How To Make Some Revenue With URL Shorteners
Posted by Karen in Blogging Tips, Twitter, Website ReviewsNow those of you that are avid readers of my blog will have noticed that the other day I posted about my earnings for April, shortly after posting that article I starting checking out another site that some of you may find useful if you are using URL shorteners when you are Tweeting on Twitter.
The site is called Adf.ly it allow you to earn every time your tweet, using the adf.ly link is clicked, so I thought I would check it out a little further.
It’s a simple site to use, all you do is enter the URL you wish to shorten, very much like other websites that do the same thing and viola your URL is shrunk and will now earn each time it is clicked, simples
Your link will look something like this: http://adf.ly/48668/mylikes and when clicked will first go to an advertisers site before going to your chosen link, though there is a “Skip Ad” button on the page, so your clickers don’t have to sit through the Ads, now I’m not going to say this will make you loads of money and the Ads may get on peoples nerves, but it is another way of earning from your blogging and tweeting etc.
Now on to the important thing, how much will you earn?
On my test of the website one of my links had 11 clicks and has earned $0.01450 not much I know, but bearing in mind that the minimum payout for the site is $5 then I suppose that’s not too bad. So it roughly means that for every 1,000 visitors earns $2, not much I know, but every little helps.
So what do you think, is it worth using or do your prefer sites such as bit.ly to shorten your links?

I’m not convinced. For that tiny amount of money, it’s probably best to use a shortener people recognise and trust rather than risk using a money making one. I personally don’t like ow.ly either for instance, as they insist on that silly bar at the top of the page – doesn’t look professional for me.

I’m giving this system a try for a while, just for the sake of seeing how it works and I’ll be updating this post later on, with Hootsuite you now have two choices for the shortener, one with the toolbar and one without

I agree with Jorgen on this one. I feel that it’s better to use a trusted source rather than make a few dollars on the side. Think of the long term benefits; by using better looking links you’ll get more click throughs which increases the chance of sales on sites offering a more lucrative product. Always think Big Picture

Thanks but I do not think that we can make good money from such type of program. I already joined in sponsored tweet and like other programs, but nothing any earning till now.

I guess this comment is somewhat related, but we attended PubCon in Las Vegas last year and one of the speakers mentioned having your own url shortener hosted within your domain. Folks start using the ‘free’ service and consequently the links become a method of inbound links. Of course, the shortened url would be nofollowed as it left your site. I would imagine there are all sorts of revenue producing ideas that can be garnered from hosting your own url shortener.

Making money online with url shortening services is pretty lazy and it’s impossible to feel richer from it. The earnings is too low that no one would want to spend time over it unless it is done in automated way.

I can see both points of view on this one,
For:
This is great for making a bit of money for the people that work hard at keeping their twitter profiles up to date so in a way it enables you to do this for a reason.
Against:
You are in fact “spamming” your followers and I think things like this are a sure way to lose yourself followers, not me however I have just jointed twitter and will be following the next time I login!

Trusted is better yes, I’d also rather use one that actually tracks clicks; not just for cash.
Does it?

I’m not convinced by it as a long term strategy. I think most users will see it as a new type of Spam. I think the best strategy for making money from Twitter is to use it as a way to build up relationships and new blog readers and monetizing in a more subtle way. Making money from Twitter directly is always going to be hard to do without risking losing followers, or worse losing the trust of your readership.
Personally, if I clicked a link to what I thought would be a blog post and it turned out to be one of those advertising splash pages, I would hit back instantly. So you might make your money from the advert, but your follower might not actually make it to your blog post (or whatever)

I’ve seen these before and although they are mildly annoying, they can always be skipped and if the desitination post is high quality then the annoyance is a small payment I don’t mind the blogger getting.
Now to modify this so I can use my own url shortener!

I think everyone have already mentioned about trusted links and the like. To add, to get $5 for a payout would take almost forever. If 11 clicks give approx. 0.01 cent then, it would take about 5500 clicks to reach a payout. What more if the click count depends on the geo-location where the clicks happen?
This scheme reminds of an ad network I tried recently which only requires a dollar in order to get paid but the worst thing is, making a single cent is not even possible to reach.

This is the first I ever heard of this one. I doubt that I would give it at try though. I’m using MyLikes already and I think that is enough tweeting with ads for me. It looks like they might be connected to MyLikes by the url. Thanks for the heads up on this one.

Thank you for the info, but I don’t really think this is worth it. I don’t think $2 is worth putting 1000 visitors through the frustration of advertising, haha

I don’t really feel comfortable subjecting my readers to an ad before they see content that they were hoping to see by clicking on my links. It’s as though I could lose them forever for playing smart.

I agree with the other comments. I don’t think this is a good idea. The amount of money you can earn is almost nothing and to upset your followers with this you risk loosing more than you can gain.

I was trying it out, just as a review process of something I came across, I still prefer to use bit.ly
Hmm the money thing sounds cool but I think you will annoy a lot of readers by using tools like this. Advertising with banners is fine cause people got a choice to click them or not but this way you surprise them and not in a good way.
Just my opinion but I would stay away from ads like this!
