The Chrome browser extension *fixed everything*. That is such an odd, odd, and misleading problem. I just upgraded the remaining 200-some AACs on her account and picked up another 7 on mine. It smugly tells me that Itunes is now DRM free and gives no further information about how to upgrade existing tracks (the FAQ has a link that goes back to that page you point at, and a suggestion to upgrade your iTunes... we're up to date :( ) rrr.
