Improve Your Alexa Ranking with the Official Alexa Chrome Extension
Posted by Karen in Blogging Tips, How To, Internet, TechnologyIf like me you are one the many that has moved away from the likes of Internet Explorer and Firefox in favour of the faster and more streamline Google Chrome, then you may be missing a few of your favourite plugins.
One plugin that many have mentioned in the past for FireFox and Internet Explorer was the Alex Toolbar and a lot have said that having the toolbar helps improve your Alexa ranking.
There is a selection of Chrome Extensions for Alexa, but up until recently, I’m not sure how recently, the Alexa toolbar wasn’t really available for the Chrome browser.
Anywho
I was over at Alexa checking out my stats etc and there were several sections saying that they were only visible with the Toolbar! “Oh Great” I thought, but on the off-chance I surfed to the Toolbar page to see if they had one for Chrome yet.
There it was on Alexa a version for my trusted Chrome.
So now you can have a handy icon on your Chrome browser that when clicked will give you the information for the website you are visiting without leaving the site. Hovering the icon will show you the websites Alexa Traffic Rank and clicking on it will show you the info from Alexa on the site you are on.

But Does This Improve Your Alexa Rank?
Well as you surf the internet the Alexa Chrome Extension will improve the ranking of the sites you visit, so in theory, as you visit your own blog writing comments, posting article and so on, you will be improving your Alexa rank.
So every little bit of surfing helps, I know what your thinking, why is improving your Alexa rank important?
Alexa is usually one of the first places that advertisers check to find out information about your website, so having a few nice stats does help you out and having the Alexa toolbar pulling in info for your site does help.
Also by using this it will also help Alexa build your related links as you visit a site and it has a link to yours, click on that link this will show the toolbar that a site is linking and vice versa
So there you go. Now I’m not an expert on these things, but I do know that when I used to use the Internet Explorer Alexa toolbar I did see a difference in my blogs Alexa ranking. So hopefully if Alexa Traffic Rank for Chrome acts in the same way, I should start seeing some improvements over the next few weeks or months.

I don’t know that much about Alexa (or its importance), but wouldn’t the same be true about using Google’s toolbar (and other tools) and thus be of more value to how your site does in Google? There are some internet gurus that proclaim using Google’s own tools is the key to a site’s success – perhaps more important for new sites that don’t have much interaction yet.

I have installed the Alexa extension, as well as the one for Firefox. While I know that Alexa rankings aren’t accurate in any way, many people do rely on that service for information on how popular a site/blog is, so I decided to go along with the crowd on this one.
With that being said, since I started using the extensions I have noticed the ranking for my blog improving. At the same time, however, I have also been more active online, so the two probably have been working in my favour.

Here’s the thing… if one person’s traffic is enough to make a statistically meaningful difference in your Alexa rankings… that’s just proof that you have so far to go it’s almost not even funny.
Sorry – the statistician in me shining through.
But think about it… even if you’re on a site all day – if your traffic is enough to move the needle significantly, that means there’s almost no other traffic on the site. I want my traffic to be 99.9% other people, and 0.1% me.
I have a long way to go. :p

Roboform. It’s not free and it’s not perfect. But if you get it, you’ll be able to use a single password manager for ANY site on ANY browser that has a Roboform extension.

To be very honest I’m not a fan of Alexa nor Google Chrome. I use the browser once in a while but it still has many compatibility issues with many websites.
None the less Google Chrome has come a long way and so has alexa. I noticed Alexa ranking being way closer to my own analytic stats and it’s always been far off.
Perhaps I can give this plugin a try and see if it’s something I like.

Karen,
Great post, I had heard Chrome getting an Alexa toolbar. All though I do use and like Chrome, I still mostly use Firefox. I use Firefox at work and when I am testing client websites. I use Chrome when I am at home, just surfing the internet.
There are still quite a few sites that don’t work with Chrome and that is the main reason I still use firefox.

I’m not too sure that visiting your own site with the Alexa toolbar will make that big of a difference, but I’m trying to increase (decrease?) the Alexa ranking myself so I added the alexa button (counter) and installed the toolbar in my Internet Explorer and I try to visit my site daily with the toolbar, then we’ll see later if my rank has improved or not.

