So there I was the other day preparing a new blog post when something rather bizarre happens, all my blogs categories and tags disappeared from WordPress!

What Was Happening And Why Was This Happening?

After looking around several sites and trying to find out the reason this had happened I really couldn’t find any help anywhere, with some places saying it was the fault of a plugin, some saying it was WordPress causing the issue and some saying that it was the fault of PHPMyAdmin!

So I wasn’t really getting anywhere with a solution to the issue that had now made all my posts listed under ”uncategorized” and no tags being listed anywhere, which in turn also caused a of category and tag pages disappear from the blog as well.

Upon further investigation and testing, I also found that I couldn’t even add new categories or tags to the blog. So this led me to believe that it’s not an issue with the WordPress installation, but it was actually a problem with the database used by WordPress.

Solving The Issue Of Disappearing Categories And Tags In WordPress

Now the option to take was to look at the database that was being used for the blog and see if there was any issues with it that could be causing the problem.

So I logged in to my cPanel and selected “MySQL Databases” then clicked “Check DB” to check the database for any issues that could be causing the missing categories and Tags.

BINGO!

There it was, an issue with the one of the database entries that was used for categories and tags, so I returned to the “MySQL databases” page and selected “Repair DB” and crossed my fingers that this would actually work and repair the database and at least let me re-add the categories and tags.

Yes indeed, this repaired the issue and now all section of the database were listed as “ok”, so I went in to my WordPress admin with the thoughts of a long night entering the lost categories and tags.

Never fear they had all returned on their own, all listed back to the posts they were linked to. What a relief!

The Moral Of This Post!

Don’t panic if you have this issue coming your way and you have access to your cPanel, then this is a way of fixing the issue without having to re-install WordPress, this is the way I repaired the problem, but, if it happens to you and this doesn’t work, then contact your hosting provider and they may be able to repair your database for you if you don’t have access to cPanel.

A Personal Testimony From Me

I’ve been using the original CommentLuv plugin since I started Blazing Minds and it’s always proved an essential part of my blogging, not only for myself, but for those visiting my blog, having the option to give something back to those that take the time to comment, is a way of saying thank you for commenting.

Now with the CommentLuv Premium plugin, I can now give more options to those commenting, such as letting them leave their Twitter name, giving their comments a bit of DoFollow Linky Luv.

I’ve now also got a handy system for trackback spam, all built in to the CommentLuv Premium plugin, plus, I have an option to give social network incentives, such as tweeting a post will allow readers to get a selection of more posts from their blog or to give them a DoFollow or even both.

Now this is something that I’ve seen a time or to and even my Guest Bloggers here on Blazing Minds have had the problem with the dreaded WordPress white screen of death when they have tried to get on to the dashboard to add a guest post.

But is there a way to solve the problem?

The simple answer to that is YES!

There can be many things that cause this to happen, it could be plugins needing an update after you have upgraded to the latest version of WordPress.

It can even be a simple matter of memory on your server and 9 times out of 10 this is the main cause of the problem.

Most of the time a user will either get the dread WordPress white screen of death or they will get the dashboard appear with an error showing:

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 2323020 bytes) in /wp-includes/class-simplepie.php

But don’t worry there is away around this and it’s really easy to do.

How to fix the memory problem with WordPress

You will need to edit the wp-config.php file in your WordPress installation, so load it in to a text editor.

The first line should be <?php after this line add
define(‘WP_MEMORY_LIMIT’, ’64M’);
This will give your WordPress installation a little more head room than its default setting, so you are doubling the amount.

Save the updated wp-config.php back to your server and hey presto, your guest bloggers should be back to posting.

This also goes the same if you yourself are having problems with your own Admin Dashboard on WordPress.

What could be causing the problem in the first place?

Usually, this is all caused by memory hungry plugins and those that may need updating to be less hungry with your installation, one which I found to be a terrible culprit of this was Capability Manager a plugin which a few WordPress users use when they would like to give a little friendly usage to their guest poster.

I personally found that after disabling this plugin, everything worked and after adding the code above and then re-enabling the plugin, everything seemed fine again.

But, then another problem arose, I could log in, I could even login with another “dummy” user account but sadly @DrRus couldn’t, so after plenty of deliberation and playing around with plugins etc, I narrowed the offending plugin, Lightbox 2, yes it looks nice but it was even causing a Java script error on IE8 and occasionally on FireFox as well. Suffice to say this was removed!!

So if you are having these problems with your WordPress installation, then don’t just sit there in silence, give any of the above a try, and hopefully it will work for you as well

But remember, check your plugins first as one of these, specially ones that have not been updated for use with the latest version of WordPress could be causing annoying problems.

Note: A Big special thanks to @DrRus for helping me out with logging in on the other side of the world on different browsers and checking if he could log in and working with me to solve the issues and to @BodynSoil for checking on her side if she had problems, many thanks to you both

One of the things that can really get on your nerves when your blog gets more and more popular is the incessant amount of spam that keeps landing in your WordPress comments.

