The meteoric rise of the iPad from the sceptically received ‘oversized iPhone’ of 2010 to class-leading, culture-altering tablet of today has been quite an experience. Apple has recently launched the third generation of its iPad family, but can the new addition live up to the unavoidable hype or is it a flash in the pan that does little to help the range progress?

Hardware

The single most important asset of the new iPad is its Retina Display, which still measures 9.7 inches across the diagonal but manages to pack in twice as many pixels to deliver a resolution of 2048×1536. All of this extra detail means that the graphics and imagery on the screen look crisper and clearer than ever, instantly rendering the outgoing iPad 2 obsolete in the visual department.

Apple has also ensured that the new iPad cuts the mustard when it comes to processing power, as the new A5X dual-core processor is said to offer graphical grunt which can outdo the quad-core chips such as the Nvidia Tegra 3 which have begun to emerge on rival tablet devices.

The final hardware improvement worth noting is the inclusion of a five-megapixel camera on the rear which can shoot full HD 1080p video as well as standard still photos. Given the artistic leaning of many iPad owners, along with the availability of innumerable photography programs on the App Store, this could be another selling point to add to the list of positive aspects.

Software

The iOS platform, which has been updated for the new iPad, remains as user friendly and approachable as ever, although the real attraction is still the huge, ever-expanding library of applications which can be downloaded to the tablet. Sadly, the Retina Display which makes Apple’s tablet great for integration into iPad kiosk set-ups is actually something of a problem when it comes to software, because it means that apps need to be far larger in order to accommodate higher-resolution textures and detail. The knock-on effect is that entry-level iPads with 16GB of storage space are less appealing because there will be a reduced amount of room available due to the oversized chunks of software that must now be downloaded.

Design

The new iPad is still as aesthetically appealing as its predecessors, in line with Apple’s famous attention to detail when it comes to design. The base models are also roughly the same weight, although as soon as you add 3G/4G connectivity to the set of features the heft of the tablet starts to creep upwards.

The main issue with the new iPad’s design, which may put off some people, is the fact that it is actually marginally thicker than last year’s iPad 2. This extra thickness has presumably been caused by the new LED backlighting array which is necessary to bring the Retina Display to life, but it represents a rare step backwards for Apple, which is a company more typically associated with constant forward momentum.

Price

Apple has managed to keep the new iPad’s price structure in line with the cost of the previous generation, but from some viewpoints it is still a little too expensive to recommend wholeheartedly. When you can get a laptop computer with a larger screen, more power and a greater degree of functionality for less than the cost of a bog-standard iPad, the Apple option becomes more difficult to justify.

Whatever you think of the new iPad, it is sure to please Apple aficionados while continuing to drive the tablet market forwards as rivals attempt to steal some of its thunder.

In fall of 2011, one of the world’s greatest visionaries and the great mind behind Apple’s innovative creations, Steve Jobs, passed away due to pancreatic cancer. And since Jobs led such a high profile life, people around the world wanted to know his life story, from his struggles to the success he has achieved during his time on earth. It wasn’t months later that Apple News released a statement to the press about the upcoming Steve Jobs biopic that they were working on. Since then, rumors and speculations have arisen in voluminous amounts flooding the online world. Who will play Steve Jobs? Who are the other characters in the movie? When will it be released? Who is set to produce the film? These are only some of the questions that arose when Apple News did their press release.

Steve Jobs’ Life and Impact On Modern Technology

Almost all people know who Jobs is and what he contributed to our world, from his personal computer revolution to Apple’s bestselling gadgets, such as the iPhone and iPad. Without Steve Jobs and his brilliant and world-changing ideas, we wouldn’t have personal computers as advanced today or mouse-driven graphic user interface that has led to the invention of the Apple Lisa. However, Steve Jobs wasn’t only known for his brilliant work in Apple. His past careers included creating NeXT computer after a power struggle with Apple and working with Pixar and Disney for a couple of years. These are only some of the things that make Jobs’ life so interesting and intriguing that a film about his life story was in order.

