How does it feel to have your own little part of cyberspace, where you can air your thoughts, views and ideas? Doesn’t your blog give you a great opportunity to share, impart learning, learn from others and grow as a person? Sadly, not everyone is using their blogs positively or responsibly. Here are the 10 rules of responsible blogging.

1. Verify Information Before You Post

If the information you’re going to post is not true, of if you’re not sure of its veracity, be honest with your readers about it. The credibility of you as a blogger and that of your blog depends on the integrity of what you publish.

2. Respect People’s Viewpoints

Don’t use your blog to come down heavily on anyone’s viewpoints, be they religious, political, moral or whatever. Allow your blog to be an impartial ground where people can discuss multiple viewpoints but insist on respect.

3. If In Doubt, Wait Before Posting

If you’re not sure about a particular post, wait for at least 24 hours before posting it. Yes, we know, all bloggers undergo pressure to post and stick to a schedule. Check with your friends and network if it’s sensible to post it. If your counselors indicate in the negative, refrain from posting it.

4. Know That You’re Accountable For Your Blog

Always keep in mind that you’re accountable for your blog’s content, how it’s written, data accuracy and the comments as well. Be prepared to take charge of your publishing consequences. Accept mistakes; publish an apology and work to resolve conflicts immediately.

5. Demonstrate Humility While Expressing Your Thoughts

It is impossible to get the whole picture of someone else’s life. Be quick to listen but slow to speak when it comes to expressing your thoughts and opinions on people and their beliefs. You have to especially mind this when you’re blogging about someone with whom you disagree.

6. Know What Not To Blog About

If you’re blogging about yourself, you will become vulnerable and put yourself out there, perhaps not in the best possible light. If your story involves other people, both you and the other party get implicated. Think hard about how open you can be and whether you’re creating trouble for yourself and for others through your blog.

7. Learn The Basics Of Copyright Law

Even if you remove copyrighted content from your blog, the infringement still exists and you’re still accountable. Don’t copy paste content. Always check if content is copyrighted or not (even if there’s no copyright notice). Take the time to learn the basics of Copyright Law

8. Monitor Comments

Attach a comment policy to your comment form; this will help your readers know what kind of comments are welcome. Also don’t publish comments immediately without moderating them.

9. Never Forget To Give Credit

If you’re using referenced material, provide a link to the reference. This is not only ethical, but helps readers read the reference material to get an overall picture. Be sure to credit the authors of articles if you’re using open source software such as WordPress.

10. Include A Disclaimer

If you are employed by an organization, include a disclaimer in your About Us page saying all expressed views are yours. Disclose who your employers or partners are and make sure people understand that none of them are responsible for content disagreements.

11. Be Transparent With Sponsored Posts

Advertisers look for sponsored reviews for extra mileage. They’re a good way for bloggers to earn more money as well. However, you must maintain transparency with your readers when it comes to sponsored posts. Dedicate a page for sponsored posts and outline what your readers should expect from them.

12. Maintain Transparency With Affiliate Links

Readers cannot identify affiliate links that are cloaked. The “link cloaking” technique may get you extra clicks and revenue but it is basically unethical and bad for your blog’s future. You will lose visitors who’ll view your blog as a trap. Create value for the reader and keep your affiliate links transparent.

13. Know And Respect Tax Law

Any money you earn via your blog is taxable. If you’re paying writers anything more than $500 for your blog, you should file a 1099 form. Read up on your tax obligations today and don’t wait till your blog is shut down.

14. Don’t Cheat Social Bookmarking Sites

Don’t try blackhat methods such as cheating search engines by hiding text behind images, buying Diggs and so on. Sooner or later you’ll have to pay a heavy price, as these methods are not sustainable.

15. Test Products Before Promoting Affiliates

Remember that anything you provide on your blog reflects directly on your credibility. When it comes to affiliate marketing, don’t just grab a money spinner. Rather, promote a product you believe in and make sure that your audience gets value out of your efforts.

While take up of mobile broadband has been strong on the UK, some people still don’t feel they really have a need for it. But if you’re a blogger, it’s safe to say that if you’re not getting online on the move, you’re probably missing out.

Ways To Get Online

There are two key ways to get yourself online on the move, the most common now being via a smartphone. It’s fair to say that the rise and rise of apps has been a massive boon for bloggers, and not only for the social networking opportunities that constant access to the likes of Twitter brings.

Blog sites have been quick to embrace the technology, with the likes of WordPress, Tumblr and Squarespace having dedicated apps so that you can blog on the go. You can also easily take pretty decent snaps with your smartphone, and then get them online straight away.

Modern Smartphones

But, even more simply, today’s smartphones let you get your ideas down – and even get opinions on them – as you have them. It’s fantastic to be able to just get your notes down and online in one easy move, even if you’re on the bus, in a tent, at a show – whatever you blog about you can blog from the scene.

Of course, going the extra mile and getting a mobile broadband deal offers you even more. While a smartphone slips into your pocket and is the ultimate in convenience, it doesn’t take long to lose patience with a tiny QWERTY or onscreen keyboard. For those of us whose blogs are more like novels, getting a mobile broadband USB dongle or Wi-Fi unit is a more preferable option.

A mobile broadband contract brings the full internet experience to you on the move, via a laptop, netbook, tablet – whichever you choose. It can also act as a fantastic back-up to your home broadband – or even a replacement. Just be sure you study each provider’s coverage checker before you decide on a supplier.

No matter what you blog about, you need to be dedicated, passionate, creative, connected and communicative. There’s no doubt that getting broadband on the move gives a massive boost to all of these traits when it comes to blogging – and for very little outlay. You owe it to your blog to at least look into the options.

Have you ever read an article and half-way through the article you wondered where the blogger was going? Sometimes, the author is back on track by the following paragraph and you mentally think to yourself, “That was weird, but ok” and go on with your reading.

There are times when this technique can be effective, especially with readers that want to figure out why the writer did what they did. And, in some cases the off-topic meanderings won’t impact other readers at all. And, for many of the readers, and especially the “skimmers,” it will just bounce off them, lost in the “skim excess” of unread material in the article.

Now, before I continue, I will make it clear that in my brain, a brain that pops from one thought to another like a monkey jumping branches, I am guilty of at least wanting to get “unfocused,” if not actually getting “unfocused” and off-topic. In my conversations, I interrupt myself to say, “Sidebar” before one of these moments.

Defining the Focus Zone

I watched a YouTube recently about 21 ways to do “xyz.” It was hilarious. However, about five of the suggestions were what I call a “yawn” and about five of them were what I would call “pushes-limits.” Don’t get me wrong, the “yawn” suggestions were okay, and the “pushes-limits” ideas were hilarious! However, with the remaining 10 suggestions fitting in what I would call “edgy” I was left with some confusion as to where they were going with the list. I guess it would be termed as “random entertainment.”

My suggestion for that post would be to make it three different posts, with your “yawn” suggestions in the first, “edgy” in the next day’s post, and finally, the “pushes-limits” as the grand finale. Why? First reason is to avoid confusion on the direction of the content. Ok, but why should I care? Because, the second reason is to create anticipation for the next post. The idea is, “If you think THIS is funny, read my post tomorrow” and so on. Get your readers to come back by “one-upping” yourself, and, at the same time, keeping your content focused.

Breaking the Rules

But, wait, before you become too much of a critic of your own work, make a decision. Like I mentioned above, there may be cases where you can go outside of your focus zone, intentionally. In other words, you may want to “break the rules.” You may want to appear a bit A.D.D. in your content approach. You may want your reader to walk around all day thinking, “What the…” Go for it! Break the rules! Just be sure to understand why you are breaking the rules and what you are accomplishing. By understanding this, it will help you to stay focused on the goal of the content, even if you choose not to have focused content.

So how do you make your blog stand out above the rest?

Blogs are a useful way to share tips and do research, which can be to a targeted to a specific audience. However, with the sheer plethora of information available, knowing which sites and recommendations to trust can prove to be a challenge.

By becoming a trusted source of information which is well researched and interesting then you can encourage your readers to come back time and again. These six top tips will help you add value to any post.

Use Your Own Experience – Personal experience, recommendations and your own critiques will add more substance and depth to any post and will contribute to making it a more interesting and unique read. Furthermore, it will encourage target audiences to read from start to finish. If you regularly follow blogs, why not test a few on a topic you know really well and see if they have accurately reported on it? This is a good way of knowing that you can trust the source. As a blogger, giving consistent and correct detail will give the reader a more fulfilling experience.

Think Different, Think Quirky - Don’t limit yourself to writing about what everybody else is talking about; if you’re doing a travel piece explore extraordinary sites, price rates, directions, unconventional wild and wacky things to do and tips on where the locals hang out. When providing this kind of information, always double check with a reliable source, for example official tourist sites, as personal blogs can easily get outdated. As a blog reader, visit these official sites as an extra precaution.

Write Inclusively – Try and include as many people as possible when making suggestions, as sometimes assumptions can exclude your target groups. For example, when recommending places to eat try and include some vegetarian and vegan places to add variety. This will be much appreciated by these smaller target groups. Similarly, if you’re writing a travel piece, suggest indoor activities for those that do not like hot weather. This principle can nearly always be applied to fit with the theme of your blog.

