iPhone 3GS available on Orange with tiny usage!
Posted by Karen in technology, tags: iPhone, iPhone 3GS, O2, OrangeSo the iPhone 3GS is finally going to be available on the Orange network on the 10th November, but at what cost? And what are the options for those that wish to surf the net and use the iPhone to its full advantage?

Well the basic 8GB model on Pay As You Go (PAYG) will set you back £343 and a fair usage policy of 750MB, now personally I think the price isn’t that bad, but, the usage seems a bit low to me, surely with the way people use mobiles theses days for surfing the net, tweeting, checking emails and FaceBook etc. this seems a tad tight to me and should be either doubled or unlimited.
Of course you can also pay monthly, but, you still only get 750MB of fair usage!
So is it better to get your iPhone with O2 or wait for another service provider to start selling the iPhone in the UK?

I don’t think you will break through 750MB with ‘normal use’ of the iPhone. I’m paying €20 a month for a 1GB dataplan and I don’t think I’ve ever used more than 150MB a month. I always use WiFi whenever possible though (home and work) since it’s faster.
Nevertheless, in 2009 (soon 2010) you should be able to get more than just 750MB worth of data, I’d say that.

Maybe 750MB isn’t as tight as I thought!

Well, it ain’t pretty, but it ain’t totally useless either. Of course it depends on usage and such.

I don’t live in the UK and I don’t know what the Orange network is. I just want to commend you on such a beautiful and informative website!

I’ve never had a smartphone so I’m not sure how much data transfer the average user will get though, but I agree, 750Mb sounds pretty stingy. I’m pretty sure Orange’s more standard offering is 500Mb, which is even worse! A friend of mine just got an HTC Hero on Orange, and he’s messing about on it constantly, so it’ll be interesting to see how close to his limit he gets.

I have had my iPhone since the summer but have no idea how many Mb’s I use. I know that the 3G can be very slow sometimes though so using lots on that might be difficult, so I prefer wi-fi.

Yeah I guess that’s true, you’d probably give up out of frustration before you even reached your 750Mb limit! Still, it’s nice to know you’ve got it there if you need it, so I think I’d rather have a bit more. Other networks seem to offer unlimited usage, although admittedly they no doubt have a fair usage policy that is nowhere near unlimited!