Aaron Sorkin Slotted to Write the Script

After the speculations that Jobs’ life story would be turned into a movie, Sony immediately swept off the rights in working in this project. And guess who’s the top pick to write the screenplay? Aaron Sorkin, who is known for his screenplay work in A Few Good Men, The West Wing and his most recent, The Social Network. Apparently, this particular project will be a film that Sony would want on the fast lane. However, as reported by Cinema blend and E!Online, the screenplay director stated, “Right now I’m just in the thinking-about-it-stages. It’s a really big movie and it’s going to be a great movie no matter who writes it.” Though the statement is quite logical and true, not everyone would be able to pull off portraying Jobs’ life. Whichever the case may be, this upcoming biopic is definitely a promising one, given that it is managed by the right hands.

Who Will Star?

Another rumor flooding the streets is that George Clooney and Noah Wyle are battling it out to play the part of Steve Jobs. The rumor and question of whom will be a better star to play the part of Jobs has been addressed by mixed reviews and opinions. For Noah Wyle, his experience in playing as Steve Jobs in Pirates of Silicon Valley was rated as sort of good. Moreover, Noah looks somewhat similar to the late Steve Jobs, making him one of the top choices for the role. On the other hand, George Clooney is by nature a really good actor. However, his face is less identical with Jobs’. Depending on the right writer, director, cast and crew, it may be a film that will go down in history, since Jobs is a figure unparalleled in the modern world.

Fran Delaney follows all sort of Apple news, and writes product reviews on technology and gadgets.

The Chinese company In Icons reports it is going to make available an unauthorized replica of Jobs (starting in February), who passed away back October from complications of pancreatic cancer.

The foot-tall figurine will reportedly show Jobs with his signature black turtleneck, rimless glasses and jeans, along with a stool and a backdrop stating “One More Thing…” – a reference to the trademark slogan Jobs used to release his latest technology gadgets at carefully orchestrated press events where he unveiled the Macintosh computer, the iPhone, the iPad and other “insanely great” items.

Now, the big sticking point will be whether or not the figure ever sees the light of day around the globe.

In 2010, Apple was successful in blocking retailer MIC Gadget from publicly selling its planned iPhone 4-sized Steve Jobs sculptures.

According to reports, lawyers for Apple are not exactly thrilled at In Icon’s plans to construct and market Jobs in his afterlife. Apple lawyers reportedly stated that “Mr. Jobs has not consented to the use of his name and/or image in the product.” If he does consent anytime soon, that will be an even bigger scoop.

A Digital Trends report notes that In Icons had planned a full suite of accompaniments to go with the Jobs figurine, including a pair of apples. The pictured miniature Mac, iPhone and iPad are reportedly not to accompany the figure, which is reportedly going to cost around $100.

So, do you consider this a tribute to the late Apple icon, a man who was reportedly worth approximately $8.3 billion at the time of his death, or a move to cash in on his name while his passing is still fresh in many minds?

Steve Jobs certainly had the last laugh when it comes to flash as Adobe announced yesterday that they will adopt HTML 5 instead of Flash. The move was forced by the popularity of Apple tablets and smartphones which don’t support flash.

The decision by Adobe ends a long battle between the software company and Apple over the cross browser plugin, Adobe will no longer develop flash for mobile browsers instead focusing on HTML 5. Which provides much of the same functionality as flash including the support for the latest multimedia such as video’s.

Questions are now also being asked over the future of Flash on desktop PC’s. Flash has been known to cause security issues for PC users which would not be as much of an issue with HTML 5. Apple are not the only company to choose HTML 5 over flash with Microsoft choosing to remove Flash from their upcoming Windows 8 Operating System. Apple have not included flash on any of their devices since the iPhone launched in 2007.

Despite Adobe deciding to focus their efforts on HTML 5 they still estimate around 200 million devices will be using flash by the end of 2011 a statistic that cannot be ignored. Adobe will continue to support flash for Android tablets and smartphones as well as for the BlackBerry PlayBook. The decision by Adobe seems to be financially motivated as the design software giant plans to lay off 750 staff across North America and Europe in an attempt to meet revenue targets for Q4.

Since flash will no longer be supported and HTML is still under development it does beg the question of what will be used in the interim? Adobe offered little advice to apps developers on what the next steps will be. It also begs the question will app development and web development suffer in the short term as developers get up to speed with HTML 5?

