Now to be honest, I damn well that I have a God awful Broadband Speed and I really do wish that BT could improve it my way. But moaning aside, I’ll get on with post.
If you are a fan of the @TheGadgetShow you will know that they have tried to champion the removal of the “up to” wording that BroadBand supplies use on their adverts etc, they’ve even put a page together with the contact details for all the major ISPs – as well as for OFCOM and the Advertising Standards Authority. It could be time you let you’re ISP know how you feel about the speed you were advertised and the speed you’re actually getting.
So I tried out the BroadBand Speed test that is on The Gadget Show website and wasn’t really surprised by the results which I posted to twitter via the website, as you can see the broadband download speed and broadband upload speed are awful:

So lets all join in the cause for us to try to get the speeds that we deserve and are rightfully paying for by join in with the The Gadget Show and showing these BroadBand ISPs that we are not going to stand for it much longer.

Hi there Karen, first I wanted to say thanks for joining me in this week comment week @blogengage it’s awesome and I see your right into it!
Now back to the topic at hand my internet sucks but I’m okay with this for a few reasons.
I only have a 5mb line so at most I can download at maybe 400k or 500k. the reason I put up with this line is because this specific company allows me to have unlimited bandwidth for uploading and downloading.
The other companies in my area have way faster lines but set limits on what I can upload and download. So tell me what good is speed it you only hit your bandwidth limits faster…
I did your test and I’m averaging what I should be so overall I’m happy with the service.

Thanks Brian, I love the “comment week” @blogengage will be doing some more visits shortly, just in the middle of writing up a new blog post

I hate my internet speed all though my test was pretty good, I am also at the office where we pay for a much higher bw level.
Great post Karen.

I’d just love it so that I could download an album from iTunes in around 10 secs and not in snooze mode

I am always getting the speed since I use it for free. It means however the speed is not matters for me — well not however but as long as the speed enough to blogging.

I get the speed I pay for… it just stinks. I keep threatening to fire my DSL provider, but it’s the hassle of having the new provider out to get me up and running that keeps me from doing it.
Still, the thought of streaming high def on demand has me ready.
Pity – my life is so busy these days! :p

Oh HD streaming, now that’s what dreams are made of
Mobile broadband is just as bad, I live in one of our big cities and manage a whopping 1 meg connection, so just being in a densely populated area doesnt guarantee solving anything for residential broadband. Mobile is slightly better, i can get a 1.5 meg download speed if the wind’s blowing the right way and the window’s open. Although with wind and an open window its not great for the usb modem falling out the window

As long as you’re not falling out the window with the usb modem

The Gadget Show gives me very low results compared to Speedtest.net: 0.79 Mbps for download and just 0.12 Mbps for upload against 1.69/3.23 Mbps. I think, they use only one server to test the download/upload speed (unlike Speedtest that have partners in all major regions). Such testing can’t be accurate, because there are too many bottlenecks on the way from your computer to their server and your ISP can’t be responsible for all of them.

I got the same results using The Gadget Show speed test as I did with Speedtest.net.

I haven’t noticed what is written at the bottom of their page: This speed measurement tool is… designed to test the speed of UK broadband connections.
I’m 10,000 km away from UK, right in the middle of Asia, so this test just doesn’t work for me.

Yep, it’s a big thing here in the UK with a campaign on at the moment to stop ISPs adding “up to” in their adverts and sales pitches

I’m not 100% certain what my connection speed is. When we joined Sky, it was 2Mbps, but I think it’s been increased.
I did check on speedtest.net, and my download is 1.6Mbps and upload is 0.37.
I think there is something with the use of bits and bytes that often confuse people – bits being 1/8th of a byte
Twitter: BlazingMinds
People do get confused with bits and bytes, did Sky mention an “up to” when you purchased broadband from them and how close are you to it?

In our area, often times we simply need to call our provider onto the carpet to perform. There has been a few times we simply called them to see if we are getting the best they offer and they were not giving us the best service. It takes calling and demanding sometimes.

That’s the problem, I think we all take our speeds for granted, ok we moan to ourselves, but as you say sometimes it takes calling and demanding.

I’m with O2 home broadband and I think they are awesome. They are slightly less awesome than BeThere but Be didn’t provide internet in this area when we moved house. Would recommend both!

The only problem with testing your “speed” is that there are so many variables, including which browser you use to test. For example, google chrome is the best for testing because is has the least amount of addons that will slow down your browsing speed. Depending on the number of hops you have to do to get to the test site, that in itself will also change your speed. The best true test is to download a file from a huge server farm with lots of bandwidth. Even that will give you different results, based on the number of user hitting the same site, the number of users in your area that are sharing your node, etc.
