I am so impressed by all the connections one can find with social media sites. BUT there are such an infinite number of them, how does one ever know if one has touched them all? I feel like a man drowning in quicksand…the harder I struggle (to connect with all the different ways to “talk” to people), the deeper into confusion I sink. I think back fondly sometimes of how simple things were when there was virtually nothing out there but MySpace and Facebook. I would love some recommendations from others about which social media sites they prefer to use to connect with people and why.
Because I am not 14, it is harder for me to learn new applications and devices; I have a head full of pre-computer-era junk that I have to delete before I can enter any new information. Processing info about computers, electronic devices, etc., is a much slower endeavor for me. My niece is 6, and she is already surfing the web with ease. It makes me feel really old to have her try to explain the web pages and what they do. Another issue is technical support. Unfortunately, most people who work in tech support speak to those of us who are asking for help in a language they and they alone understand. Because of this, the answers they give are often not helpful and frequently only add to my confusion. Guides or how-to manuals are the same way. They assume a level of knowledge that many users (at least those of us over 40) simply do not have.
So, please, all you young people, have pity on us. We are trying as hard as we can to make this knowledge our own. Trying, and even sometimes succeeding.

Honestly speaking, I haven’t not yet linked up my FB account with my blog, don’t know why I haven’t done such till now – guess I just kept the blog to myself instead of also giving it a “personal touch.”

Great post! I feel so overwhelmed by all the various social applications and often forget which sites I’ve joined. I just realized that I don’t even know how to use Twitter properly. I don’t know how to set up a Facebook Fan page and sometimes feel as if I suffer from blogging dementia. I need step-by-step visuals with 18-point type.

I get like that myself sometimes and then realise that I’m already a member of the network I’m trying to join

Funny stuff, I’ve thought to myself more then once, who the hell is already using the Denis_Edell username?!?!?!…..oh wait…

There are so many social sites out there and you can’t use them all. It is almost impossible especially because every one of them has it’s unique features and it takes some time until you learn them all, but the fact is that social media is very powerful and we need to take advantage of it.

I have my facebook tied in with my blog. It’s actually helped out quite a bit having facebook buttons on my blog. Posting my blog posts on facebook has gotten me about 1/2 of my traffic which is great.

I don’t get that much traffic coming back from Facebook, my traffic usually comes from Google and Twitter

How did you do that? (tie in your facebook with your blog)

I feel for ya, I was one of those signing up for all and not using any. I now need to start over slower and with fewer…much fewer.

Slow, slow, quick, quick slow

I’ve thought that myself, which is why I’m thinkin’ maybe just stick to the blogging community networks, where I can post articles of my own…..something that’s frowned upon while commenting. LOL
May be the social network should start to consider that their users do not consist of teens and young adults only.
May be they should re-work their user interface to make it more accessible for older folks too.

Very well said there Timmy, maybe someone should start a social network for those of a certain age only!

You might consider LinkedIn to be it, being for professionals only as it is.
I can’t understand how you feel because I’m only 21 and I can quickly learn the ins and outs of a social network. However, I agree to the suggestion of Timmy. Hmmm…That makes me think if there is a social network for the adults only.

I am actually building a social media site for bloggers right now.
This network will help bloggers get their post seen in various social media sites. My hope is that my new site will make blog marketing more effective, so that bloggers can spend more time creating quality content on their blogs..

Please post here when you get finished with it and it’s ready to use! I would be VERY interested in that.

It’s definitely a challenge, and with social media sites changing their layouts, format, functionality, etc, so often (Facebook is infamous for this) it gets even tougher.
And it can feel like so much pressure to join as many as you can because so-and-so is on this site and asks you to join, and this group is on that site and sent you an invite…
I would recommend just sticking with one or two, like the two main sites (Facebook and Twitter) until you get the hang of them. Oftentimes, those two are all you need.

I thought I am the only one who is having this kind of problem.
Even if we don’t like it, we still need to learn how to use social media.
You cannot get information about social media by reading, we need to used them to experience it ourself.
I wish I am 10 years younger to understand them all….

I’ve experienced the same exact thing. Most of the things I know about Facebook, I’ve learned from my little sister. When I try to figure things out for myself, I feel like I need a “Facebook for Super-Dummies” book. I think I prefer Twitter because it’s so much easier to figure out, and the top experts are accessible and happy to answer questions.
I have also had a bit of trouble keeping up learning the latest and greatest social networking tools. We have actual jobs and bills to pay and kids of our own. It is great that people are putting out quick tutorials and evaluating the sites before we even get to them.
Hello Joseph, I actually understand this issue, because I can still remember when I let my mother on the computer for the first time. Man that was a good laugh, the fact was the she could make that pointy thing go where she wanted, and she held the mouse awkwardly.
I tried to explain to her the best way I could, some of the concepts but I don’t think she understood all that much, although she still looks at pictures or movies when I ask her, she has no desire to try to handle a computer again

TBH, there is a way of connecting with others that is a huge plus to Google as well. Little hint, you can find these sites from your Google Profile – go set one up if you don’t have one already