What is HTML 5?

HTML 5 is the fifth revision of the HTML standard its core objectives are to improve browser support for the latest multimedia while at the same time keeping the language readable by humans and search engines.

HTML 5 includes several new syntactical features most noticeably the <video>, <header> and <canvas> tags making it easier to display multimedia and graphical content without the use of plugins and API’s. Not only will this make development easier it will also help search engines in crawling the web making it more open and free for everyone.

The only question left to answer is whether Adobe will scrap Flash all together and choose HTML 5 as the standard for desktops PC’s as well.

James Robinson is a Technology and IT writer with a strong interest in the latest industry developments especially software and Cloud Computing.

Many people blame smart phones for a loss in productivity, thinking that people are wasting time downloading apps and playing games. But for those who would like to increase their productivity, a selection of productivity apps are now available for iPhone and Android, helping people make better use of their valuable time, whether they work in business, administration or computer networking careers. Here’s a look at six of the best:

1. Expensify

Trying to keep track of receipts of business expenditures can be a real headache. They take up space in wallets and purses and are easily lost. Plus, the hassle of filing and tracking them uses up a lot of time. Expensify allows you to snap a picture of your receipt with your phone’s camera and then keeps it in a file. Additional features to save you time include filing expense reports, linking credit cards and tracking mileage.

2. ALOQA

If your job requires you to frequently head out of town, this is a must-have app. The app determines your location via GPS and can then suggest the best local events, stores, restaurants and other information you might need to “always be local.”

3. Box.net

More and more companies are sending and storing files using services like Dropbox and SugarSync. Box.net has an exceptional amount of storage space compared to the other services — 50 GB, compared to DropBox’s 2 GB and SugarSync’s 5 GB, ideal for sending and storing many large documents. Spending $15 per month gives iPhone and iPad users access to this incredible amount of space in the cloud and provides features that allow you to synchronize, view and collaborate your files.

4. Evernote

Find yourself sitting in many meetings? Meetings can be a huge drag on productivity and trying to compile your notes with your recordings later can be a major time waster. Evernote helps you take notes and puts them together with your voice recordings, web pages, pictures and anything else from the meeting for easier review and documentation later. Even better, you can access your notes and data from just about any location, using your mobile device or your desktop.

5. Remember the Milk

Despite its goofy name, this app is invaluable for helping you organize and prioritize your day. The days of written datebooks are long gone and few apps have truly been useful for planning and tracking the details of a project. This app is a single place to create the project, record the details, prioritize the steps, schedule your day and track the project through to its completion. The app works with a wide array of available systems, including iPad, iPhone, Android, Blackberry, Outlook and Gmail.

6. eWallet

Most people know they should have different passwords for different accounts, but the reality of trying to remember all of them can be a headache. eWallet stores all your account information safely, encrypted and secure. It also stores your credit card and bank information so you don’t have to worry about it or try to remember your notes and hints to yourself. Since more and more financial services are becoming available through smart phones, this app is going to be even more of a time saver in the future.

Technology-Colleges.info helps students seeking the best technology schools research colleges, programs and careers that might interest them.

Unfortunately, that doesn’t appear to be the case.

Jobs, who went public a while back that he had been battling pancreatic cancer, showed up on the celebrity Web site TMZ in two photos looking gaunt, pale and sickly.

So, the big question is whether or not the photos are authentic or if they were doctored?

According to TMZ officials, the picture was snapped last Friday by Pacific Coast News (who reportedly sold it exclusively to the celebrity site), some 48 hours after Jobs announced he was stepping down at Apple, stating he had reached that point and time where he could no longer give 100 percent to his position.

An email from a representative at Pacific Coast News that went out to different media outlets claims, “These have not been doctored in anyway, I can assure you, regardless what you may have read online.”

Jobs had prior surgery to remove a tumor after being diagnosed with a rare type of pancreatic cancer eight years ago and had a liver transplant in 2009 in a further effort to prevent the spread of the disease.

While Jobs had the presence of mind to go public with his cancer battle, was he prepared for the rampant speculation that his battle may not be over and that in fact is what led him to turn over the CEO position to Cook?

