Something that probably didn’t occur to most business owners when they first started their business was; how many people would search online for my Brand?  Generally speaking the answer would be none (if you are a new business).  So should you do some research online first to see if there is a pot hole in the mainstream online world that you could fill in?

This is a possibility that could soon be effecting how companies brand themselves, and gives new entrepreneurial business owners a way in to compete with larger Brands.  Google is a strange beast; with its search engine algorithm changing and being “beefed” up all the time.  Currently there are about 200 ranking factors that Google uses to identify where websites should be ranked in the SERPS (Search Engine Results Page).  Each one of these has a set amount of weight that identifies how important it is, so some are more important than others.

Your websites URL (so this one is: blazingminds.co.uk) is also in one of the ranking factors.  This is believed to be one of the more important values as well.  It has been argued that this ranking factor isn’t as important as it has been made out to be, but SEO’s like me still believe it to be very important.  Recently I have been noticing some of these “smaller” websites appearing in the SERPS on page one for very competitive terms, even out ranking some big brand websites.  One area that I like to think I know a thing or two about is the holiday district.  Virgin Holidays are one of the biggest tour operators in the UK, and utilise internet sales very effectively.  For the past 5-6 months Virgin holidays has ranked at number 1 for the term Caribbean holidays”, one of the most competitive terms in the “luxury holiday” industry.  However over the past few weeks they have been overtaken by a much smaller company called “Caribbean Connection”.   See image below (the sponsored links are covered, to save confusion):

This website rarely appeared on page one about 3 months ago, and now it is a strong holder of position one.  Every now and then there is a tussle between Virgin and these guys but they still manage to pull forward.  To be fair they do have a “nicer” site and it is their homepage that ranks for this term, but Virgin rank number 1 for practically every other Caribbean country holiday.

It is this sort of adversity that shows even the small business owner can trump a larger one online, with some good SEO know how and the sense to utilise the ranking factors Google has made public.  Your URL could be the factor that helps you to appear at the top of Google for your businesses best selling terms!

I think you raise a good point here Marcus but I also think that when starting up a new site it is important to not take things too far. For example if you are a travel company that specialise in holidays to Greece you should not go in with the domain name, holidaystogreeceholidaytogreeceholidaystogreece.co.uk. Believe it or not I have seen companies do this and it doesn’t seem to help them at all. On top of this if you do this you will not be able to expand the business at all.

Many companies such as Play.com do not have things like Xbox games in their domain name but manage to secure many of the top spots when it comes to the SERPs. Of course this is down to the fantastic PR team and the SEO guys I am sure they have in house.

On the other hand if you are going for a small niche and let’s say you own a villa in Porto Spain then naming the site Portovillasspain would certainly be a good idea. It does seem that Google is starting to pay attention to this and I believe it is only fair as these sites with keywords in their domains are often the smaller ones that cannot afford to pay for people to help them rank in the SERPS.

I also have to agree with this. At my normal 9-5 job I’ve done a lot of websites for smaller, local companies. Some of the clients will be dead set on a domain name, but others are open to ideas. I’ve found that the ones with “natural” keywords do the best. By natural keywords, I mean words that would feel natural if they were to be spoken. For example, ask a client what they do and who they are, and work with that for the domain name.

I agree with Ryan. Keywording your domain name is awesome if you can do it unobtrusively. However many have started whining months later about how their domain name has pigeon holed them into not being able to do anything else smoothly.

  3. That’s interesting about the cruises, guess there is hope for us minnows after all :-) And I agree with Dennis in that it’s great to have a URL that matches searches but it’s very pigeon holed and a nightmare when you realise you are to niched.

As important as domain names are I wonder why I never took advantage of them until just recently. I suppose it was because the name mattered more to me than the SEO aspect of it. Still, if one promotes it properly and is seen to do all the right things it won’t be too long before his ‘brand’ gains some recognition.

Your article is a good example of how efficient SEO really is. Many people don’t give too much attention to it but they are making a big mistake.
