15 Ways To Become A Responsible Blogger

How does it feel to have your own little part of cyberspace, where you can air your thoughts, views and ideas? Doesn’t your blog give you a great opportunity to share, impart learning, learn from others and grow as a person? Sadly, not everyone is using their blogs positively or responsibly. Here are the 10 rules of responsible blogging.

1. Verify Information Before You Post

If the information you’re going to post is not true, of if you’re not sure of its veracity, be honest with your readers about it. The credibility of you as a blogger and that of your blog depends on the integrity of what you publish.

2. Respect People’s Viewpoints

Don’t use your blog to come down heavily on anyone’s viewpoints, be they religious, political, moral or whatever. Allow your blog to be an impartial ground where people can discuss multiple viewpoints but insist on respect.

3. If In Doubt, Wait Before Posting

If you’re not sure about a particular post, wait for at least 24 hours before posting it. Yes, we know, all bloggers undergo pressure to post and stick to a schedule. Check with your friends and network if it’s sensible to post it. If your counselors indicate in the negative, refrain from posting it.

4. Know That You’re Accountable For Your Blog

Always keep in mind that you’re accountable for your blog’s content, how it’s written, data accuracy and the comments as well. Be prepared to take charge of your publishing consequences. Accept mistakes; publish an apology and work to resolve conflicts immediately.

5. Demonstrate Humility While Expressing Your Thoughts

It is impossible to get the whole picture of someone else’s life. Be quick to listen but slow to speak when it comes to expressing your thoughts and opinions on people and their beliefs. You have to especially mind this when you’re blogging about someone with whom you disagree.

6. Know What Not To Blog About

If you’re blogging about yourself, you will become vulnerable and put yourself out there, perhaps not in the best possible light. If your story involves other people, both you and the other party get implicated. Think hard about how open you can be and whether you’re creating trouble for yourself and for others through your blog.

7. Learn The Basics Of Copyright Law

Even if you remove copyrighted content from your blog, the infringement still exists and you’re still accountable. Don’t copy paste content. Always check if content is copyrighted or not (even if there’s no copyright notice). Take the time to learn the basics of Copyright Law

8. Monitor Comments

Attach a comment policy to your comment form; this will help your readers know what kind of comments are welcome. Also don’t publish comments immediately without moderating them.

9. Never Forget To Give Credit

If you’re using referenced material, provide a link to the reference. This is not only ethical, but helps readers read the reference material to get an overall picture. Be sure to credit the authors of articles if you’re using open source software such as WordPress.

10. Include A Disclaimer

If you are employed by an organization, include a disclaimer in your About Us page saying all expressed views are yours. Disclose who your employers or partners are and make sure people understand that none of them are responsible for content disagreements.

11. Be Transparent With Sponsored Posts

Advertisers look for sponsored reviews for extra mileage. They’re a good way for bloggers to earn more money as well. However, you must maintain transparency with your readers when it comes to sponsored posts. Dedicate a page for sponsored posts and outline what your readers should expect from them.

12. Maintain Transparency With Affiliate Links

Readers cannot identify affiliate links that are cloaked. The “link cloaking” technique may get you extra clicks and revenue but it is basically unethical and bad for your blog’s future. You will lose visitors who’ll view your blog as a trap. Create value for the reader and keep your affiliate links transparent.

13. Know And Respect Tax Law

Any money you earn via your blog is taxable. If you’re paying writers anything more than $500 for your blog, you should file a 1099 form. Read up on your tax obligations today and don’t wait till your blog is shut down.

14. Don’t Cheat Social Bookmarking Sites

Don’t try blackhat methods such as cheating search engines by hiding text behind images, buying Diggs and so on. Sooner or later you’ll have to pay a heavy price, as these methods are not sustainable.

15. Test Products Before Promoting Affiliates

Remember that anything you provide on your blog reflects directly on your credibility. When it comes to affiliate marketing, don’t just grab a money spinner. Rather, promote a product you believe in and make sure that your audience gets value out of your efforts.

Are Your Guest Bloggers Getting The WordPress White Screen Of Death?

Now this is something that I’ve seen a time or to and even my Guest Bloggers here on Blazing Minds have had the problem with the dreaded WordPress white screen of death when they have tried to get on to the dashboard to add a guest post.

But is there a way to solve the problem?

The simple answer to that is YES!

There can be many things that cause this to happen, it could be plugins needing an update after you have upgraded to the latest version of WordPress.

It can even be a simple matter of memory on your server and 9 times out of 10 this is the main cause of the problem.

Most of the time a user will either get the dread WordPress white screen of death or they will get the dashboard appear with an error showing:

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 2323020 bytes) in /wp-includes/class-simplepie.php

But don’t worry there is away around this and it’s really easy to do.

