Sinister - Once you see him, nothing can save you.
Found footage helps a true-crime novelist realize how and why a family was murdered in his new home, though his discoveries put his entire family in the path of a supernatural entity. – IMDB
Now from the trailer of Sinister you do get an unnerving feel of something foreboding with the cine-film footage that Ellison Oswalt (Ethan Hawke) finds in the attic, giving you the idea that the film is going to be a shocker and a horror.
But actually Sinister is more of a chilling thriller, that doesn’t really have that much that is going to make you leap out of your seat, screaming your heart out.
Yes there are those moments when you get the parts in the film when something happens when you least expect it, but deep down you know something is going to happen and sadly most of the shocking bits have been shown in the trailer.
Although Sinister is not going to be something you may have hoped for from the trailer, it’s not to say that it’s a bad film, it’s not the worst in its genre, but it’s not the best.
The actually storyline for the film isn’t really that bad and had me gripped on wanting to know what happened to the families and what or who exactly, was killing them.
Keeping an audience interested in what is happening can be a bit of an issue these days, with most films doing what has already been done before, but Sinister does keep the interest going, although towards the end it does drag a little and may be could have lost a few scenes.
Director Scott Derrickson, did do a good job throughout the film, but you really don’t get to feel for that main characters, they seem two-dimensional and really lack any appeal for the audience to actually take pity on them and what they are going through.
Sinister is one of those films that is catering for the 15 upwards age group, it has its moments of suspense, blatant loud noises in the attic and outbursts of load music that work on these types of movies.
The other thing that is going to pull in a particular age group in to the film is Paranormal Activity, as mentioned in the trailer, it is brought to us by the producer of Paranormal Activity and from listening to teenagers waiting to go in I could hear them saying “This is going to be amazing it’s by the same people who did Paranormal Activity”, well the producer of the movies anyway.
It is a lot better that The Possession which I reviewed a little while back and so much better than The Devil Inside.
As I mentioned earlier, it’s not really going to have you screaming, but if you are between the ages of 15-21 then in may make you jump or even cling on to your friend sitting next to you.
Overall Thoughts For Sinister
If you want a chilling thriller then this is certainly for you, Sinister certainly had its moments of making you feel slightly at ease. Definitely one for the less hardened horror fan, interesting and not a bad turn of events for the final act of the film. Like films like Paranormal Activity then you’ll probably enjoy this.

This is a great review. You were very balanced. I might be a bit more direct in my criticism in that I felt it was cliche and old hat. Nice job as usual.

Hi another good review, I was hoping that at this time of year approaching Halloween that there might be a good Horror flick which might appeal to this age group as well as those in their late 20′s and upwards. But it seems like this one might not be

It’s not the best in the world, but it’s certainly not the worst of it’s type that’s out at the moment
