So you’ve probably all read the rather mixed reviews that John Carter has got lately and it constantly being compared to Avatar, but the real question on everyone lips is “Who do you listen to about John Carter?”

As with all my reviews this is how I found the film and the use of the 3D etc, I’m not a professional film critic and I’m just a fan of going to my local @ApolloCinemas and giving out my point of view about a film, who better to review a film like John Carter than just another movie going fan of cinema

John Carter 3D – Blazing Minds Film Review

So the film is an adaptation of the science fiction book by Tarzan creator Edgar Rice Burroughs and the story goes that John Carter is transported away from 19th century Virginia USA to the planet Barsoom or as we know it Mars!

John Carter (Taylor Kitsch) finds himself a prisoner of the 12 foot high creatures (Tharks), but he soon gets embroiled in the battle that rages across the planet, saving the Martian Princess, brings him even more involved and so battle commences and a love interest ensues.

The special effects in John Carter are very well done, but I just couldn’t stop thinking of other films that it was reminding me of such as Avatar, Star Wars and Dune, may be this is all down to the John Carter stories have been pilfered, so many times for ideas for other films that something was bound to feel like something else.

I wouldn’t really say that the 3D isn’t the best I’ve seen, yes it works, but perhaps not as well as it should do, the depth is there but the coming out of the screen isn’t so much, some sequences such as the procession through the streets and the battle sequences worked well, but they still could have had more, may be too much was going on at once!

John Carter features some well-known faces including Ciarán Hinds, Dominic West, James Purefoy and the voice talents of Willem Dafoe and Thomas Haden Church, to name but a few.

The Tharks are nicely animated as well as some of the creatures on Barsoom, which must have been a nightmare for the animators, as a lot of the animals have more than four legs, even the Tharks have four arms.

Overall Thoughts For John Carter

An enjoyable film that most Sci-Fi fans will enjoy, but it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, if you have seen a lot of Sci-Fi films over the years then some parts of the film may give you a sense of deja vu. But for me I enjoyed the film, it was fun, slow at times, but these slow bits are made up with some great action pieces.

Strictly Come Dancing Final To Be Shown in 3D!

The whole show is experimental, so it will be interesting to see if there will be any cock-ups It will also be interesting to see how the live final works in 3D using some state of the art 3D cameras for the show.

Bruce and Tess - Strictly Come Dancing 3D

Mind you there is a bit of a scary thought, will Brucie be playing to the camera a bit more than usual to try to show us the show is in 3D, I hope not as this sort of thing usual tends to spoil the enjoyment of something in 3D.

Though I am looking forward to seeing the dancing in 3D as the effect of the outfits worn by the contestants should be quite impressive, if all done correctly.

So if you love Strictly Come Dancing then why not pop to once of the local cinemas listed below and grab your tickets before they are all sold out, tickets are on a first come first served basis

It Doesn’t Stop There If You Live Near Rhyl!

Not only is Strictly Come Dancing being shown in 3D live, but my local @ApolloCinemas is also having a Winter Weekend on the 17th and 18th with rides and stalls. The Taste Academy will be selling baked goods and Christmas themed goodies.

So get on down on the 17th and 18th and join in the fun, you just never know you may just catch a glimpse of me and @SlappyBear having some fun

Who Is Tin Tin?

For those who have no idea about Tin Tin, then let me give you a little bit of a rough guide, Tin Tin first appeared back in 1929 in a Belgian newspaper and was brought to life by Georges Rémi or as we know him Hergé.

So Tin Tin himself is a Belgian reporter that has a knack of solving crimes and capers with his dog Snowy, slightly drunk Captain Haddock and the quite comical Thomson and Thompson.

Bringing Tin Tin To The Big Screen

Now in the 21st century Stephen Spielberg and Peter Jackson have brought Tin Tin to life in the form of a 3D CGI Movie, but keeping with the original character designs and time from the book, we get an adventure film very much like Indiana Jones as Tin Tin (Jamie Bell), Snowy and Captain Haddock (Andy Serkis) set off on an adventure to find a lost treasure that once belonged to Captain Haddock’s ancestor.

Keeping an eye on their adventure is the evil Ivanovich Sakharine (Daniel Craig) who is also after the treasure and so the race is on to find The Secret Of The Unicorn and it’s treasure.

Tin Tin: Action, Adventure and Comedy in 3D

I do have to say that I wasn’t too sure how Tin Tin would work in CGI, but the characters have been brought to the screen without losing too much of their charm from the original book, we even get an artist drawing Tin Tin at the beginning of the movie and it’s the character from the books, which is a nice touch.

As I mentioned earlier, the film is very much like Indiana Jones with is chases, action and some wonderfully over the top set pieces that are just brilliant.

Thomson (Nick Frost) and Thompson (Simon Pegg) are nicely done as well, with their comedic repertoire, though I would liked to have seen a little more of them.

Snowy, Tin Tin’s trusted companion, is wonderfully done and you really fall in love with his reactions to situations and his antics.

The use of 3D is nicely done with it been worked in to very well, though a couple of points where it’s just blatant usage of 3D, Ivanovich pointing his cane into the audience, but besides that, the sequences such as the chase for the clues through a city on a motorbike is brilliant.

Overall Thoughts For The Adventures Of Tin Tin

Even if you’re not a fan of Tin Tin, this is a fun movie to watch, it’s an enjoyable night out, the CGI is perfect for the film, specially on the Sony 4K system @ApolloCinemas, with the characters being done very well, Tin Tin is a fun film for both kids and adults of any age

So I’m giving Tin Tin 9/10, here’s hoping that the next two sequels are going to be this good if not better

Last night was another night for me to visit my local cinema, the Apollo Cinema in Rhyl, to check out the film Shark Night 3D.

Shark Night 3D, Jaws For The 21st Century!

Now I have to say that for most, including myself, there is only one good shark movie and that has to be the all time classic “Jaws”, but I went in to see Shark Night 3D in the hope for a few jumps and a bit of gore!

So the film starts with a shark attack which really reminded of the attack in Jaws, an homage possibly

Then we get to main cast for the movie the seven people that you know something nasty is going to happen to including Joel David More (Bones, Avatar) and Sara Paxton (Superhero Movie, The Last House on the Left). So we see them one by one getting attacked by sharks in a lakeside paradise, why are the sharks there? Well that’s gets answered later on in the movie, so I won’t spoil it for you

Gore And Shocks!

A lot of blood, but really not that much gore, must be the 15 rating, as for the shocks, I have to say I didn’t jump once watching Shark Night 3D, so I was a little disappointed there, though there were some jumping at some points during the film.

Another thing I noticed is that some scenes didn’t seem to be in 3D! Shark scenes were definitely in 3D, but at certain points of the film, when I removed the glasses, they were in standard flat 2D.

So unlike some other movies such as Avatar and Final Destination 5, it seemed that Shark Night 3D isn’t entirely in 3D.

Is Shark Night 3D Worth Seeing?

It all depends on you really, I do have to say I did enjoy the movie, though to be honest, I think it’s all been done before and better. The movie is a modern day B-Movie, it’s silly has some rather dodgy acting and lines, but overall it’s a bit of a laugh.

The sharks are nicely done, the underwater 3D is good, but it’s like a slasher movie with sharks, you could say that the kids are at Crystal lake and the shark is named Jason It has a simple storyline that’s easy to follow and is fun to watch, but it’s a movie that you’ll see once for a night out and not really rave about.

Overall Rating For Shark Night 3D

It’s a fun night out, an excuse to see sharks in 3D and a real reason for another Shark Night Not to be made

So I’ll have to give the movie 3/10.

OK so if you’ve read my tweets or facebook posts, you may have seen that on Monday I was little disappointed in not getting to see Captain America, but last night certainly made up for it!

So after missing out on opening night of the new revamped Apollo Cinema in Rhyl on Monday, I popped in to the Apollo yesterday and got my tickets for the movie for an evening showing and even better I became the Mayor on foursquare, so I got a free ticket

Anywho! More about the Apollo Cinema later

The Birth of Captain America

Without giving away an spoilers, well I hope not anyway The film starts in present day with the search for Captain America (Chris Evans), we then shoot back to the 1940′s where we learn how a sickly Steve Rogers became “The First Avenger” after being constantly rejected by the military due to his health & size and his part in World War II and against the dreaded Johann Schmidt aka the Red Skull (Hugo Weaving) the head of HYDRA research department in Nazi Germany.

It’s great to have the back story of one of my favourite Marvel characters and this adaptation of the Comic Book is really fun, fast paced action, fantastic effects and really enjoyable. I specially love the introduction of Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper), yes folks the father the Tony Stark (Ironman) and his part in the birth of Captain America.

Captain America A Complete Marvel in 3D

Being a fan of 3D movies, I was really looking forward to seeing this in 3D and I wasn’t let down, the 3D is nicely done with none of that blatant “Shoving it in your face and shouting IT’S 3D!”, it works really well with the explosions etc. and becomes part of the movie and not just a gimmick

Hey It’s Stan Lee!

One of the moments that always catches my eye in any Marvel movie is spotting Stan Lee and yes Stan is there, but I’m not telling you where he is, look for him yourself

So What Did I Think of Captain America?

Too be honest I couldn’t fault it, it’s one of those films that is really enjoyable to watch and no I’m not just saying that because I’m a Marvel comic book fan

But if you love a good action movie then I would really recommend the movie, specially in 3D but even in 2D is would be just as good.