Whether or not that is the case, readers of TMZ did not waste time in commenting on the reported photos.

“Leave Steve alone @TMZ. You guys are low as you can go. This is what’s called ‘journalism’ these days. Seriously disgusted,” brian-tong tweeted.

Some skeptics of the photos note that one can tell they were doctored due to warping and repasting. The photo also appears to show another man helping Jobs stand up as he looks off in the distance. Again, do we have the real thing or a fake?

Either way, this incident just goes to show you that the life of a celebrity, be they an athlete, politician or a business icon, will play itself out in the media rightly or wrongly.

There has been a lot of speculation over the past year regarding two highly pronounced Apple devices; iPhone verse iPad, and which provides the best bang for your buck. Both the iPhone and the iPad provide very similar characteristics and benefits within a smooth, sleek, handheld design. They also allow usability for web browsing, e-mail correspondence, gaming, music, videos and more.

The real question is, if you’re an Apple lover and currently invested in the iPhone, is it necessary to buy an iPad? Unfortunately, this answer truly depends on how you wish to use the iPad. For some, the iPad and iPhone deem to provide two separate platforms. One is a pocket held device and serves as a phone and the other has replaced daily usage of a laptop.

However, given the profound statistics that over 1.5 million units of the iPad have been sold in a month’s time and is seen as the fastest adopted hardware in history, it’s no surprise that the iPad has several advantages over the iPhone. Some of these advantages include more memory space, higher screen resolution, larger screen, larger keyboard, iBooks and more apps.

Memory

The iPad offers both the configurations as the iPhone 3GS (16GB or 32GB) in addition to 64GB. The iPad also allows users to choose a Wi-Fi only connection or Wi-Fi and 3G connection.

Higher Screen Resolution

The iPhone currently has a screen resolution of 480 x 320. The iPad is fully supported with a 1,024 x 768 pixel resolution, offering greater visual aspects than any prior device.

Larger Screen

The iPad creates the ultimate Apple experience on a larger display area. The iPad has a 9.7 inch touch screen where the iPhone 3GS has a 3.5-inch display.

Larger Keyboard

The keyboard is much larger than the iPhone given the larger screen, making typing easier than ever before. Turing the iPhone 90 degrees from its upright position provides even more keyboard space for the user.

iBooks

iBooks allows users to buy, download, and read eBooks, exclusively on the iPad. Users can browse a library as displayed on a bookshelf, tap a book to open it, flip through pages and bookmark passages. It serves as a single location for reading in a small compact, digital form.

iPad Only Apps

iPad has reached 60,000 to 70,000 applications that aren’t offered on any other platform, making daily tasks a breeze for owners.

Lorna Horne has been an Apple iPhone owner for years and regularly writes articles about the latest Apple technologies for a variety of sites in the blogosphere.

The iPod nano is great for the small collection, but the new 120GB iPod Classic is more for me, it’s boasts that you can fit 30,000 tracks and upto a massive 150 hours of video, but you have to take into consideration that the 30,000 tracks is at a 128kbps and an average of four minutes a track, I know I’ve used 14GB so far that’s with over 250 photos and 2600+ tracks, but some of the track are recorded in 256kbps (which is now what iTunes+ uses) and taking into consideration that some tracks are well over four minutes, such as the classic Yes album Relayer and a collection of Tangerine Dream albums where the tracks are mostly over ten minutes at least.

But I must say that it’s certainly better than having decide what will fit and what is worth leaving on when syncing the iPod, knowing that everything will fit on, I’m just in the process of adding my CD collection as well as CD Single to iTunes now so that I can listen to whatever I want when I’m at work, it’ll be interesting to see how much I can fit on!

The only other thing then is, it’s all very well having 120GB to put your music on, but then you have to make sure that you have enough room on your hard drive for the tracks!

Luckily I have a 30GB hard drive and 25GB hard drive in my computer, the 25 is from my old computer and a 160GB external drive, which is what I use for storing all my files such as photos and music etc. , But I dare say that the day will come when I need to upgrade my 160GB hard drive to something more meaty like a 500GB or maybe a 1TB drive, tasty

Specifications:
