Imagine you are working out to your favorite EDM. You’re running on the treadmill, you’ve got your blood pumping and you’re in the perfect rhythm. Suddenly, the song on your iPod changes to a different track that completely ruins the mood. We’ve all been there, and there is nothing worse than trying to exercise to a beat that doesn’t match the pace of your workout. However, it can be hard to find songs that are always right on target.

Finding Your BPM

Before you can even come close to finding EDM music that matches your own beat, you need to know what that sweet spot is. The number of times your foot touches the treadmill when you run at a comfortable pace for one minute is your own personal beat-per-minute, or BPM. Determining your BPM is easy. Simply run at a comfortable pace for 15 minutes. During that time, count your footsteps over several one-minute intervals and record the results. Add them together and divide by the total number of intervals to calculate the average. The result is your workout BPM.

The Tangerine App

Now that you know your workout BPM, you need music that matches it. Fortunately, technology comes to our rescue. A new program, called Tangerine, is able to scan your iTunes library and calculate the BPM of each of your songs. Using this information, you can create the perfect workout playlist full of EDM that complements your own beat.

Choosing Songs

Depending on your exercising preferences, there are several ways to turn your EDM library into the perfect playlist for your workout routine. If your workout focuses on endurance, create a list with slower EDM at the beginning, songs that match your beat in the middle, and slower songs at the end. If you enjoy interval training, you may enjoy a playlist with alternating intervals of faster and slower EDM.

All EDM is connected to its own BPM. When you find the songs that match your own beat, you will enjoy a much more productive workout. If your workout beat is too slow, you may slow your own pace to match it, thus reducing your workout’s effectiveness. On the other hand, a beat that is too fast makes you feel pressured, anxious or just generally “off”. Using Tangerine and some simple calculations, you can create a playlist that fuels your ambition and maximizes your benefits.

From dish washing to dog walking, Danielle crutches on EDM to get through most of her daily tasks. Aside from building perfect playlists, Danielle also blogs for Sears and other brands she uses. She will take the soft hum of a bass over the sound of a rainstorm any day.

This year the Isle of Wight Festival is entertaining two of the biggest dinosaurs of MOR and Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. Tom Petty will be making his first appearance in the UK in over two decades while Pearl Jam’s only UK festival booking is at the festival. Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band will close the festival on the Sunday night. You can see a full line-up of bands here, just click on each badge to see each stage.

The Isle of Wight Festival is one of the world’s oldest regular rock festivals but that doesn’t mean that it’s attended and run by a gang of washed up rockers still trying to make out they’re as “groovy” as they were forty years ago. This year’s line up also includes the likes of Crystal Castles, Magnetic Man, Noah and the Whale, Jessie J, and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.

The festival encompasses the Summer Solstice and considering the bands that are confirmed to play already there won’t be many Midsummer’s parties to beat it! As well as the music there will be other entertainments and attractions. The Isle of Wight Festival has always been environmentally conscious, so, in addition to the award winning campaign to Give Bees A Chance there’s also a Love Your Tent initiative. Last year one in six festival goers left their tents behind rather than carrying them home. Along with this they also left 152 tonnes of waste, a full quarter of all that landfill was made up of tents and camping equipment. So, in order to combat that kind of wastefulness the festival organisers have come up with Love Your Tent Commandments:

1. You must Love Your Tent.
2. You must not buy cheap tents, but invest in one that will last for years to come.
3. You must never leave your tent anywhere for someone else to take apart and take to landfill (recycling facilities for all tent parts currently don’t exist)
4. You must RESPECT your tent and the area in which you pitch it.

5. You must spread the word and encourage others to Love Their Tent.
6. You must openly demonstrate your devotion to your tent and send evidence to iloveit@loveyourtent.com for a chance to win 2013 Isle of Wight Festival tickets.

7. You must love thy neighbour and not disturb them by playing bongos at 4am.

8. You must follow all additional on-site guidelines in order to keep the respect for others and the environment.
9. You must join our community www.facebook.com/LoveYourTent and keep up to date on news from Festival land as well as the chance to enter other exclusive competitions.
10. You must be happy campers and share the love.

As well as all the fun that you can normally expect from a festival the Isle of Wight also boasts its own beach and The Kinetic Playground to enjoy.

We’ve all been in the position where we’ve been taken in by a beautiful spot in the country, and want to have a weekend or a week break there – only to find it is hours away in the car. When this happens, you have to be ready to pick up the best albums in your house, load them onto your ipod and enjoy the journey.

But, what are the best albums to listen to? Are there certain picks that are better suited for travelling through the country? For example, The XX are more of a band to listen to in and around the city. Here we will have a look at a few to help you on your way when your en-route to one of the many Sykes Cottages around the United Kingdom.

Bruce Springsteen (Image via RottenTomatoes.com)

• Born To Run, Bruce Springsteen – Let’s face it, the song itself is enough reason to carry the whole album as you make your way through the country to the cottage that you will be enjoying. But, the full album is worth bringing along. Surprisingly, it only made number three in 1975, but it’s straight in the list. To be fair though, you could create your own Springsteen album to ensure that all the big songs from the years were involved – now, that would be priceless.

• Greatest Hits, Texas – Everybody has a memory of this being part of their life, and if you’re going through the country in the height of summer then this is the perfect album to go with your happy holidaying faces.

• Rumours, Fleetwood Mac – Going back to the Springsteen era, and this British-American rock band have to have a spot in the chars. With so many songs that hit the charts as singles, when they are brought together it is wondrous how good the band actually was – get your sing-a-long voice ready.

• Pet Sounds, The Beach Boys – You don’t have to be going to the beach to enjoy them but they are one of the finest bands to take with you to enjoy a car journey. Everyone knows how good they were and you can all dance in the car through the country as you enjoy the sounds of the Californian band.

• Lungs, Florence and the Machine – As we become a bit more modern, we move to this album that came out in July 2009. Getting to number one, there were so many singles in there that did the rounds – and are still going now. From “Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)” to the often remixed “You’ve Got The Love”, there is so much on there to enjoy.
Now that you have a big five to take on your trip, you’ll be even keener to find country cottages to rent

. In fact, you’ll probably want to find them even further away so that you can enjoy these albums even more! Happy driving.

Misheard lyrics, sometimes known as mondegreens are near homophones which confuse but can be amusing at the same time. The term ‘mondegreen’ was coined in an article by Sylvia Wright in an article published by Harpers in 1954 and comes from the fourth line of Percy’s Reliques that her mother used to recite to her. The stanza should say

“They hae slain the Earl O’ Moray, and Laid him on the green.”

Dropping Phat Beats Old School

However, Wright thought both the earl and a Lady Mondegreen had both been murdered.

The best thing about mondegreens is that they are so often better than the original lyric or line. When I was a child I thought Michael Jackson went to the post office to buy himself a fizzy drink.

“Get down to the post office, don’t drop ‘til you get a pop!” whereas, rather incredibly, the real lyric is “keep on with the force don’t stop, don’t stop ‘til you get enough.”

Because we learn language not only by listening but contextualising and (usually) looking at the mouth of our interlocutor pop songs and poetry lend themselves very well to misunderstanding. Pop songs have little or no context and poetry tends to use language strangely in order to make use of rhyme, metre and rhythm.

There are of course anti-mondegreens, Steve Miller, in his song The Joker invented ‘pompatus’ because he couldn’t think of anything else that would fit, creating the line “Some people call me Maurice, ‘cos I speak of the pompatus of love.”

Fallout Boy’s This Ain’t A Scene, It’s An Arms Race, a song I could not stand, even with the hilarious mondegreen “Lucy Lucy is a God damned arse face” while the Red Hot Chilli Pepper’s By The Way is almost unintelligible as Anthony Kiedis sings about “card shop” “corn job” and the wonderful sequence “hoo ha kiss you little monkey” and “daddy’s the girl who used to sing you songs beneath the monkey, over flowed.”

