Check Your SPAM in Your WordPress Comments!
Posted by Karen in blogging tips, tags: spam filter, wordpress security, wordpress tipsThere can be times when you hit that “Delete All Spam” button in your WordPress dashboard, but, sometimes not all the comments in the SPAM section should be there and every so often someone might have their comment classed as SPAM when it isn’t.
So when you get a list of SPAM comments in WordPress make sure you check to see if someone you know not to be a spammer has fallen in the wrong box, this can easily happen and one of the reasons can be that someone is commenting either too quickly or too much and if this does happen then usually that person will be blacklisted across many WordPress driven blogs.
To stop this from happening check your comments and if you do see a commenter that shouldn’t be in the SPAM section then “Approve” their comment and after a few times they should start going straight to the blog rather that in the Spam section in the comments.
So to recap! Don’t just click the “delete all spam” button, check your spam section and approve anyone that has accidently fallen into the section

I always check all the list before I delete the comments, I feel so sad when I leave a comment there in the dark for long time before got approved! and this is why I check spam comments like 20 times or more everyday!

In Blogger (blogspot), we can set commend moderation. I use it to make sure there are no spam comments. The bad side is that the more comments, the more you need to review and moderate. Another bad thing is that people’s comments don’t show up immediately.

I have to check my spam every other day, otherwise it fills up so I don’t bother scroll through several pages – also because the spam messages I receive today are so long that it each spam comment takes up the full height of my screen, that’s a lot of scrolling
There’s this one guy that comments on my blog a lot, *all* of his comments go to spam, every time. I don’t know why. I even had him stop using the keywords in his name (also because I don’t allow it), but Akismet still spam his messages. Weird.
But yeah, people really should check the spam queue just every now and then. Some gold nuggets might get lost in there.

I will admit to sometimes clicking delete all, then just as I have done that I’ve found a comment that wasn’t spam in Askimet. Also there have been times when I’ve selected all the spam comments, and rather than click DELETE spam comments I have clicked APPROVE!
Around 99.9% of comments caught by askimet are spam tho.

Over time you’ll get more, the more you comment on other blogs the more people will visit your blog

At times I don’t understand why a truthful commenter can go directly to spam but not our comment box? Perhaps a glitch or a mistake of the software, or Akismet just got confused with the amount of it. ^^ If time/condition permits, I’ll usually will scan through first before I delete; but it’s still risky to be placed under ’spam’ since most likely people wouldn’t bother to have a second look at it.
Thanks for the reminder, Karen.

Point taken, Karen. You never know how much someone may add to your blog, but was scooped up by Akismet and flagged as spam. Regular contributors are sometimes worth their weight in gold. It’s a shame to lose even one.

I normally first go to spam comments and go through them all and approve the ones that are ok. Then select the rest and delete them. Only then would I go to the comments and start replying to them.
I would say that the number of spam comments I approve is around 4-8%, not much in the end.

I recently started noticing that several of my regulars are ending up in my spam box. It took a few times of approving their comments and they were back to going to the regular comment list. Akismet does a great job of spam blocking but I think sometimes it’s a little over the top, but it’s better to the have the spam protection than end up with comments that don’t even contain real words in any language.
