I’m one of the casualties of financial downsizing.

Thanks to the housing bubble, Wall Street’s credit default swaps, and money pissed away on the Iraq War, which sent the country on a trip down the rabbit hole in search of weapons of mass destruction.

To this day, I’m convinced the WMDs were hidden inside Cheney’s pants.

I would be remiss not to thank the lobbyists and special interest groups for helping to solidify the top 1%’s control of the country and its wealth.

With approximately four lobbyists to every Congressman, the “we” in “we the people,” is no longer relevant and should include two e’s instead of one, as “wee the people” no longer wield the power in this democracy that was the founding fathers intent.

Yes, we vote and our votes decide who serves in Congress. However, once we cast our ballot, the power of the people is then deferred to the cigar chomping chaps wearing $38,000 shoes. They follow the money to the Congressional closet filled with Armani suits and cash stuffed inside each pocket.

I find unpaid bills, not dollar bills, stuffed inside my pockets. Occasionally, I’ll find change, which elicits a jingle, not a crinkle.

My change would only pay for a bag of chips in the Congressional vending machine, not a piece of legislation. That machine is in the smoke-filled room in the back.

Though, I do enjoy the same truncated work week as a Congressman. My week begins on Tuesday and ends on Thursday.

Because I start my week on Tuesday, I always feel like I’m a day behind. I think calendars should be reprinted to reflect the new work week. There’d be bigger squares to write in and more white space for ads.

It makes cents for the calendar companies but not for the 99%.

We have the top 1% to thank for shorter work weeks and our legs dangling in air, while their fat assets abuts asphalt on the other side of the scale.

Where’s the checks and balances in that? It’s not in the body weight of the masses. It’s in the bloated cheeks of several asses.

So, lift your champagne filled glasses and toast your wealth while we grab another beer off the shelf.

Sour grapes? I think not. Just a fine whine.

The sentences that are handed down to people convicted of committing crimes in this country are always a cause for debate as everyone has strong views on the subject of prison terms.

Many of us have been forced to defend a position where we feel that people have either been given too long, or in most cases, too short a sentence. A current cause for debate is the fact that violent criminals can get their sentence reduced by as much as half if they admit their guilt before the case comes to trial.

The feelings that we have when it comes to sentences which we feel are too short is naturally one of disgust, anger and frustration, however, thanks to restrictions on court reporting and biased, sensationalised media coverage we often don’t have all the facts and circumstances pertaining to a particular case and the state of mind of the offender.

In response to this some regional probation services are teaming up with Magistrates Associations for presentations which members of the public may attend so that they can get a different perspective on sentencing and the other corrective means that the justice system has at its disposal.

The probation service feels that after learning more about the alternatives that are available to implement for deal with convicted criminals, along with the different personal circumstances in which the offender finds themselves, many people will garner a better understanding of what sentences should be passed when handing down sentences designed not only as punishment but also to facilitate rehabilitation.

While few can doubt that strong sentences with a heavy contingent of punishment will deter many casual criminals and offenders there is also evidence which suggests that alternative sentencing which is offered by probation services can also have a positive affect on the rate or recidivism.

Advantages in community sentencing over custodial include lower cost to the taxpayer as well as the offender actually doing something positive to improve the environment in which his or her society exists.

These events should be interesting to anyone who’s involved in the criminal justice service and members of the public who are interested in justice and rehabilitation.

While they might not change anyone’s minds about the sentencing process, and the gravity of sentences but it will however give those who attend a great deal more information upon which they are able to base their opinion.

Dan Cash wanted to be a probation service officer but is now a features writer. If you’re thinking of looking for probation jobs there are many different roles to be filled.

Not only is America suffering from an economic crisis, it’s caught in a vicious cycle, too, caused by the banks that helped fuel the crisis.

After the bottoms fell out of the bank vaults in 2008, because banks approved bad mortgage loans that brokerage firms then sold to their customers as credit default swaps, the banks became tightwads, making it difficult for small businesses and conscientious bill paying Americans to borrow money, thus creating a worse economic crisis and a tidal wave of debt.

To wrap this up in a lovely decorative package, since many banks approved bad loans back in 2008 due to their greed, we, the taxpayers, who had to bail them out, can’t get a loan from the banks we bailed out because the banks are afraid to approve loans to people who loaned them money in the first place. Whew! That was exhausting.

So, the banks got out of debt and are collecting interest on our money, while, we, taxpayers, who had to choke up cash for the loans, are accumulating further debt.

What’s wrong with this picture besides the dark, blurry images? The disproportionate wealth.