Oasis sang about their favourite British supermarket in Wonderwall with “Maybe, you’re gonna be the one at Sainsbury’s” while Queen sang about the demonic possession of furniture with “Beelzebub has a devil set a sideboard. Me, for me.”

While rock seems to be a genre aflood with unintelligible lyrics, there are others where clarity seems to be at a premium. R&B, particularly Destiny’s Child’s Independent Woman is almost two songs at the same time as Beyonce sings to us of 70’s British TV character Alf Garnet, “ Shoes on my feet, Alf Garnet, clothes I’m wearing, Alf Garnet, cop I’m driving, Alf Garnet, I depend on meat!”

However, the best mondegreens come from songs in different languages. Because you try to find sense in sounds that you simply don’t understand hilarious combinations begin to develop. This being so, I leave you with The Indian Nipple Song!

Ok I promise that this is going to be the last “Top List” post that I do for updates from last year, but as a lot of you who read Blazing Minds also know me for my love of music, I thought I would do a musical based “Top List” post using my personally scrobbles via Last.fm so this is my Top Artists, Albums And Track Scrobbles list.

Ever since I got my iPod Classic a couple of years ago, my music collection has been growing and though it’s not as big as some peoples music lists, so far I have around 6,320 tracks on my iPod, it is great for me and I get to add some amazinging unsigned artists to it quite frequently and have even had the honour of working with a few on my Remergence project.

So as you can expect I do have a tendency to play a lot of music on my iPod and when it is plugged in to iTunes it syncs up with last.fm and records what I have been listening to, though sometimes last.fm has a bit of a fit and doesn’t “scrobble” the tracks, but besides from that it’s all automatically done for me

Top Artists And Track Scrobbles Of 2011

Now I’ve always been a fan of the TV show Monkey Dust that used to be on BBC Three some years ago with it’s quirky characters and amazing music, this is the show that introduced me to the wonderful musical talents of Goldfrapp and Boards of Canada!

So since having a trusty iPod I’ve been collecting the tracks that have been on the several series that the show ran over and when I originally typed this post I had 22 tracks, now at my most recent count I have 56 tracks that were used over the three series on Monkey Dust, yes that many!

Those days of going to the cinema to just see a film and nothing else have really fallen by the wayside, these days we get operas, sports events, concerts and much more.

And today I found out that my local haunt, Rhyl Apollo Cinema, is having a special “for one night only” event and beamed direct from Broadway to the Sony 4K Digital cinema screens, now how cool is that!

Memphis - Direct from Broadway for ONE NIGHT ONLY!

The foot-tapping, Tony Award-winning Musical – direct from Broadway for the very first time! In 1950s Memphis, a young white man named Huey (Chad Kimball) visits the underground Beale Street Club to soak up the sounds of rhythm ‘n’ blues.

He explains to the curious owner, Delray (J Bernard Calloway), that he has developed a real passion for the music. But Huey’s enthusiasm for playing ‘race’ records nearly ends his career as a DJ on a white radio station.

At the same time, he falls for Delray’s beautiful sister Felicia (Montego Glover) and promises to help publicise her singing talents. But achieving this in the segregated South is going to be a challenge.

The infectious songs are by David Bryan – Bon Jovi’s Grammy Award winning keyboard player

Brought to cinemas by Supervision Media and Broadway Worldwide. The production of MEMPHIS was presented in movie theatres throughout the US and Canada last month, to enormously positive critical and viewer response.

As the misheard song states, ‘Waking Up Is Hard To Do’, so we have put together the top 10 songs that are going to help you get out of bed. Some of these songs are loud, others are more fun, but all relate to getting your butt out of bed.