How to fix the memory problem with WordPress

You will need to edit the wp-config.php file in your WordPress installation, so load it in to a text editor.

The first line should be after this line add
define(‘WP_MEMORY_LIMIT’, ’64M’);
This will give your WordPress installation a little more head room than its default setting, so you are doubling the amount.

Save the updated wp-config.php back to your server and hey presto, your guest bloggers should be back to posting.

This also goes the same if you yourself are having problems with your own Admin Dashboard on WordPress.

What could be causing the problem in the first place?

Usually, this is all caused by memory hungry plugins and those that may need updating to be less hungry with your installation, one which I found to be a terrible culprit of this was Capability Manager a plugin which a few WordPress users use when they would like to give a little friendly usage to their guest poster.

I personally found that after disabling this plugin, everything worked and after adding the code above and then re-enabling the plugin, everything seemed fine again.

But, then another problem arose, I could log in, I could even login with another “dummy” user account but sadly @DrRus couldn’t, so after plenty of deliberation and playing around with plugins etc, I narrowed the offending plugin, Lightbox 2, yes it looks nice but it was even causing a Java script error on IE8 and occasionally on FireFox as well. Suffice to say this was removed!!

So if you are having these problems with your WordPress installation, then don’t just sit there in silence, give any of the above a try, and hopefully it will work for you as well

But remember, check your plugins first as one of these, specially ones that have not been updated for use with the latest version of WordPress could be causing annoying problems.

Spreading Yourself Between Blogging, Work, Rest and Play

Now we may all know that blogging can be very time-consuming, what with reading blogs, commenting and writing our own posts, but how can we give everything an equal share of our time?

I go to work during the day and I have to admit that when travelling from one job to another I do Tweet with my Twitter @BlazingMinds and if a blog idea springs to mind I either jot it down or dictate it on my phone for later.

But is there a good way of spreading our time in to the right amount to give everything a chance of getting something done during the day.

Do you spend more time blogging, working or putting your feet up, if your married does your other half give you a set amount of time that you have on “that bloody computer” each night, so you cram in as much as you can before it’s family time?

So putting it simply, how do you fit everything in during the day, do you even get chance to do everything that you want to do?

I personally spilt my day up. Work during the day, grab a few minutes here and there to catch up on my blogging, put my feet up for a bit with a Cappuccino and they maybe tweet a little, before placing my head on a soft cosy pillow to refuel for the following day

Blogging! It’s Not Just About Posting About Website SEO..

I was talking to a friend the other day and we came up on the subject of blogging and their response was “blogs are just about tech, making money and website stuff like SEO etc! What is SEO anyway?”

So after explaining that blogs are much, much more, I decided to knock up a post, for those of you out there in computer land that when they hear the word “blog” it sends shivers down their spines.

OK. Blogs are much more than just for writing about how to make money and how to get loads of hits to your blog to enable you to get more money, yes I know I have been guilty in the past of blogging about SEO ([intlink id="handy-websites-seo-fanatics" type="post"]Search Engine Optimization[/intlink]), but, I don’t bang on about it every single post.

I do have my favourite subjects such as Twitter and it has been a popular subject here on Blazing Minds, but I would personally like to think that my blog has a bit of something for everyone and aren’t really afraid to remove myself from a set niche and go into the world of blogging with an open mind.

Blogging is fun, it’s a chance for the blog owner to vent their thoughts, or on some blogs their darkest secrets, other even use the blog as a way of getting their day-to-day chores off their chest. Some post recipes etc on a daily basis, some of my favourites

When it comes down to it, there are loads of SEO blogs out there and we’ve all probably read them and gleamed as much information from them as possible, but there are so many other blogs out there that deserve that illusion of only been there to make money removed from the thoughts of people who do not understand blogs.

So when someone says to you that blogs are only for one thing, then put them straight, send them to this post and other sites that are not in a set niche of SEO and making money from blogging, they’ll be surprised in what they can find

How to get traffic to your blog

Building a blog is easy, but one of the major challenges every blogger faces is the part of getting traffic to a blog. There are various methods that can be used to get traffic to a blog some of which are explained below.

Post regularly: This is a step most people often ignore. We all know our readers are not fool, you can’t just expect them to be coming to your website or blog everyday without them finding new fresh content to read. Try to update your blog regularly because this helps your readers and it also help your [intlink id="handy-websites-seo-fanatics" type="post"]search engine rankings[/intlink]. Search engines love fresh content and if you begin to post regularly, the search engines will soon begin to count your blog as an authority blog thereby automatically increasing your ranks in the search engines.

