Halloween Costumes, kids, sweets and everything else!

So Halloween is upon us again and it’s that time when people are looking for Halloween costumes to wear, throwing up Halloween decorations and buying stacks of sweets to give to those unwelcome kids that are trying to scare the crap out of people!
Ok, so I do sound like a grumpy old so and so, but come on! What is the point of freezing your arse off on a cold winters night, knocking on peoples doors and threatening them with “trick or treat“, yes threatening, some older people are terrified to open their doors these days due to those that are taking advantage of a night..
I’ve never understood what the trick or treat has to do with a Gaelic and Celtic festivals of the summer’s end or the Celtic New Year, it’s just seems so out-of-place these days, but I suppose once people are used to doing something year in and year out, then they keep going with it.
Ok, it may be fun for small children to go round with their parents knocking on neighbours doors and screaming “trick or treat“, but why the hell would teenagers of 14 upwards do it, mainly because they are up to no good and just want to be a complete nuisance to people.
Further more, do the kids actually know what Halloween is? Do they think it’s just a chance to get free tooth decaying sweets from neighbours, a chance to dress up in silly costumes, or even a chance to have a bit of a late night up!
I don’t really know, personally I’ve never seen the point of it, but this is just my point of view and I dare say that some of you out there will put me in place and say how wrong I am, but who cares, I hate Halloween!

halloween has nothing to do with Celtic/Gaelic festivals – it is an imported american holiday that is tacky, stupid and just glorified begging

Couldn’t agree more. Round our way we used to get a few of the neighbours’ kids, which was fine, and we didn’t mind giving them a few sweets. But these days we only ever get gangs of youths, normally just after the pub down the road shuts! Needless to say we don’t bother opening the door, and we just have to cross our fingers that they don’t chuck a brick through our window…

Haha, extreme, but I guess it might do the job! Either that or when they say ‘trick or treat’, just reply ‘trick’ and give them a hand grenade

Karen, love the social buttons on the side of the site, among the best I have seen. Is it a plug-in or custom code, where can I get it?

It’s a WoprdPress plugin called “cute profiles” I’m glad someone likes them, I wasn’t to sure at first, but they are growing on me

I agree with you. Trick or treat was not something we did when I was a kid. It has been imported from the States and perpetuated by the retail industry so they can flog some more Chinese tat.

Halloween doesn’t exist on my culture, I don’t pay attention to it, but there is no problem in sharing the joy with others!

I am actually looking forward to Halloween tomorrow. I love seeing the joy on my kids faces. I do hate staying home and handing out the candy though. BTW, I also like the buttons. ..

Do you limit the candy your kids get? If they get a lot, making sure they eat it in moderation and not all at once. That’s two people that like the buttons so far, it looks like they’ll be staying

Do live in the US or the UK? I think Halloween seems to be treated quite differently in the two countries. It looks like a lot of fun in America (from what I’ve seen in movies, my primary source of education
). But in the UK it’s not really a big thing, and most of the people doing it are just trouble makers looking for some free food or an excuse to egg your house!
Speak of the devil, a couple of trick or treaters just came to my door as I was typing this reply. I dealt with it in the most mature way possible – by hiding in the dark until they’d gone

Wow, if you hate Halloween for those reasons, then I would imagine you hate Christmas because of the commercialism. However, fewer people actually die during the Halloween festivities such as Trick or Treating, horror movies, and partying, than they do during the Christmas festivities such as stampeding through malls in a pursuit to save a few freaking dollars on gifts that you’ll be making payments on for the next six months! People have DIED in pursuit of christmas gifts, and yet Halloween is considered the devil’s holiday? Hmmm…
To me, Halloween is just fun. It’s not the trick or treating, I stopped doing that in 2nd grade. Sure, I buy some candy in case we get a few knocks on the door. But to me, Halloween is about having fun, getting scared, and just pretending to be evil for a little while. It’s just fun, and it aggravates me that some people have some big problem with that.
And yes, Halloween has STRONG connections to the Catholic faith, so for those who think Halloween is the work of the devil, then you’re basically badmouthing Catholicism.

I am pretty Halloween’d out at this point, I spent the last two days running between 6 different stores taking pictures for our Halloween costume contest. Add my daughter and my son to the mix and I have been listening to Halloween stuff for like 2 months haha.

Halloween was great for me, it was so peaceful! No trick or treaters, lurvley, just a bottle of wine a DVD and some munchies

We really like dressing up in costumes. I was a nerd last night. Not the nerd I normally am, but kinda like Steve Erkel. I even had the special nerd walk down. It was loads of fun.
Our kids who are too old to Trick or Treat usually like to hand out the candy. I have mixed emotions about the candy. On the one hand, kids (and adults) really like and enjoy candy. On the other hand, it really is bad for their health, not just the teeth.
Anyway, it is a tradition here in the States, one that has been around for a long time. I doubt that it will stop any time soon.
By the way the edit feature is just great. I noticed a couple of spelling errors after clicking to submit. It works great.
