We all love a great comedy movie, but what separates the great from the good? Sometimes the actors are so talented that they can make you laugh just with an odd look. For a movie to be really great you need the funniest people mixed with a killer script and excellent production skills. Here we take a quick peek at the truly exceptional comedies that will remain in movie legend status forever.
Animal House
Any film starring the late and great John Belushi is bound to have high comedy content. But this opus goes beyond the pale when it comes to laughter. It is the original American college comedy, and has often been copied but never matched in terms of genius hilarity. John Landis directed this classic and even today this film has the ability to enrapture audiences worldwide.
Beverly Hills Cop
Another comedy legend, Eddie Murphy, stars as the happy go lucky cop Axel Foley. The film spawned four sequels but the original was never matched when it comes to crazy capers and brilliant comedy acting from Murphy. The film was originally going to be a more serious type of activity but as soon as Murphy rocked up to the audition, it was only ever going to be a funny film!
Groundhog Day
Bill Murray has the rare capability of being able to make audience scream in hysterics without even opening his mouth. He has that dazed and confused expression down to a tee. This movie is probably his best work as he plays a hapless soul trapped in a twenty four hour cycle of repeated routines. It is such a funny and clever idea that no one has ever tried to make a similar film, it just couldn’t compete with this classic.
Shaun Of The Dead
This British spoof zombie film is one that you can watch over and over without getting bored. Simon Pegg has gone on to act in over a dozen comedies, but he has never had a funnier vehicle for his comedic talents. It has so many clever scenes that you really need to watch the comedy at least three times to appreciate the genius-like direction quality of Edgar Wright.
The Forty Year Old Virgin
Steve Carrell came to the public’s attention acting as the hopeless character in this hilarious blockbuster. The film also stars Seth Rogan and Paul Rudd as his less than genuine work colleagues. The scene where they convince Carell’s character to have a chest wax is one of the funniest few minutes ever caught on camera.
Doctor Strangelove
When you combine Stanley Kubrick with Peter Sellers, the outcome is always going to be first class. This anti-war comedy is a clever yet tragic look at the cost of nuclear war in the last few decades. It combines deep seated resentment with the blackest of comedies and works fantastically well. Sellers was probably the finest comedy actor of his generation and this opus is a testament to his true genius.
Dan Mickelson leads a group of stand up comedians in Melbourne. He loves watching comedy movies and draws a lot of inspiration from them. Besides his professional commitments, he also likes blogging and has suggested some great comedy movies in today’s post.

Those are all great movies and I have seen most of the movies on this list at least 30 times and will watch them whenever they are on TV.
But I think you missed a few good ones as well. I would have to add Super Troopers and Beer Fest both great movies and by the same production company…
