Star Trek has captured the imagination of generations of viewers. Its technology, in particular, has led to considerable prognostication about what the future will hold. While some of Star Trek’s technology seems unrealistic, some of the inventions seem plausible.
The Star Trek communicator was one of its most interesting pieces of technology. Many feel, however, that the modern cell phone is an even more impressive invention. With instant Internet connectivity anywhere that a tower is nearby, cell phones have provided access to information across the developed world.
The warp drive, however, might simply be pure fantasy. Scientists are only now finding the last particles in the Standard Model, and discoveries about the nature of physics has dampened optimism about traveling faster than the speed of light. Still, some scientists think that warp travel may be possible if certain theoretical particles exist. While some of Star Trek’s inventions may be unrealistic, the show has inspired many viewers to enter the fields of physics and engineering, so one could argue that Star Trek technology is now everywhere.
