Since posting this article when iTunes V9 originally came out, a lot of people seem to be still having the problem with upgrading their old downloaded tracks, so I thought I would repost this article. This information still works for version of iTunes from 9 upwards.

Those of us that have upgraded to the latest incarnation of iTunes may of noticed that the option to upgrade previously purchased tracks to the iTunes Plus versions has disappeared from the iTunes music store page.

Some users do have the option in the iTunes store page at the top right of the screen under quick links and others don’t, some can even get the option back by signing out of their account and then signing back in again, but for the majority of iTunes users the link to the iTunes Plus Upgrade page has gone, never to return.

If you do want to find the page to upgrade your previously purchased iTunes store tracks then simply follow this link to the iTunes Plus Upgrade page and you can then be able to upgrade your tracks to that better quality.

Hope this helps ;)

We were just talking about this on Twitter like a week ago, very nice Karen THANK YOU! I hated the new design, all though they upgraded my Apple TV as well and that update is much better.

It’s been a niggle of mine for a while, the fact that there were so many tracks that I wanted to upgrade and then poof the option disappeared with the version 9 upgrade, I’ve added the link in my favourites on my browser for future usage ;)

  3. Thank you!! I was getting into a rant the other day with someone about upgrading things but taking actual steps back in the process of upgrading.. I might still believe that, but you’ve at least helped overcome this hassle

Thanks for this! It seems like every time I upgrade to a newer version of iTunes, something goes wrong. In the past I had a problem where my song names would get cut off if they were too long, but then I was able to retype them back in without any problem. Of course it was still a problem because I didn’t remember the names of every single song that got cut off. Very frustrating. I have also read that with this newest update a lot of people are having issues with the font being unreadable, which is pretty annoying as well. -Jason

Following the link confirms that I have upgraded, thanks very much.

It’s maddening that they pulled the link but that all of the FAQs still refer to it.

I notice a bunch of DRM files still lying around after upgrading. Is there any way to confirm that I’ve gotten everything that could be upgraded?

rrr. I just tried this on my wife’s computer. She hasn’t upgraded her tracks. It smugly tells me that Itunes is now DRM free and gives no further information about how to upgrade existing tracks (the FAQ has a link that goes back to that page you point at, and a suggestion to upgrade your iTunes… we’re up to date :( )
