Sometime back I wrote a post about making the most of your RSS feed, now it’s time for a little advice on using your RSS feed with FeedBurner and Comment Luv, two very useful sites that will improve your linkbacks when you post on other blogs.

Comment LuvGoogle FeedBurner

Ok let’s get started, first of all you must grab the Comment Luv plugin for Wordpress or Blogger, it’s simple to install just stop by the Comment Luv website to get you hands on it.

So why have Comment Luv on your blog?

It allows your readers to leave a link when they comment on your blog to their most recent post and if you’re commenting on other blogs that use it, then it’s only fair that you give a little linky love back ;)

Using FeedBurner for your RSS Feeds

Now this probably the most important thing for you to day when commenting on other blogs using the Comment Luv plugin, by default when you “burn” your RSS feed with FeedBurner your URL links will not show the URL of your recent post but instead to the FeedBurner address of the post, which is what you don’t want! I mean if you going to comment on a DoFollow blog using the Comment Luv plugin you want the linky luv to go to your blog, not the FeedBurner URL.

So you will need to tell FeedBurner to use your URLs, this is easy to do:

Log into your FeedBurner account and select Configure Stats, then uncheck item link clicks (see below), now when you comment on a blog using comment Luv your recent post link will now be the URL of your blog post and not a redirect via FeedBurner..

FeedBurner Configure Stats

So there you have it, one more thing to add. If you are blogging, but also have a main site then make sure that search engines and RSS readers can find the feed to your blog on your main site, simple do this by adding a simple bit of code to the pages on your main site:

<link rel=”alternate” type=”application/rss+xml” title=”RSS” href=”YOUR FEED ADDRESS HERE” />

Simple replace the YOUR FEED ADDRESS HERE with your feed for example mine for Blazing Minds would be

<link rel=”alternative” type=”application/rss+xml” title=”RSS” href=”http://blazingminds.co.uk/feed/” />

Then whenever someone visits you main site they will now from the browsers search box that an RSS feed is available ;)

    Thanks for the info. I just changed my feedburner. I never understood what the configure stats page was for so I just kept the default settings. I’m glad to understand a little more about how this works.

    You will certainly gain a bit more link juice from other sites if it is unchecked ;) Have you tweeted @CommentLuv for help with CommentLuv not working?

    Good information, though I think Feedburner is providing false subscriber counts since it includes FriendFeed subscribers in the chicklet which are not necessarily true blog subscribers, which makes it highly inaccurate to know your RSS Subscibers just from the chicklet.

    I didn’t know about FeedBurner including FriendFeed subscribers, shame that, so I wonder what our true subscriber counts really are?

    Very useful information , I checked mine and it seems ok , FriendFeed subscribers counting as Feedburner subscribers is a big problem and makes it hard to find accurate figures , sure the blog owner can find out because he or she can analyze the data but I don’t think there any other way.

    thanks for the write up! I hope that some of my support ticket submitters will find this before asking me the same thing again!
    btw.. at the bottom of the post, the link to your feed should have /feed/ on the end if you want it to result in an xml feed instead of pointing to your home page

    Quite excellent advice: I love commentluv, it’s fun for me and the people who use it on my blog are getting rewarded, and that’s a great feeling. I do have to check that there isn’t any Feedburner redirect occurring with the URL’s I’ve created; again, thanks for the heads-up.

    I put this post on Stumbleupon: hopefully that’ll get it more attention.

    Thank you for this post. I just read somewhere – not sure where – that the word “feed” needs to be at the end of the URL linking back to our post. Is that correct? If so, how do we append the URL? This is the link that appears when I hover over my recent post link.
    Thanks,
