A collection of reviews of music, albums, singles etc..

So a couple of weeks back I was listening to my favourite local station @PointFMRhyl and heard and interview with Dave Elwyn (@DaveElwyn) and Craig K (@OfficialCraigK) which introduced me to Dave’s music and that he was giving away a copy of his album, Raw Blues, in a little competition on the station, so how could I not get my entry in, in a hope of winning his album.

Hoorah! I’ve Won A Competition

I do have to admit that I do enter a few competitions (I still have hope in winning all the tasty cakes on the PointFM Cake Break) and was over the moon when I was announced as the winner of Dave’s album, so now all I had to do was pick up the CD, so as I was off out to review a film that night I decided to pop down to PointFM and pick the CD up from John Daly (one of the DJs on the station).

Enough Of The Banter, What About The Album Review!

Rooftop Runners are from Berlin, Germany.  They’re two guys fusing together alternative and electronic. They’re bringing amazing sounds to my speakers and their EP We Are Here, to be released April 3rd, is one not to miss.
For more information, check out their website: http://www.rooftoprunners.com/

Streets really made me think, all the different instruments would sound incredibly weak if they weren’t together, but they are so it’s all quite powerful, the vocals are clearly what we’re meant to be listening to, and the lyrics aren’t too bad either. Musically, there’s no variation between a verse and a chorus. I think that these guys are going for a sound that isn’t your typical structured pop song.

Having just won an award for ‘Best Indie Rock Artist’ from the Artists in Music Awards 2012, I’m really excited to have been sent the EP for Monks of Mellonwah! “Neurogenesis” will be released May 24, 2012. And for more information on getting the EP, check out their website.

We start of this EP with Neurogenesis, a very old Red Hot Chilli Peppers sounding style. This song is has a really awesome mix of bass and drums, they really feel like they’re moving the whole song and the vocalist does the track justice. I’m loving the use of harmonics and I don’t feel like they’re used enough in music today. This song is fantastic, and so far so is the band. I can really feel these guys would have anybody off their seat at a concert.

Neverending Spirit is a tone down and is one of them songs that has the catchy lyrics that stick in your head all day. Monks of Mellonwah have really got their harmonies perfect, and the production of these tracks is fantastic. Brilliant, fantastic, easy listening.

Kyoto is any rock fans dream, this song has the crazy riffs, strong basslines, fast drums, and sing-along lyrics.  An absolutely amazing song, my favourite for sure.

Monks of Mellonwah are going to be big.

The last song from this EP is You Shine. An eerie, atmospheric beginning to what I’m sure is going to be a big ending. A catchy chant and tight drums, and I’m left wanting more. I can’t wait to hear more of these guys, and hopefully we’ll be hearing more of them soon.

The Greek Composer released his fourth album in November 2011. With the title ‘Ultimate Love.’
So I’ll have a listen and see if I ultimately love it. If you would like to hear the album yourself, it’s free to download from his website.

Strong is a very melodic and well-produced song. The melody makes up for there not being any vocals. Yet I still can’t help but feel like I’ve heard this tune somewhere before. I like that Gouzonis has used very ‘thin’ drums. The usual with electronic music producers is to whack the bass up and drown everything else out.

When You Touch Me starts of with a nice atmospheric sound and a lovely flute melody. A relaxing, beautiful piece of electronica but would have preferred a bit of variation on the melody.

Like The Sun would be the perfect song for the end of a sad movie, leading into the credits. The high pitch synths and arpeggiated melody are enough for background music but I probably wouldn’t find myself turning this song on specifically.

Being given the chance to review something new by an artist I haven’t heard of before is an honour for me here on Blazing Minds and recently I’ve had the chance to check out Hectic Zeniths with the forthcoming album of the same name.

So after receiving my preview copy of the album I got on to playing it for a few days so that I could give a good listen and decide my thoughts on it and whether I liked it or not, but you’ll have to read on if you want to know my thoughts on this new album from Hectic Zeniths ;)

It’s certainly been a long wait for the latest album from the Tech wizard Thomas Dolby, back in the 80′s we were delighted with the sounds of “She Blinded Me With Science” and “One Of Our Submarines” from “The Golden Age Of Wireless“.

Over the years Thomas Dolby’s music has grown and those gadget sounding tracks slowly disappeared, the album “Aliens Ate My Buick” was the turning point in his style of music for me and though I still enjoyed his work.

A Map of the Floating City

A Map Of The Floating CityThe album has those similar sounds and tones of the Atronauts & Heretics, but more stylish and still has those wonderful Thomas Dolby vocals anda style that only he could produce. It’s a soothing album and catchy all at the same time, with guests such as Eddie Reader, Mark Knopfler and Imogen Heap.

Being a fan of Thomas Dolby is was’t hard for me to pick up on the brilliance of this album and each track in this Deluxe Version is a joy to listen to and at time somewhat moving, such as the track Simone a track which took years to write and took a moment in his life to complete the track.

But with this piece of fiction, it took a slice of real life to bring me to a place where I could complete the song. Someone I’m close to told me they have gender dysphoria.

Which I find quite a moving, but wonderful track to listen to as is the double album which includes a disc full of instrumental version of the tracks, amazing and all nicely mixed with brilliant quality from start to finish.

If I was asked to pick out one particular track from the album and say it’s my favourite, then I would have to say that I can’t, for me the whole album is a joy to listen to and it’s so great to have @ThomasDolby back producing great music, here’s hoping that he decides to bring us some more musical masterpieces soon!

Many moons ago, when I originally set up the Inde Net Label Atom Sounds, I did several reviews of the artists on the label, so I thought I would bring you a review that I posted up of the album See The Light by Bob Evans.

Those needing some culture will certainly find it on Bob’s album “See the Light”, with great guitar work and soothing beats to some nice rock/country sounding tracks.

Now I will openly admit that upon first hearing the title track “See the Light” on the Atom Sounds CD, I thought to myself, here is an artist that has a god given talent and that talent is Bob’s vocals tied into some amazing guitar work.

“See the Light” consists of twelve tracks and each track on the album has that Bob Evans feel, but at the same time each track is different from the next, a change these days. The CD opens with the immensely toe tapping title track “See the Light” and from that point on it just gets better.