Also, you should recognize that if you need to just wake up without having a song related to mornings, take any track off of a death metal album, and set your volume to max. With this list, we’re going for a little bit more style than just sheer terror!

So in no particular order, here are the ten greatest wake-up songs:

10 – Rage Against The Machine – Wake Up – 6:05
It is always better to start a day with a bang. Rage Against The Machine’s call to arms for people to listen to what is going on beneath what the media tells you is the perfect alarm bell. The growling call to ‘Wake up!’ at the end of the song is better than a hot cup of coffee or cold water on the face.

9 – Extreme – Rise ‘n Shine – 6:24
Now that you have been shocked out of your evening’s torpor with Rage, we move onto something a little more relaxed. From the underappreciated classic ‘III Sides Of Every Story’ comes ‘Rise ‘n Shine’ which is actually part of a three song round. All of the interesting musical history of the song aside, this is an ideal song to start up your day with a gorgeous full ensemble of strings and woodwinds mixed with Nuno Bettencourt’s rock guitar.

8 – Maroon Five – Wake Up Call – 3:40
Moving from the rock into something a little more soulful and funky, Maroon Five gives us a little ditty about the singer finding his girl in bed with another man. It may not be your first choice for what you hear when you are trying to shake the dreams, but it is most definitely going to have your toes tapping, which might be all you need to not fall back asleep.

7 – The Beatles – Dear Prudence – 3:59
‘Here Comes The Sun’ or ‘A Day In The Life’ were both in contention, but I decided that one Beatles song is enough for this list. Dear Prudence is the perfect inspirational way to wake up and feel that there is a whole world out there for you to enjoy. With a beat that grows in intensity as you start to focus your eyes, this is arguably one of the most inspirational songs the Fab Four ever did.

6 – Wham! – Wake Me Up (Before You Go Go) – 3:51
There is something to be said about being annoyed into awakening. Paying attention to the song is guaranteed to get it deeply stuck into your head for the rest of the day. Then again, if this is your favorite period of music, then you might think this is an ideal choice. So whether this song is going to make you run out of your room with your fingers plugged in your ears, or dancing with your ‘Choose Life’ shirt, you are awake. Congratulations.

5 – The Proclaimers – I Will Walk (500 Miles) – 3:50
From the eighties earworms to the nineties, this song is another one of those classic songs that crawls into your head and won’t leave. The only difference between this and Wham! is that if you start singing the chorus aloud, five other people will immediately join in.

4 – Bob Marley and The Wailers – Wake Up and Live – 5:20
There has been a lot of rock and pop on this list, but not mentioning Bob Marley’s call out for people to rise up would be a crime against music. Reggae is surprisingly fantastic wake up music, with its strong brass and percussion, you just want to get up and move to the rhythm while you get your day started.

3 – Alabama 3 – Woke Up This Morning – 4:06
At first you might look at this title and have no idea what it is, but unless you have lived under a rock for the last decade, you have heard this song. It is the opening credits to the hit show ‘The Sopranos’. Featuring that deep bass voice, and the mix of blues, techno, and rock, this song has a lot going on to keep you occupied while you are trying to find the outside of your eyelids.

2 – System Of A Down – Chop Suey – 3:55
A metal anthem in a similar style to the Beatles ‘Day In The Life’, not only does this song feature amazingly strong vocals yelling at you to ‘Wake up, grab your brush and put on a little make up’ – it is loud, heavy, and if at the end of this song you aren’t out of bed, you are legally dead in three states.

1 – Sonny & Cher – I Got You Babe – 2:50
This song made the list, not because of its substance, but because of its place in the history of waking up. A little movie called ‘Groundhog Day’ featured Bill Murray waking up to this song every morning for, what we can assume, years. Every time you heard this song it was a sign that Bill was waking up for another fantastic morning in Gobbler’s Knob.

This was a guest post by John for Russell Hobbs – browse our range of coffee machines if you need a little something extra to wake you up in the morning!