Why do politicians allow banks to get away with this? – Because bank and financial lobbyists stuff their pockets with cash. Which begs the question – Who’s running the country – politicians or bankers?

If this unethical practice persists, the banks will continue collecting interest on our money and growing their profits, while, we, the taxpayers who rely upon the banks for loans will be forced to file bankruptcy, or foreclose on our homes and essentially lose everything we’ve worked hard to achieve in our lives.

We, the conscientious bill paying Americans that helped subsidize the people who could not afford to pay their mortgages and the banks that couldn’t afford not to loan them the money, are paying for their mistakes.

And we’re not alone.

Many small business owners, who pay taxes and are struggling because they can’t get bank loans, can’t add jobs to the economy, while many corporations that are not paying taxes and not struggling, are creating more jobs overseas since it is cheaper than creating jobs at home, and because of it, are growing their profits in offshore bank accounts.

Without good paying jobs and disposable incomes, how can conscientious bill paying Americans continue to buy merchandise produced by corporations? Without paying customers, how can corporations maintain their bulging bottom lines and their fat assets?

In this new America, banks won’t approve loans to conscientious bill payers experiencing economic hardships unless the conscientious become debtors and/or default on their loans. I know this to be true. The bank told my husband so when we tried renegotiating our mortgage payments, to get back on our feet, after being simultaneously unemployed.

“Come back after you’ve filed bankruptcy,” the perky bank rep said. “Then, we can work something out.”

Who’d have thought that diligent bill paying and an excellent credit rating would be a detriment for getting a loan?

So the vicious cycle goes … folks who worked hard to keep their finances in good standing, who hit a bumpy patch in the road, will never sit in a loan desk chair unless they become debtors and follow the liability inclined into the financial hole the banks keep digging for us.

Yet, despite the banks unethical loan practices and politicians money snatching, the most disturbing thing of all —

Why does the media focus on pictures of a Congressman’s dick, when the real dicks are standing on the sidelines watching the ground shake beneath the conscientious taxpayers’ feet, as jagged cracks emanating from the banks financial earthquake, grow wider across America until neighborhood after neighborhood collapses into the schism that now runs deep across the land?

The travel industry is looking forward to the April glut of Bank Holidays and so are the rest of us!

A number of other factors, not least the royal wedding have encouraged British holiday makers to take holidays abroad this spring. The government said ”Here, have a day off for the royal wedding” and, with clever use of accrued holiday, taking thee days off will give you a break of almost a fortnight. While the government was hoping The Great British Public would stick around and spend Spend SPEND on bunting, Union Flags and cake, many people demonstrated their overarching ambivalence toward the nuptials and booked holidays in other, foreign destinations instead.

When a survey was taken earlier this year of 3,000 travellers 28% said that they would be using the wedding augmented Easter break to go somewhere that they had never been to before. Luke Nathan from Travelsoon, who conducted the survey said: “The news that British travellers are becoming braver in their holiday choices is really a very positive one.” He goes on to point out that many travel companies are sending back figures which show that some destinations are up 180% compared to this time last year.

47% of the holidaymakers said that yes, the state of the economy was a contributing factor in their holiday plans and that they were being careful, looking for cheap deals on online rather than going through traditional high street travel agents. Only 18% of the travellers said that they had booked through the high street retailers, 55% said that they would look for the best deals and discounts by searching online.

While the news might not be great for the traditional travel agents it does indeed spell bargains for the canny shopper. If you don’t have a particular place in mind that you’re especially drawn to then it’s a great idea to find deals on places that you’ve never been to before. Taking advantage of the long weekends and low cost holidays means that the traveller wins all round.

It’s not all sandy beaches and clear blue skies though, in a different survey conducted by Badenoch & Clark staff said that they were unsure about the leave that they were getting on the Royal Wedding Weekend. A quarter of office workers report that they still don’t know yet if they are indeed getting the Friday off. Although the government said it would be a bank holiday, many people say that they haven’t heard anything concrete from their employers on the matter.

The survey found that, because of the lack of communication, that the uncertainty could lead to anger and disgruntlement between employers and employees. In London the survey found that a third of people are still wondering what’s going on as they have yet to be told definitively what their company’s position is on the wedding.

Lynne Hardman from Badenoch & Clark said “Employers have a duty to communicate clearly and effectively to their workers. This includes decisions on holiday allowance,” and that “employers may find workers react badly to what appears to be a last-minute decision – leading to low morale amongst employees.”

She went on to say that managers needed to give a clear direction on holiday allowance, employers aren’t obliged to give their staff public, traditional and bank holidays off as additional leave and the government’s announcement of a bank holiday doesn’t increase a worker’s entitlement to time off under Working Time regulations.