I just stopped using Chrome because it kept freezing up on me and didn’t play nice with Firefox. I doubt you are going to see your own traffic move the needle at Alexa by browsing your own site because, as others have pointed out, your just one small user on the internet. Alexa is looking at unique visitors and page views–you will only be counted as a visitor once.
Comments never come into play when calculating rank but you may get credit for page views.
You would be better off focusing on content and attracting links that will attract more focused visitors than browsing your site all day.

Hi Karen
I am also a fan of Chrome it is a lot faster and I like the way I can just type in a query in the title bar and I’m quickly taken to the search. I do however make extensive use of Firefox with its million and one plug-ins for techie stuff and screen grabs.
Thanks for the information of the Chrome Alexa widget.
As there is some confusion by some of your commentators on Alexa I like to make a few points.
Alexa’s rating system is, as you say, dependent on the visitors having an Alexa widget or toolbar to be counted. This is also why Alexa can provide an analysis of users, which can be helpful to advertisers etc.
Alexa is an important factor in improving the website’s income. Some advertisers, particularly, TextLinkAds, will value their rate dependant on the Alexa rating. As they a fixed monthly fee they are a good way of boosting your monthly wage.
Alexa is biased towards technical people, gadget freaks and those interested in SEO. Trying to avoid stereotypes, but I can’t, the majority of those with Alexa widgets are male. Of course there are a few savvy women in the Alexa fold as well.
As a consequence there is a large segment of the internet world missed by Alexa. In particular those orientated towards female interests.
Going on the ratings
The rating itself is based on the number of hits on a website, by those with an Alexa toolbar widget. The hits can be improved by putting a small Alexa counter in the sidebar, which I have done. Then the counting is done from the number of actual visitors, whether they have an Alexa widget or not.
The number of hits are then counted up by Alexa and the site with the most number of hits is 1, the second number of hits 2 down to one of my dormant site with an Alexa rating of ten million. I’m reckoning ti will only need a couple of visits with my new, enhanced Chrome browser to make it jump a couple of million places.
Bear in mind that in the high ratings there are a lot of inactive websites, dead blogs or sites, such as a church group, which will not have many visitors that are that interested in technology. Therefore you should be able to jump past them very quickly.
Where a site has a very high number rating then it requires very few visits to drastically reduce the numbers. On my website, Beginning to Blog, which I launched on January 2nd, (I don’t know why, but I had a bit of a headache on January 1st), I’ve managed to pull the Alexa rating down from 4.1 million to 1.7 million. This is with visitor numbers increasing from around two a day to about fifteen. So not exactly an overwhelming number.
Quite a few successful blogs with a Google page ranking of 4 still seem to have an Alexa rating of just over a million. So assume that it is harder to reduce your rating as you move into a more competitive market.
I suspect that Alexa is more accurate the lower your rating. I note they give a far more detailed analysis of websites that are rated below the 100,000 mark. I suspect this is because they know the statistics are far more accurate.
How to improve the Alexa rating.
Write about Alexa – the people you attract to your site are almost certainly to have the little widget.
Write about Alexa elsewhere, such as a free article directory, with backlinks to your site.
What if your site is not technical? I advised a poetry website to write a page, not a post, about their technical development. Not to display it, but to have a link in their about page. From this they improved traffic and were able to make a little extra cash from affiliate links to their premium theme provider.
Twitter: begintoblog
says:
Don’t believe all you read on the net. I got part of my post wrong. Alexa multiplies each hit by an undisclosed number – I’m assuming this changes dependent on how high the rating number. Logically a site with a rating of over 4 million would have very few visitors, whereas a site rated less than 100,000, eg a news site like BBC or CNN, would have a lot of Alexa unregistered visitors.
The potential problem is shown up on Darren Rowse’s Problogger site where adding the more accurate Alexa counter actually damaged his rating. Of course most visitors to his site would be interested in SEO and a high percentage would already have the toolbar.

Karen,
I just started using google chrome two weeks ago because my computer is 64-bit and Firefox doesn’t work well on it. I downloaded the alexa toolbar for chrome, but i’ve noticed that my alexa ranking has dropped significantly in the past two weeks since I switched. It doesn’t seem to make much sense since my traffic has increased if anything. Have you noticed any issues like that? It doesn’t seem to be registering like the Firefox one. Thanks
