I generally find that most people do feel and express the Christmas spirit. It's a shame it can't be like that all of the time, but I guess some of the time is better than none of the time. Christmas must be particularly difficult for people having a rough time; you're right: those more fortunate should make a special effort to help out, especially for kids. Luckily our faith doesn’t celebrate Christmas so no pressure on us there for that specific Christmas Spirit Ideal – and the holidays aren’t hard on my family argument wise, but my husband’s side does get into it. Fights over White Elephant? gifts, how much we are all allowed to spend on gifts and who we are buying for (like why can’t I buy a little something for everyone? why do we have to put a price tag on the spending and then only get one person a gift?) fights over where to hold the cookie swap thing they do – who hates whose husband – and so on. I hate to admit it, but it kind of makes me laugh – its ironic in a way that if you celebrate Xmas – it should be about love, family and togetherness, giving – all that – but it seems to degrade to familial violence.
