with them!

A quality blog is one that allows you to read about more than one subject. A blog that writes only about SEO will become boring and people will stop reading it but a blog that writes about SEO, about Twitter for example or other interesting stuff will have more readers.

I really don’t read tech blogs to much any more because it seems to be the same stuff over and over. There are so many types of bloggers and it is fun to read the different niche blogs.

Karen, I have to agree with you. All I tend to see is the same type of blogs. If there other bloging niches out there, it seems there are only few blogs for the different sites. I tried building a blog in another niche but my knowledge is limited and that blog was unsuccessful. So now its a for fun one that I will eventually start working on again once my current blog is stable and I can go a few days without working on it.

I like to think that Blazing Minds is popular because it has a wide variety of subjects, but I think some of the success is down to commentators like yourself that take the time to stop by and comment on it’s variety

Hello Karen,
Gee. I had thought that most readers felt bloggers blogged only about celebrity news, family (like Mommy bloggers), and politics… oh, and the incoherent rants of personal blogs.
They should get to know more of us who blog about blogging, marketing & promotion, SEO, and social media.
Can you think of any blogs like that? (chuckles)

Hmmm … Now let me think
I find people who aren’t that familiar with blogging often wonder who even reads blogs. I’ve had many people think a blog is just a person babbling their personal life on the internet and they wonder why anyone would want to read that – other than for the voyeuristic nature of it. The world of blogging is as vast and complex in its content as the grains of sand in the ocean – or really really big depending on how poetic you want to get.

I run a directory of craft blog sites and I also write for Folksy the handmade website – it’s a niche thing, you could say it’s all mummy bloggers, all crafty bloggers or all techy bloggers but it’s just who your following on twitter and facebook – it’s bound to start seeming ‘familiar’ after a while! The good thing is that all of those bloggers are interested in seo even if they don’t yet know what it means!
I find using stumbleupon set to ‘stumble-through’ blogspots a great way of finding new blogs on different subjects – it’s nice to follow a broad array of bloggers.

True – it shouldn’t be just about SEO… but if you look at all the comments (and CommentLuv links and keywordLuv etc), if there’s one topic I see more often than most, it’s SEO.
Ironic… that’s probably one of the harder terms to rank for, eh?

I have noticed that in the ComLuv plugin, but I suppose it could be the way blogs are currently going, shame really

We post one of two types of blog entries. The first is a specific phrase we feel a person would be searching for, and the second is about a community event that we can then post on Facebook. I hate posting anything business related on Facebook and I think the folks that are fans appreciate that. Blog entries about fun stuff to do is our favorite kind of blogging, and blogging about a search phrases is kinda boring but a necessary evil.

Agreed with your post. I will say that while some blogs do achieve a greater diversity of entries on various topics, it definitely feels like marketing/SEO/technical/make money online blogs have sucked all the oxygen out of the blogosphere. I’m not the only blogger struggling to get people interested in something different.
I think the only way around this is that we have to make a concerted effort to bring real diversity to successful blogging, and bigger bloggers have a responsibility to do this, as opposed to telling us the same thing over and over again. It’s very telling that the substance of blogs hasn’t changed dramatically since I started blogging seriously about 5 years ago.

This wonderful world of blogging started with digital diaries, isn’t it?
It’s funny, if I had to generalize about blogs today I would probably say: ah, those are gossip and celebrity and diet, hairstyle and beauty blogs… That would probably only reflect what *I* am interested in and searching to read!
Today there are blogs for any kind of interest, any niche… I can surely attest to that!:)

For better or worse, I rarely get out of my niche; sometimes on purpose, as I tend to get sucked into the ‘fun’ and ‘waste’ a day away. lol
I too will eventually bring back my personal blogging, which will surely be a free-for-all from within my mind…a warning will be squarely placed for all that enter.

Hi Karen, I have also noticed that there are very few blogs on other niche like shopping, business. I am doing SEO on different niche site like shopping, computer/technology. I want to build link by making comment, so that I can get relevant link for my client website. But there are very few blogs on this niche.
So it is better to blog on other niche also rather than blogging, SEO, social media. By this way we can learn more on other topic.

Nice post Karen. I agree we shouldn’t write as much about SEO and making money online. I am also sick of hearing the same advice over and over again. And still I am giving the same advice myself. I think it’s because SEO is so essential for everyone who is interested in getting lots of traffic to its website. What do you think?
Twitter: Ileane
Karen, your friend asked you a very good question. It shows how many people have misconceptions about blogging. It’s funny how they heard of SEO but didn’t know what it means. I find that really funny because I know what is stands for but I’m still not sure I really know what it means myself.
Thanks for the post.

There’s no doubt that there are still millions of clueless people out there that will never even come close to understanding what a blog is about. Actually there are probably close to as many bloggers that have no idea what blogging is about