Ok so you may have Akismet running in your list of [intlink id="tips-bloggers-commentators" type="post"]Wordpress Plugins[/intlink], but to be honest it’s just not good enough and as mentioned by Gail at @GrowMap, Akismet can be a culprit of the dreaded white page of death on WordPress. So how about adding something in your WordPress Plugins that can really help.

Now thanks to Andy Bailey from CommentLuv there is a brilliant WordPress Plugin that can combat the dreaded Spam.

The GrowMap Anti-SpamBot Plugin is such a simple but very effective deterrent to the pesky bot spam that you get with a WordPress blog.

Why Use the GrowMap Anti-Spambot Plugin?

No false positives – your favorite commentators and new readers WILL be able to easily comment in your blog.

Blocks spam that Akismet was letting through. We are getting ZERO bot spam. Only those commenting manually who check the “I am not a spammer box” can leave comments.

Easier for commentators than using a Captcha or math plugin – never a “wrong” answer that isn’t wrong or a problem with cookies!

Why Not Just Use Akismet?

Large numbers of bloggers and regular commentators who never spam have been flagged by Akismet as spammers.

Any commentator who has been flagged as a spammer is treated rudely by your blog. They never see the message your comment is being moderated so they have no way of knowing what happened to their comment.

If you have a particular box checked in the Akismet configuration, comments left for real people who have been flagged incorrectly as commentators in posts more than 30 days old are immediately deleted and they see a blank white page. See how to turn off Akismet Comment deletion.

Read the many other posts and hundreds of comments related to problems with Akismet.

I’ve only recently started using the plugin and my SPAM has been reduced dramatically, so in my point of view it’s working like a dream, but don’t just take my word for it, check it out for yourself. Download the Growmap Anti-Spambot plugin on WordPress or via your Admin section under WordpPress Plugins in your WordPress installation

Earlier today, I took my blog offline while I experimented with the new Tweet button from Twitter and though it does look nice, I still prefer Topsy!

Saying that though I did have some fun with updating the code that is used to creat the new button from Twitter, yes I know my coding skills are nothing to boast about but if they work, that’s fine by me

Anyhow this is the code that I grabbed from the Twitter Goodies page for adding the Twitter Button on my blog:

<a href=”http://twitter.com/share” data-count=”horizontal” data-via=”BlazingMinds” data-related=”RemBeatZ:For some awesome music”>Tweet</a><script type=”text/javascript” src=”http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”></script>

This will place a Tweet Button like this on my blog. After adding the code I noticed that I had a few problems when the Tweet Button was on the main page of the blog, as it would only tweet the home url and not the posts url. So after plenty of playing around I updated it to.

<a href=”http://twitter.com/share” data-count=”horizontal” data-url=”<?php the_permalink(); ?>” data-text=”<?php the_title(); ?>” data-via=”BlazingMinds” data-related=”RemBeatZ:For some awesome music”>Tweet</a><script type=”text/javascript” src=”http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”></script>

Now that seemed to have done the trick, what next?

My next idea was to use the post author in the Tweet Button for the related option, which seemed a bit daunting at first, but then I remembered that I had the coding already which was available in the Author box on the bottom of the blog posts, so the finished code ended up looking like this.

<a href=”http://twitter.com/share” data-count=”horizontal” data-url=”<?php the_permalink(); ?>” data-text=”<?php the_title(); ?>” data-via=”BlazingMinds” data-related=”<?php the_author_meta( ‘twitter’ ); ?>:Author of the post”>Tweet</a><script type=”text/javascript” src=”http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”></script>

Replacing the information in the data-related variable with php the_author_meta( ‘twitter’ ); ?>:Author of the post now pulls in the information from the authors bio, where I had added an extra field for the authors twitter name, so now when the Tweet Button is used once the tweet has been posted it will now recommend the author of the post.

So why haven’t I implemented the new button on Blazing Minds?

Well to put it in simple terms, I don’t like it, it’s good to play around with, but as I said earlier I do prefer Topsy, I noticed that the counts were different between the two Tweet Buttons, with Topsy giving a more correct amount of tweets that the Twitter button, also Topsy has that great little extra of adding a “Top” section to the Tweet Button showing how popular your tweet is with influential tweeters

Now before anyone starts commenting and saying, this isn’t working or that isn’t working, don’t! As I mentioned earlier I’m NOT a coder, never having been I was just simply experimenting with the options of the new Twitter Button, so please don’t come asking me if it doesn’t work on your site!

