King Of Devil’s Island – Blazing Minds DVD Review

Bestyreren and Erling

So recently I was given the opportunity to watch an upcoming DVD and Blu-Ray release of the King Of Devil’s Island, a somewhat intriguing and powerful movie from Scandinavia.

King Of Devil’s Island – Blazing Minds DVD Review

Now I am a big fan of movies in their native tongue and for me having a movie dubbed really spoils it, luckily King Of Devil’s Island is in Norwegian with English subtitles, so you get the real feel of the power from the actors in their own language, which is always a must for me.

Bestyreren and Erling - King Of Devil's Island

King Of Devil’s Island is set in 1915 and is based on a true story of a group of young boys sent to a the rather remote prison of Bastøy, the prison is meant to be to rehabilitate the boys, but instead they are put through a daily regime of physical and mental abuse at the hands of the wardens.

With the arrival of some new boys to the island, Erling (Benjamin Helstad) and Ivar (Magnus Langlete), things begin to change as a rebellion is set in motion.

I do have to say that I wasn’t really sure what to expect with King Of Devil’s Island, after reading the blurb, I was a bit unnerved by what I would be watching, but, after the first few minutes of the film I was completely gripped, it’s not very often that I say a film is powerful, but this one certainly is.

Bestyreren (Skarsgard) - King Of Devil's Island

With a stellar performance from Stellan Skarsgard as the  boss over the prison and the sheer emotion that is portrayed in the film is brilliant, like I said earlier, once I started watching King Of Devil’s Island, I just couldn’t stop, the lighting and camera work, as well as the production and directing is so nicely done.

The scary part about the film is that it’s based on a true story, what these boys must have gone through, must have been horrific for them and though their story has been told, it still makes you wonder how anything like this could have been got a way with at the time.

For me King Of Devil’s Island is a stunning movie, OK it’s not full of all those special effects and CGI that we’ve all come to get used to these days in films and that’s what makes the film even better, it’s a down to earth film with a story-line that pulls you in and makes you feel for the characters, it’s gripping, emotional and stirring.

Erling confrontation (Helstad) - King Of Devil's Island

King Of Devil’s Island will be out on DVD and Blu-Ray on the 29th October certificate 15 , my advice is to check it out and see it for yourselves, you can find out more about the film on the Official Facebook page and via Arrow Films on Twitter.