Shocking news today as police confirm that singer Amy Winehouse was found dead in her Camden home in London at the young age of 27.

UPDATE

Early Monday morning Amy Winehouse’s father Mitch visited her home and thanked her fans for their tributes saying ”I can’t tell you what this means to us. It really is making this a lot easier.” He also added that the loss of his daughter has left him “Speechless”

He also told fans that had congregated in Camden Square “Amy was about one thing and that was love. Her whole life was devoted to her family and her friends and to you guys as well,”

Fans have been leaving tributes outside her house along with cigarettes and vodka bottles!

A post-mortem examination into Amy Winehouse’s death will take place later, authorities have confirmed.

This music had helped the no number of different people, from basketball playing werewolves to heavyweight boxers, from spoilt teen dancers to drug trafficking overlords. A montage is for everyone. Here are some of the best montage videos to come out of the 80’s;

Gonna Fly Now – Bill Conti

Who can forget the Rocky training montage scenes throughout the spectacular career of Rocky Balboa, the videos still bring a tear of emotional ‘you can do anything’ inspiration. The Rocky movies will never be remembered for their spectacular acting or superior scripting, but no one can dispute the heart of the movie.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Scarface (Push it to the Limit) – Paul Engemann

Whilst the movie doesn’t have the most positivity and personal motivation reinforcing attributes such as working hard, pushing yourself and becoming all you can be, the song by Paul Engemann sums up exactly what the 80’s montage music was about.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Hungry Eyes – Eric Carmen

A montage showing Patrick Swayze teaching his new and infatuated dance partner the moves for an upcoming dance-off, whilst this film may not be to everyone’s taste this montage shows Jennifer Grey (known as ‘Baby’), learning to dance whilst frame by frame falling that little bit more in love with her mentor to the melody of Eric Carmen’s keyboard piano.

Click here to view the embedded video.

You’re the Best – Joe Esposito

Another film that sums up nicely how strength through adversity can make you feel unbeatable, and remember, cheating is never the right thing to do. As an 80’s child you will remember the crane kick fondly, but this song is one that will motivate people through tough times for years to come.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Win in The End – Mark Safan

The general requirements for a movie montage are sports, dancing or money making, this tune from Mark Safan might seem out of place in a film about a basketball playing werewolf teenager but when a young Micheal J Fox realises that he can help his team win by encouraging team work and fair play.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Eye of the Tiger – Survivor

Back to the classic Rocky training montage, perfectly accompanied this time by Survivor and their mega hit ‘Eye of the Tiger’, the training scene comes from Rocky IV in a Cold War, Man versus Machine battle that only Rocky stands a chance of prevailing.

Click here to view the embedded video.

As the innocent sincerity of the 80’s montage has faded into a hazy dream of better times, to be mocked by ironic attempts by films such as Team America, we forget how inspirational we felt during the first time we watched these starlets conquer adversity and reach their goal, only to try and find the encouragement to relate these to our own lives.

The 80’s montage is now seen as a mockery, something to be laughed at, but we all feel the same rush of adrenalin and emotion when Rocky reaches the top of the steps Philadelphia Museum of Arts. We shouldn’t forget the magic and inspiration of the 80’s montage.

What’s this another music review, yes indeed folks they are coming in now aren’t they, you remember the other day I reviewed an album by Pink Floyd Floydhead which was Pink Floyd with an electronica twist, so this week I’m brining you an electronica EP that was brought to my attention whilst reading my Twitter timeline and was mentioned by my good friend @Dave_Radcliffe the 7 track EP in question is Mono by S13.

So I shot by the S13 website to check out the album and boy oh boy, it’s just the kind of music I love, so after paying the £1.50 for the download, yes I know that’s so cheap, I added it to my iTunes and started playing it through my sound system. It sounded even better!

Crystal clear tracks, excellent electronica, I really can’t fault this album, right from the very start the tracks just grabbed me with something that I hadn’t felt since those early days when I first heard the likes of Orbital.