I started blogging a little over a year ago and those of you who have been following me, you’ll be pleased to learn that I graduated from free hosted blogs on WordPress.com and Blogger to a full- fledged blog on self-hosted WordPress and my own domain. My new blog Basic Blog Tips was officially launched a few weeks ago and I’ve been adding new posts regularly in addition to importing a few gems from the archive of Ms. Ileane Speaks and 2 BuddyPress blogs at the Blogging Wire.

During my stint at Blogging Wire I was able to dabble with plugins to some degree, but it was a major struggle to get themes and blogs working together as one cohesive unit on BuddyPress. I must admit, I continue to fuss with coordinating plugins, themes and widgets even with WordPress 3.0.1 code name Thelonious! I’m sure some of you experienced headaches when themes and plugins collide on your WordPress blogs too. Here’s my wish list for true Theme/Plugin/Thelonious harmony.

Built in Social widgets – nice looking, bold social icons in a sidebar widget that includes Google Buzz and Blip.fm

H1 tags that are smaller than the font for the post title – is it just me or do people always mistake your H1 tag for your post title?

Custom header area – many themes have this feature and rightfully so

Subscribe to Comments – It took almost 2 full weeks before I noticed I need to download a plugin for this (honestly I think this should be part of the core in Thelonious).

Comment counts – comment counts should follow the authors name and date! I’m using the Digg Digg plugin as a temporary solution

Webmaster Authentication code fields for every search engine – there’s plenty of plugins to help manage SEO for WordPress in fact there’s WAY TOO MANY! It’s going to take me another 6 months just to pick the one I like.

Google Analytics insertion field – DOH! What blog owner doesn’t want to play around in GA!

Favicon insert option – this is another no-brainer. Besides Blue Host doesn’t have the cutest little favicon so it’s gotta go!

Multiple Sidebar options – sometimes one sidebar is not enough; this is another feature that most themes probably include already.

Free – yes I said it! I want all of this is a free theme.

It’s very likely that I’ll never find all the features from my wish list in a free theme but maybe this post will inspire one talented theme developer to start working on one. Plugins and toolbars are great but we all know how they can slow down page load times especially if you have an abundance of them.

Now that you’ve seen my wish list, what’s on yours?

Yesterday, was my tinkering day and I decided to update the way the authors posts are displayed when you click on the author’s name in the blog posts.

So after creating a new author.php file and taking the information for the layout for the theme I am using and adding it to the new author file, I decided that it would look even better if I utilised the “author box” that is at the bottom of all the posts here on my blog, just thought it would look even better.

So after adding that piece of code, I added the section for the articles that an author has written, with the information such as date posted, comments received etc. Giving the author page something that little bit more.

Over time I may add snippets from the blog posts to the lists of articles in the author pages, but for now, I think they look a lot better than the default author archives that I originally had.

Check out the my new look author page and let me know what you think.

Got the message in my WordPress dashboard today that WordPress 3 was available to upgrade to, “Awesome” I thought, so I clicked the upgrade button and got ready to use the new version of WordPress….

But a problem arose while trying to upgrade and I kept getting the error:

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 2516315 bytes) in /home/mydomain/public_html/blog/wp-includes/http.php on line 1363

OMG! So now it would be a case of doing a manual upgrade, which I hate doing as it seems to be such a cumbersome method, so after checking with a friend, who’s in the know with these sort of things they recommended me doing the following to make this work.

Open up the file wp-settings.php which is in the main directory of your WordPress installation

Find the line that reads define(‘WP_MEMORY_LIMIT’, ’32M’);

Change it to define(‘WP_MEMORY_LIMIT’, ’64M’);

Then start the upgrade process again.

Hopefully everything should have updated for you.

The problem is memory limit and by doing the above you give your PHP a little more memory to play around with and therefore giving WordPress that extra elbow room it needs to update correctly.

Please note, I’m not a PHP expert, so please BACK UP you WordPress installation before any upgrade that you make.

The mighty CommentLuv plugin has now been updated to version 2.80 and it seems faster than the previous versions and also has some nice new features included in the latest incarnation.

Which I will list for you in a moment, but first let me mention the nice surprise I had from Andy from CommentLuv via Twitter, I was reading in my Twitter time line that the new version was listed in the WordPress Plugins Directory, which I have to admit I don’t visit that often, I use the search from within WordPress for updates etc. But, after receiving this tweet from Andy, I had to check it out!

@BlazingMinds have you seen the new screenshots page for commentluv 2.80? http://bit.ly/bGUe44
June 5, 2010 8:40 am via TweetDeckReplyRetweetFavorite

@CommentLuv
Andy Bailey

The other day while reading through my RSS feeds on Feedly I came across a post at Potpolitics titled ”What is the best toolbar for your blog?”, now most of you that visit my blog will now that I have used the Wibiya Toolbar and though it is quite good and fairly fast to load, after reading John’s post I decided to give the Skysa Toolbar a shot and boy am I glad I did.