Dan Cash has volunteered to work on the day of the wedding. This work will mostly involve sitting on a beach drinking wine and eating cheese but he’ll be writing about luxury holidays and river cruises as he does it, and that’s work, right?

So ITV in their wisdom have decided to bombard us yet again with a show that may be popular with the celebrity hungry public, but not with me…

That’s right “I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here” is back on our TVs as of the 14th November, a show where celebrities who have either got a failing career or need to be even more in the public eye, decide they are going to spend time in an Australian jungle doing things that no other “sane” person would even attempt to do.

Before anyone asks, yes I have watched the show and I still think that’s it’s a complete waste of time and money!

I dare say that those “celebrities” and I say that loosely are looking forward to spending time with the comforts they are used to, but the question often arises of, why?

As I mentioned earlier, most of them have usually been out of the limelight for a while and this is a chance for them to get back in the public eye, but to me, I just see the fiasco as completely pointless, not only have we just been put through the pain and suffering of the The X Factor, but now we have to have our TV schedule littered with this dribble. What next the return of Britain’s Got Talent, oh that’s back spring 2011!!!

Ok, I’m steeping on the toes of those that love the The X Factor and I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here, but come on isn’t it time that TV stations have something fresh and interesting on, and not a bunch on wannabes and has beens prancing around the TV making complete idiots of themselves, obviously not!

So this is the way that TV is going, celebrity everything, just because something has been popular and has a following, doesn’t mean that we all love it, so I’m preparing myself for breakfast shows with “did you see I’m A Celebrity last night?” and “Here’s the latest from the camp” and so on and so forth. Yes it’s on lots, but please, please stop ramming it down our throats everyone 20 minutes!

I have posted before on my blog about these celebrity shows and how much they annoy me, but hey this is the Monday Moan and I have every right to whinge, it’s my blog!

Sometimes you may hear some people saying “Young people today, they have no manners!”, but between me and you, the readers of my blog, I’m here to tell you that it’s not just young people who have no manners, it’s also the older generations that seem to have a complete disregard for good manners and polite etiquette.

So, the other day I was out and about, doing my normal amount of window shopping and with stores having doors!, I know you can see where this is going right! (in a Stewie Griffin voice), after walking through the doors, I held them open for an elderly gentlemen, at which point he just walked through and never said a word, not one iota!

I shrugged this off but then on the way out, I held the door again for another elderly woman, nothing, but the teenager behind her saw me holding the door and hurried up to walk through and he said “thank you”…

The same goes when in a supermarket when you’re looking at something on the shelves, people will just walk straight in front of you in that two feet gap between you and the shelves and not such as a simple “Sorry, excuse me”.. GGGRRRRRR, it just makes me so mad, maybe it’s because I was brought up with manors and I go out of my way to say please, thank you, excuse me etc. But come on does it take so much effort just to open your mouth and say such simple terms? Or even better, don’t walk in front of people when they are looking at things or you may just find a foot sticking out to trip you over!

So come on people don’t knock some of the younger generations, it seems some of them do have manors and the older generations have forgotten to use them or they consider themselves void of any polite communication to anyone who is willing to take the time to hold open a door, or more out of their way.

Those of you who have been following me on Twitter, will have seen a couple of weeks ago, me tweeting about some careless git who had caught the trim on my new Mini Cooper, suffice to say I was extremely upset!!!

I wouldn’t have minded if whoever had done it, had left a note on the windscreen saying, “I’m so sorry, I caught your car, here’s my number to contact me”, but no, not a thing and thanks to this, I’m not going to swear, person it has just cost me £83.92 to have the part replaced and fitted, I mean come on, I’m not made of money in the first place and this is a major chunk out of my weeks wages to have this done.

Now my Mini Cooper looks how it should with a nice shiny trim to match the rest of the car, but it just so annoys me that people just give a damn, I mean not as if it’s a major repair job, I know it cost a bit, but it’s not as if it was the front wing, thank goodness, but you would think that people would admit to doing the it and not just drive away and get away with it.

I hope that they are reading this blog post and feel really guilty over this minor “hit and run”, just because it’s a new car doesn’t mean that a warranty covers this time of damage and I’ve had to fork out my hard-earned wages for damage caused by some complete idiot….

Hmmm I feel a bit better now that’s off my chest….

It’s that time of year again when Channel 4 decide to bombard with a complete and utter pile of … careful Karen might tell me of for swearing Yes it’s time for Celebrity Big Brother which begs the question:

WHY?