But I do have to point out that this album is not going to be everyone’s taste, it is a powerful electronica album with overtones of acid, drum n bass, idm and jazz, I kid you not

This is an album that is going to appeal to those like myself that are not closed to the idea that there are many genres of music out there in the world and that we are well in to the 21st century and that music has grown and developed in to something more.

So if you are looking for something different and something will open you mind to the world of IDM, electronica and drum n bass, then you really should check out Mono by S13

If you’re like me when it comes to music, then there are usually that many albums that you want to get your hands on that on the odd occasion, you let one slip by, you’ve simply not got enough cash to get it or, as this one did with me, you just completely forgot about it.

So the other day, while going through my personal wish list of albums that I wanted to get my hands on, I came across The Floydian Propulsion Project by Pink Floyd Floydhead, an album which had been overlooked and quite frankly it shouldn’t have been.

I’m a big fan of Pink Floyd and have nearly every album, except the compilation ones, so this album, though not by Pink Floyd, was one that I was really looking forward to getting hold of.

The album is 80 minutes, 20 tracks, of Pink Floyd tracks remixed and revamped in to what can only be described as pure genius, you just can’t imagine how amazing this album sounds without hearing it, but the electronic twists and turns on this album are outstanding.

I can’t really pick out one particular favourite from the 20 tracks as they are all as good as each other, but, I can say that one that stands out the most to me is “Drooling and Raving” which has so many of my favourite sounds from Pink Floyd in it, including sections from the album “Meddle” and parts from the album “Piper At The Gates Of Dawn” and “Dark Side Of The Moon“, just brilliant.

This is an album that the majority of Pink Floyd fans will enjoy, breathing life back in to the brilliant sounds that we’ve grown up with over the years and one for me that is going to get played the hell out of.

So sit back and enjoy The Floydian Propulsion Project by Pink Floyd Floydhead.

Marketing to your fans is essential for your music business and your success totally depends on when and how you do it. How can you send out a newsletter with the upcoming tour dates, a blog post or a new video to create maximum buzz? This part should go smoothly if you are doing a good job at constantly updating your fans with the latest things going on in your band.

First, Get To Know Your Fans

Make it your no. 1 priority to find out who are the ones that come to your shows, buy your CDs, download your music and visit your website. Those people are your most valuable asset outside of your songs.

Start observing your fans’ lifestyles which will greatly help you make money with your music. This is because when you discover who they are, your fans’ habits will inspire you to find new ways to reach them. To help you do that, here are some questions to ask yourself about your fans:

- How old are they?

- What gender is dominant?

- Do they come from one specific ethnic group or is there a mix?

- Do they drive to work, or take public transportation, ride bikes, etc?

- Are they religious people?

- Where do they shop for clothes?

- What kind of hobbies/interests do they have?

- What other music do they listen to?

- When they travel and how do they do that?

- Do they do any volunteer work?

- What websites do they visit regularly?

When To Create Buzz

It comes naturally that you’d want to buzz your fans at the best hours, so your message can have maximum impact. There are times when your message will not be welcomed, such as mornings, and really late at night. The best time to hit your fans with your message is around 4pm in the afternoon, because they are usually winding down for the day. So sending out a tweet or Facebook post at this time will have the greatest impact and reach their minds.

How Soon Should You Announce Your Shows?

If you want to inform your fans about an upcoming show, you should do that a week before the event, then send reminders 2 days before, the day before and on the big day. People are busy and tend to forget things. So if you buzz them at regular intervals it will give them plenty of time to make plans and come see you play.

Reach Your Fans After The Show

It’s also a good time to buzz them after the show, to get the pulse and check their feedback and what they have to say about the performance. This will help your band adjust anything that might’ve went wrong and become better at what you do.

Remember, turn every show or public appearance into a good opportunity to promote your band, increase the fan base that will increase sales of your music and products just enough to help you break free.