Not only is it a tad faster than the previous toolbar that was installed on Blazing Minds, but it allows you to make a little money back on it, yes you read that right, each time someone follows the link here on my blog and installed the toolbar I get $1 and then I think , if I’m right, my good friend John over at Potpolitics gets $0.25, anyway here’s a breakdown of the tier system etc that Skysa use.

Affiliate Link Clicks	37
Signups	0
Activated Bars	0 X $1.00 = $0.00

Tier 2 Activated	0 X $0.25 = $0.00
Your Credit Balance	$0.00

Having a toolbar on your blog can improve the bounce rate on your blog as people stay a little longer to click on the option on your toolbar, such as adding ReTweet, Digg, FaceBook and share buttons will allows your readers to click on these to share your site around the internet, also having an announcement box on your toolbar will bring special updates etc to your readers when they visit your blog or website.

So there you have it, if you want a useful toolbar for your blog that will run on WordPress, Blogger, Spruz, Ning and any other site where you can ad HTML then give the Skysa Toolbar a go, just follow my little linky to get your toolbar at http://www.skysabar.com/blazingminds.

Big thanks to John at Potpolitics for leading me on to this groovy toolbar

What’s this [intlink id="wordpress-stops-pinging-fix" type="post"]another blog post about WordPress 2.9[/intlink], yes that’s right I’m bringing you some more [intlink id="565" type="category"]blogging tips[/intlink] in the hope that I can help out fellow WordPress users that may be getting that awful message “Sorry, that file cannot be edited” when trying to edit a theme file with the [intlink id="52" type="category"]WordPress[/intlink] 2.9 built in theme editor.

So what is the solution to the problem?

I hunted high and low across the internet trying to find the solution, checking out the WordPress support forums trying to find a solution to why this would be happening and even though I spent a good few hours looking I didn’t seem to find much help.

So back to WordPress and into the theme editor and used the drop down box for theme to try to edit other themes:

Changing this to other themes and trying to edit them had the same problem, it had me stumped why!

When then I got a reply to a tweet I made from my good friend @digitalbeat666 and it was so simple it was obvious, why didn’t I think of it!

Yes folks it was that simple! So I tried activating another theme from the selection of themes I have on the blog, then went back into the WordPress 2.9 theme editor and it worked, fan-bloody-tastic, so yes it was that simple!

If you are having the same problems with your installation of WordPress 2.9 then simply change your theme, it could be as simple as your theme isn’t compatible with the latest version of WordPress.

So a big thanks to @digitalbeat666 for pointing out the obvious, cheers

It’s been a funny old week since I updated to WordPress 2.9, don’t get me wrong the new update is fantastic and some of the new features are extremely useful to use, but, and this is a big but, after installing the update, every time I made a post or used a ping back or trackback my WordPress blog would not ping or send pingbacks to other sites!

But now since making a tiny little tweak to the file “wp-includes/cron.php” I’ve fixed the problem!

If you look at the original code for cron.php you will find the following code:

$cron_url = get_option( ‘siteurl’ ) . ‘/wp-cron.php?doing_wp_cron’;
wp_remote_post( $cron_url, array(‘timeout’ => 0.01, ‘blocking’ => false, ‘sslverify’ => apply_filters(‘https_local_ssl_verify’, true)) );

You will notice that I have made a bit bold! This is what you need to change, change this to 1 so now it should read:

$cron_url = get_option( ‘siteurl’ ) . ‘/wp-cron.php?doing_wp_cron’;
wp_remote_post( $cron_url, array(‘timeout’ => 1, ‘blocking’ => false, ‘sslverify’ => apply_filters(‘https_local_ssl_verify’, true)) );

Now you should find that you pings are now working again, hopefully, I checked mine via the Ping Optimizer plugin and the log on the plugin confirmed a ping status!

Please remember before using this tweak, back up your original “wp-includes/cron.php” file, just in case, you never know

I’ve just backed up the database of my blog and used the auto update option in the WordPress dashboard and it’s updated to the latest version, so far everything seems to be running ok, and all my plugins seem to be behaving themselves.

You can get all these plugins via the links from this blog or you can use the “add new” option in your WordPress dashboard under plugins.

Broken Link Checker – This is great when you have made posts with links and over time these links may become broken, this plugin allows you to find them and edit them via your dashboard.

Dashboard: Scheduled Posts – If you have posts scheduled then this plugin will display them on your main dashboard, so you can easily see what posts are scheduled.

Insights – Adds a search box with options on your posting page to search your WordPress blog which is supported by Ask.com, Google, MSN Search and YAHOO, then add links and images to your post.

No Self Pings – There is nothing worse than posting on your blog with a link to an earlier post and getting a pingback from your own site, this plugin stops this.

Pending Post Indicator – This is ideal when you have guest bloggers, it will tell you on the main dashboard if you have any pending posts from a user waiting for review, enabling you to post guest posts quickly.