Blog commenting: Commenting on other blogs in your niche is also another good strategy to increase the number of visits to your blog. It is important to have an avatar when commenting, the avatar can either be your image or another image related to your blog. The importance of using an avatar is that it makes you look real and human and if you comment on many blogs so many users who read several of those blogs will be forced to visit your blog because they are now becoming familiar with your avatar due to them seeing it every where.

Article sites: Article sites are also a good way to get traffic to your site, all you have to do is write a good post and then submit it to the top article sites with an anchor text of your choice linking back to your website. For example, if you want to rank for the term “young blogger”, your anchor text will look like this “young blogger”, you will notice that if you click on the second link it will take you to my website. That is exactly how an anchor text looks like. It is also important to make sure you put most of your efforts in dofollow sites because it helps you achieve higher search engine rankings.

Directories: Try to submit your blog to various blog directories and website directories; you can also submit your rss feed to rss directories. Directories do help increase website rankings, I was able to take a website to the front page of Google for a two phrase keyword, I was also able to help the website get pagerank 3 using directory submission only. Do not underestimate the power of directory submission and also try to do it gradually i.e. do not submit to 1000 directories in one day, submit your website to some few directories and continue like that.

Guest blogging: As I am doing now, guest blogging is another great way to get traffic to your website. Unlike any other traffic generation strategy, guest blogging helps you get not just ordinary traffic to your blog but valuable traffic because many of the readers on the blog you guest post on will come to have a look on your blog and if you have good and regularly updated articles they will stay around thereby becoming your loyal long-term reader.

Social sites: Social bookmarking and networking sites such as twitter, facebook, digg, stumbleupon and many other social sites can help you drive tons of traffic to your website, just make sure you only submit valuable posts and you don’t just spam their sites. It is not a good idea to spam this sites as this will reduce your reputation with time

Using Music on Your Blog – Carefully

Blogging has come on a long way since its infancy. All bloggers could do back in the day was write a post, give it a title and maybe include a few hyperlinks if they were lucky. Nowadays however there are all sorts of widgets, plugins and extensions to help make the blogging experience a richer one, both for blog owners and their readers. WordPress has undoubtedly had a big part to play in this development, allowing the masses to develop the open source code and customise blogs to suit their needs. The other blogging platforms aren’t too far behind however and their progress is driven by the very human desire to make things better and more engaging.

One such development that many blog owners are taking advantage of these days is music players that they can either embed into their posts or individual pages. A couple of examples of these are the ‘Audio Player’ plugin for WordPress , which can actually be imbedded in any blog if you know a bit of code. Or Groove Shark, which is a customisable widget that will play music on your blog from their own diverse and extensive collection.

Using music on your site can really enhance a visitor’s experience. If you are trying to create an ambiance or have a clear theme on your blog, music can reinforce this. You might also like to showcase your own music on your site so you can get feedback or maybe catch the ear of someone in the industry? What you need to be careful of however is crossing the line between enhancing a users experience and putting them off by forcing your audio choices on them.

It is worth remembering that everyone has different tastes and may not like the music on your blog. Also, these days many people have their own music players open whilst browsing the net and don’t want their songs interrupted by what you think they want to listen to. With this is mind it is rarely a good idea to have music start playing automatically when people arrive on the site, but instead give them the option to turn it on if they so wish.

For example, on this site the music player is closed when people arrive

But if you want to you can open the music player by clicking on the arrow and the song starts to play. In this case it is Michael Jackson’s – Man In The Mirror…classic!

The key is, by all means give your visitors something to listen to when they visit your site and read your posts, but don’t try to force anything down their throats or assume they want to listen to your choice of tunes.

Wow Blazing Minds Has Really Grown!

When I started Blazing Minds it was just a way for me to blog my thoughts etc. But since then the blog has really grown up, it’s now an avenue for Guest Bloggers bringing their wisdom to those that are reading the blog on a daily basis.

So now after over 500 posts, nearly 4,000 comments and several [intlink id="guest-bloggers" type="page"]Guest Bloggers[/intlink] posting on the blog, Blazing Minds has really got to a point where it is something that has done better than I originally hoped for, those that are writing constructive comments have certainly helped and since starting the blog I would like to think my blogging has improved, though I do keep to my style, if I didn’t then it just wouldn’t be me

What started out as something just to post about bizarre things has now taken on the roll of bringing [intlink id="565" type="category"]blogging tips[/intlink], twitter tips, reviews, humour and much more, sometimes I think it’s turned into a technology based blog and then in a matter of days we have new posts that change the genre of the blog again.

I am so proud of Blazing Minds and how it has developed since I started it and to those that Guest Post here, you have helped Blazing Minds improve its visitors and rankings. So then, here’s to many, many more posts, comments and even more mixed bag posts for everyone to enjoy
