Now to be honest, I’d not really heard of the 2006 graphic novel that Cowboys & Aliens was based upon, so I went in to the cinema with an open mind on what to expect from the movie, the title really gives you all you need to know really, it’s about Cowboys and Aliens!
So What’s It All About Then?
As I mentioned earlier it’s about Cowboys and Aliens, based in 1873 in the New Mexico, a wounded stranger (Daniel Craig) awakes in the desert with no memory of what’s happened and wearing a strange metal bracelet on his wrist, so he rides in to the town of Absolution where the local preacher (Clancy Brown) deals with his wounds.
So after a while of town life and being thrown in the county jail after being recognised as a wanted outlaw by the sheriff (Keith Carradine) the town is attacked by alien ships which lasso the villagers and take them away.
Suffice to say a posse is set up and they go looking for the villagers. So that’s about it really!
So What Did I Think of Cowboys & Aliens?
Too be honest, it wasn’t bad, but it’s not really one of those movies that I would rave about and want to quickly see again, I would watch it again if it came on TV, but I wouldn’t go out and buy it on DVD.
There is just something lacking in the film and for me there were moments when my interest in the characters started to slip away, now don’t get me wrong the special effects are good, the aliens are ok, but I just can’t put my finger on the problem with the movie.
John Favreau, the director, has one a great job with the action sequences and there are moments when you sit back up and think, “Hey this movies started to get going”. The film does stand out well as a western, with the music bringing that classic western feel to the movie, but Cowboys with Aliens just doesn’t do anything for me, I personally believe that if the movie had a slightly stronger storyline and we cared about the characters, then I probably would have enjoyed it a lot more.
As is, the movie seems to roll along like a helpless tumble-weed blown by the desert winds and never really wants to go anywhere in particular. If you want explosions, aliens and some CGI from Industrial Light & Magic, then by all means check it out.
If you are looking for an awesome movie that you can shout about from the roof tops, then go see something else.
Overall Rating For Cowboys & Aliens
It’s a 3 out of 10 for me, I enjoyed the night out, but not so much the movie!
