Engaging Blog Reader Participation

These range from ending your post with a question, to hosting contests that require comments to enter or even implementing a poll in your blog just to have people produce some feedback and participate.
In an age where you are competing with millions of other online content providers you need to have your site stand out in your readers minds, no longer is it enough to just provide quality content, but you must find a way to engage your reader and get them to participate in something. By encouraging and prompting the reader to respond they are more likely to remember your site and come back since instead of just reading an article they actively responded.
It is then the bloggers responsibility not to “overdo” it, don’t spam the user with emails for commenting, or deluge them with thank you’s or requests to come back soon. Some sites implement points or entries for each participation that a user can collect and when they reach a certain number, the user gains some sort of benefit like a free advertising slot, or a free coupon for something.
As a blogger it is imperitive that you search the web and read other blogs, learn about how other bloggers are encouraging their readers to “engage” with the blog, find out what you like and implement something similar. Leave feedback for other bloggers if you think they have done something really unique or interesting, they will appreciate it and you will may also build a contact and a friendship by engaging someone else.

I think the best way to engage readers is to bring them some benefits link CommentLuv or reply to their questions in a timely manner

Re: the last paragraph, going to other blogs – you can optimize your blog for engagement with other bloggers: frequently linking to them and responding to specific posts of theirs, keeping posts short and being dofollow/using commentluv so they have every incentive to read and comment.
It’s not a strategy I’m the hugest fan of, although it will work.

I don’t really think that bloggers influence visitors very much simply by not “overdoing” it. Let’s face it – many blogs in the age of social networking are alike, and therefore users are getting used to being approached in the same way.
In my opinion, it’s not about pushing less, but about pushing differently – that will truly encourage reader participation. I mean, there are blogs out there with 500 visitors per day with no comments – but some with 50 where nearly every visitor leaves something. It’s the latter we should be focusing on and learning from.

Yes, what I like most about your post, is how the moving ad gadgets are below the post view, a worthy consideration when seeking audiences attention span, thank you, very positive approach.
As for comment getting, mostly a matter of whether you think its important an issue, having a goal oriented attitude, probably helps.

Thanks for the comments, I myself am always trying to tweak and experiment to see what works best in getting readers to keep coming back. CommentLuv helps other bloggers, but really doesn’t inspire or offer incentive for casual “readers” just gives other bloggers incentive to visit and leave a comment so they get some exposure and a “link” back if you have a dofollow blog.
Nigel, you are right of course about the comments vs the traffic, but too many times I have found blogs with 50+ comments per post when the blog itself gets less than 200 visits per day is the same 25 people plus 25 replies from the blog owner. In this case it is fine to engage your regulars, but its a false indication when you just have a small circle of blogging friends that just leave tons of comments.

Tough indeed Justin, engaging blog readers to your blog. The one thing I definitely agree is by visiting other blogs and see what they are doing. Thing is something might be working well today, but not necessary tomorrow. So keeping updated on trends and constant interaction with the sphere is really important. Simple but effective, kudos

Bringing a piece of yourself to the table and offering it up for display, thus making your blog more unique, more “you” is the best way, I find, to both engage your readers and make yourself memorable.. Unless of course you’re completely bland as a person, which I can sometimes be

I remember reading this post earlier from Blogengage, voted for it and never had the chance to comment. ^^ Fact is, I agree, it’s always tough to engage readers participation. A lot of hard work and efforts but can’t over do it. I don’t get too enthusiast when received the auto-sending emails thanking me for visiting and asking for subscription, but I know the intention is well. Still lots to learn and trials to be made to find ways that suit us and our readers.

Good tips on getting visitors to engage, however in my experience some of the best ways to get readers involved is to simply create unique quality content. This is particularly true if the topic of that content is somewhat controversial in nature.

Weird, I thought that Plenty of Fish only had like 1 employee, and his name was Mark. Clearly, I was mistaken, heh…