Hang on What About The Apollo Cinema?

Ah yes I did mention earlier about the Apollo Cinema in Rhyl where I went to see the movie.

I do have to admit it’s been some years since I’ve been there, mainly as I love 3D and until recently they didn’t have it, but since the revamp of the cinema, I just had to give it a try.

First of all the new design for the cinema is really nice, and the bar with the sea view is lovely, the photo on the right is from the window in the bar, where we sat while I had a really tasty Costa Cappuccino (me and my cappuccino LOL).

The staff is very helpful, polite and well presented, which is nice to see these days as some places just don’t care about their customers. I would specially like to thank the staff member that helped my mother when she had a little trip when leaving her seat after the movie

The seats in the cinema are really comfortable, specially the leather recliner ones at the back where we sat, loads of leg room as well, which is a must specially during a long film.

The picture quality is crystal clear and even the 3D was crisp with loads of detail, great sound via a roaring 7.1 system to surround you in the film you are watching.

Overall Movie and Cinema Ratings

I’ll give Captain America 8.5/10, not the best Marvel movie but still really enjoyable and the Apollo Cinema gets 9.5/10 for its brilliant customer service and revamp!

James Cameron is no stranger to the Special Edition genre, remember Aliens, The Abyss and Terminator 2. But those films were released with their Special Editions on DVD, this time we get the Special Edition in the cinema and yes, still in its 3D glory, actually it’s exclusively in 3D sorry 2D only cinemas, looks like you’ll have to miss out on this one.

The question on everyone’s lips though, is even if the film does have that extra 8 minutes of footage and we do get to see that little bit more of Pandora, is it worth the money to spend 170 minutes on some cinema seats to see the majority of a film that you have already seen?

For those that haven’t seen the original cut of the film yet in 3D the answer is probably, yes. To those that have already seen the film, maybe no, but to the fans of the movie, such as myself the answer is a 100%, yes!

I do like Avatar, my God, I’ve seen it that many times and all in 3D and the chance to see a little more of Pandora and perhaps the hope of opening up the characters a tad more with 8 minutes of extra footage, does intrigue me, plus the fact that my local cinema @ScalaPrestatyn will be showing the Special Edition just entices me more to see it again.

So if you have seen Avatar 3D already, will you go and see Avatar: Special Edition?

And just to whet your appetite a bit more I’m leaving you with the trailer for the Special Edition, it’s short, but enjoy

So after last weeks fiasco of the couple before us getting the last tickets, I finally got to go and see “The Final Destination 3D” last night, so, was it worth the wait?

The film which is the fourth in the series and oddly enough the second 3D film, though the 3rd film used those awful blue and red 3D glasses!

This time we are given the full 3D treatment with the new cinema system of Real-3D and it’s really good, everything that should be coming out at you does, from the massive car pile up at the beginning to blood spatters and more…

Though some parts of the film are a bit over the top and gory, but it wouldn’t be a Final Destination movie then would it

So long story short! The film follows in its predecessors foot steps, a group of people cheat death and then are picked off in gruesome ways, one by one.

Now the problem I had with this film is it just seems to be so predictable, but don’t let that put you off, the gore and the 3D certainly make up for it, why anyone was going to see the 2D version in the next screen, I will just never know, there are parts of the film that are blatant 3D such as the main character pushing a burning stick up towards the camera to set off a water sprinkler, kind of reminded me of the scene in Friday the 13th 3D when the woman was hanging the washing out and pushing the clothes prop into the camera!

I do remember seeing the other three movies in the cinema and people laughing and also cringing at some of the gore etc, but in this one there wasn’t much going on with the cinema goers, they mostly seemed to just sit there and take it in their strides. Maybe people are used to gore these days or they were just amazed by the 3D.

But I did enjoy the film, it’s nice to see a film that doesn’t try to go over the top with the 3D too much and push it in your face all the time, excuse the pun!

So if you want to see a good 3D film and you enjoyed the previous Final Destinations then this is certainly for you.

My final rating for The Final Destination 3D is 3.5 out of 5.

Ok everyone it’s a bit of madness time now, my little bear has never been named

At the moment he is preparing to go to the cinema to see Final Destination 3D and is already wearing those amazing 3D shades ready to go.

But it’s no good going out without a name, so I’m asking everyone to give him a name, simples (damn that comparethemeerkat how did he get in here!) So leave a name for bear and then when there is a good choice I’ll post again with a poll of the top 10 names and then we can all have fun voting for his new name.

After which I will be taking bear on some adventures and posting what he’s up to, yes it is crazy, but what can I say, “I’m a crazy girl”

So what are you waiting for… They may even be a little prize in it for the chosen name

UPDATE: This post is now closed and the competition for a chosen name can be found at “It’s Voting Time for Bears Name”
