PageRank is an interested subject, which the number of comments and reactions prove. In my mind, it doesn't matter much. I got PR4 in a month when I started my blog, later it came down to 3 when I wasn't updating the blog that much. My traffic wasn't any higher on PR4 than it was on PR0. PR itself doesn't bring in traffic. It might give you a little boost if you rank in search engines in the first place, e.g. rank your blog a spot higher vs site with lower PR. But even then the reason might be the "actual" search engine ranking factors, PR just happens to be what everyone can see...

PR is a numeric value that we can easily compare, it is still constantly updated and it does have some effect. So I'd say PageRank does matter, because it tells that you are doing something right if it's going up or staying level, and on the other hand, you know you need to step up if it goes down. For PR to go down, the reason is usually that you're not updating often enough. And for the PR to go up, update often. Search engine rankings, SEO or not, but at least you have fundamentals of blogging in place, fresh content :)

PR is important to those that are a PR 5 and above it seems. I have 2 sights that are PR 5 and they are on the front page of google and I have 2 sites that are PR 0 and they are on the front page of google for there keywords as well. So i would say that PR rank does not carry the weight it used to in page rankings or traffic.

If people want to chase PR, so be it. I was able to snag a #1 SERP with one of my sites due to it's niche. That continues with maintaining the site being listed as #1-#3 for the last three years.

Bounce and click through I don't worry about either. Sites get tons of nonsensical landings on things having nothing to do with them, porn search strings being a good example.

PR can get you money. SERP can get you traffic. Without the traffic a site can't make money.

With a PR of 0, my one site makes more money residually than the rest.

In my opinion, PR's out the door in the next few years...same thing with the system created by IZEA, which in my opinion was a way to corner, monopolize, and control the blogosphere.

The interenet...we're still in the dark ages, kids. ;)

I'm managing to generate some traffic and getting backlinks. I guess I shouldn't worry about PR updates and keep working on it. guess I needed a different perspective. Thanks John :)

Karen, although I agree with John in his post, I am not really worried about it anymore and concentrating on the content, visiting people's blog, etc. Everybody has his/her personal things to worry about and Man I do not want Google PageRank to be on this list :D

I've been reading a few articles lately on the importance of pagerank so I find it interesting.

Pagerank in and of itself has no search engine benefit. Pagerank is not a search engine factor in ranking. It's an indicator, it shows you how authoritive a webpage is, it only indicates, it does not give value.

If pagerank vanished tonight, it would not change any rankings. In fact I've been hearing google might or will be changing pagerank to "Webrank". I don't know much about it yet but it's something to think about.

What pagerank will do is get you more advertisers and more money. Your site will be spidered more often and you'll have something to brag about. Other than that, I don't see any other big benefits.

That's just my point of view.

Recently, Google made an announcement that they have removed the PR on webmaster tools to avoid people worrying too much about it. I had a PR3 and now it is PR0. Did this affect my ranking on the SERPs? The answer is NO and believe it or not, contrary to what I was expecting, my traffic on search engines has increased (now accounting for 51%) and is reflected by the increase in both AdSense and Chitika earnings.

Now, is it important? I think it is not about importance but rather providing you with bragging rights, like ExtremeJohn said. It is one factor that Google uses to rank a website on their rankings, so in a way, the higher your PR, the faster google crawls your website and thus getting those new posts indexed very quickly.

My blog remained steady at PR3. Perhaps I should have exerted more effort at getting backlinks. Is it still important? I think so in the absence of a better alternative metric. Certainly, I'd hate losing mine. It's a psychic reward for me, especially because of lackluster Adsense earnings. :)

I don't know. I went from a PR3 Blogger blog to self-hosted a month or so ago and now have PR1. I noticed that I am not getting as many Google hits as I used to.

I read an article a while back, I think by Jan Geronimo, that discussed Google PR vs. VISIBLE Google PR. I wonder if there is anything to that?

Of course it still matters. We all want to be ranked highly, it's human nature! We want our sites and our content to be as visible as possible to as many people as possible. Until a new search engine comes along that people actually use, Google actual PR will continue to be very important.

I look at it the same way, my sites traffic continues to grow which ultimately means that the Page Rank updates really don't upset me that much. Having a great number feels good and gives you some good bragging rights.

From my understanding....from what I've read from people that know more than me about SE's...is that it's not exactly how google really sees your site.

For me it really doesn't matter. My PR hasn't changed in months, yet my google traffic is increasing every month.