Plain and simply really, why do channel 4 bother with this complete and utter dribble, it’s bad enough having just suffered Help I’m a Washed Up Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here. It seems that everything is celebrity these days, don’t they get enough stardom and lime light from what they do anyway, oh hang most of them have a flagging career anyway

Yes, I know what fans of the show will say, “If you don’t like it don’t watch it!” ok that may be the case but then every time you turn on the TV in the morning it’s this celebrity did this, that celebrity did that, I DON’T CARE!!!!!!

Ok my rant is over …. Or is it?

But, there comes a time when we must say to Hollywood “NO!” and this is one of those times.

Shadow of the Colossus is a truly visual PlayStation 2 game, ok so maybe there is not too much to it, the idea is to ride your horse around the mythical land, find the different Colossi and kill them, which is no easy task as the creature are huge and I mean huge.

But honestly how can you turn this game into a film, there is one character killing the creatures, would you sit through a film for 90 mins. to 2 hours with a guy firing arrows at giants, climbing up them and then killing them?

Supposedly the script will make some major changes to make the film more action packed and interesting, but surely if this is done then it takes away the spirit of the games haunting feel with it’s melancholy music and peaceful landscapes.

I personally thought this was a wind up from one of my friends until they pointed me in the direction of The Hollywood Reporter’s Risky Biz Blog with info on the film. So what next a movie version of The Sims, or even Pacman (or have they done that already ) I mean it’s bad enough that Hollywood has ran out of ideas in making movies and has to re-imagine/re-make some of the classic movies, but to keep making video game movies, I suppose one good thing of this Shadow of the Colossus movie is, so far the name Uwe Boll hasn’t spung up

First of all the speeches, I mean come on! Kate Winslett spent three minutes gushing away and saying

“I’m so sorry Anne, Meryl, Kristin – oh God, who’s the other one… Angelina!”

Honestly aren’t they in the business to get these awards and every year the speeches just get longer and longer and longer and… well you get the point!

And then you get prats like Sacha Baron Cohen who was booed after these idiotic words:

“This recession is affecting everyone, even celebrities,” he told the star-studded audience. “Victoria Beckham hasn’t eaten for three weeks. Charlie Sheen has been forced to have sex without paying for it. It’s true.

“And even Madonna has had to get rid of one of her personal assistants. Our thoughts go out to you Guy Ritchie.”

I mean come on it’s not even funny and then there is Ricky Gervais, now I know I’m going to step on a few toes here by saying he’s not even funny (pause for screams of how dare you)

Ricky Gervais did raise a laugh from the audience, in my point of view it was a mercy laugh, for saying,

“I’m not even nominated, which detracts from the credibility of any awards ceremony.”

and referring to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, who vote for the awards, he said:

“That was a waste of a campaign.” and “That’s the last time I have sex with 300 middle-aged journalists. It was horrible.”

Is that funny, I don’t think so.

The award that I really think is deserved, and I know many that will agree and many that won’t, is Heath Ledger for the Posthumous winner of the Best Supporting Actor.

But I suppose at the end of the day, what do these awards prove, well to put it simply that celebrities are there to annoy us (specially Ricky Gervais) and entertain us, this is what the awards do while we are watching or reading about them, so a job well done

It’s been an awful day today, I got up this morning to a cold and icy day, it took me a good twenty five minutes to clear the car of ice and then I had to “skate” along the drive to open the gate!

What made it worse was that the local council really didn’t think this was going to happen, even though the rest of us did.

Our street was like an ice rink and the little country lane I have to drive up to get to the main back road to work was just as bad, surely it should of been gritted knowing people use this narrow road to get to work ect in the morning, so there I was doing a steady snail pace up the road to get to work, it must of took me at least an extra twenty minutes to work this morning, good job I started out early!

I’m just hoping that tomorrow isn’t the same as today, or I’m going in later!!!

OK here it is my Monday Moan, I know this will step on a few toes, but to be honest, I DON’T CARE!!!!!!!

Well I’m afraid it’s nearly that time again when descent, watchable telly goes right out the window and Ch4 is about to bring us Celebrity Big Brother.

Yes I know there are so many “fans” out there that spend all night watching the live feed on TV and then doing nothing but talk about it the next day in work to anyone and everyone, you know who you are!

So what is all the fuss!?

Personally I would prefer some good TV such as some interesting dramas or even the TV companies to stop axing the good programmes such as Eli Stone or Pushing Daisies.

I really don’t understand the “thrill” that people get from watching a collection of has been celebs making complete idiots out of themselves, I mean it bad enough with the standard Big Brother, but come on, has TV really come to this. Will celebrities stop at nothing, what next celebrity sitting on the toilet, oh hang on, isn’t that the same thing