Be Honest – Your opinion should be honest and always followed by an example. When reviewing something, give constructive criticism and state what you would do differently. Your online reputation counts for a lot with your readers and if you are found to be being dishonest this can seriously damage you and your blog.

Check Dates – As a blog reader, and when researching ideas for your own blog, check the dates when information was provided. Keeping up with the latest news and changes will help your blog be perceived as a reliable source.

Be Comprehensive – Once you have finished writing a blog, check to see if has addressed all the questions you set out to answer. As a blogger, re-read what you have written and see if you have covered off all areas. There will always be something you haven’t thought of, which will invariably arise in the comments section, so don’t be afraid to make edits after posting (just label them as such).

By following these six tips you can add value to your writing and expand your blog’s audience while exploring the subjects you want to.

If you are interested in making social media website work for you, given here are some simple yet extraordinary effective strategies;

1) Ask for response from the clients
You might need to be really tough to digest some of the unflattering comments, but at the same time you will be amazed at the popularity of this technique. Everyone enjoys offering their words of advice or giving suggestions. You need not choose something which is blatantly contentious or an element of your business which is bound to invite a counterattack.

2) Create a Flashy video
A video is not only informative, but is also entertaining. In fact, presenting to your followers a video that is attractive and is precise in pointing out your product or the values of your company is the easiest way to attract their attention. Unlike what people think, it is not rocket science to create a video, a simple video camera with the most necessary functions will also do.
Any important information about your product that is not an obvious marketing gimmick will be accepted by your consumers. For instance, if you were to sell fire extinguishers, a video on how to use one, or one which shows how to identify potential fire hazards around the space or even a humorous one on fire and its repercussions should be admired by the viewers.

3) Host a contest
This is an often used method which always gives way to highly positive results. Many organizations and even individuals have made use of this approach to escalate their fan following on social networking websites. Preferably, like most other promotional techniques for social media, there contests will also throw light upon your business/product/services in some way or the other, try to get obtusely creative.

4) Champion a social cause
Using social causes is another amazing way to show your followers that you are sensitive to the social issues as well, besides just promoting your company. Most corporate have taken initiative to donate funds to Japan, owing to the recent tsunami. Nevertheless, you do not have to wait for a natural disaster to occur; you can select any social cause which strikes a chord with your business venture.

5) Offer something free
This is the oldest trick in the book and it is still mighty effective. Offering free widgets, content, apps etc can be highly instrumental in increasing your fan following on a social networking website. For instance, if you are offering internet marketing products, you can consider giving away a free auto responder or an e-book on a specific subject.

If you want to make it big in your business, experts would say you have to engage in internet marketing strategies. One of the ways to expand your internet business then would be to learn how to blog – and how to blog right.

Blogs – basics

Blogs are different from websites. A website is composed of different web pages. It can be a collection of blogs. A blog is just a part of a website. However, even if it is only a website component, it could give you an edge ahead of your competition. Websites are serious, but blogs are a combination of serious and fun, in one package.

Blogging can come in the form of personal, diary like entries where you have to share your experience. You speak your mind. However, when you do it for business, you have to have better content. You cannot just write about anything that catches your fancy. Most of the time, blogs are done to give out information, to educate.

How do you write good blogs?

Here is a step by step of how to write blogs that count – and fun at the same time.

Plan what kind of blog you are going to make. What is your main theme? When you are going to blog for a living, you have to at least settle that. Try to see what will work and who will read your blog. This way, you are able to fine tune your tone and the object of interest in your blogging later. Be creative. If you are going to blog about the best place to go to, you may add a picture of something that you can find there, or something related to travel. While you are at it, try to redesign the look of your blog. You can choose dark, serious lines. Or opt for fun and exciting designs.

Blog your mind. Blog about updates and keep the information coming. Remember: educate your audience, or keep them entertained. Put a little you in it. Be fun in your blog and try to spring a surprise every now and then.

Attract Traffic. Your article has to be worth reading. So make sure it has good content. That way, you can be sure you’d have an audience.

Before long, blogging will be a second nature to you. Get your computer and try to see what blogging can do for you and your business.

This article is provided by Dave Cooper who writes for http://www.topspeedscan.com, a site, which is seeking ways how to speed up my pc

I’ve visited a few blogs since I started blogging and over the last year my blog has grown in popularity and it’s comments, but the question is:

Is there a right or wrong way to display comments?

For those who are not sure what I mean by displaying your comments on your blog I shall try to explain…

On a [intlink id="blazing-minds-upgraded-wordpress" type="post"]Wordpress[/intlink] set up you have several options for your comments, one is that you can display your comments as the most recent comment at the top of the comments list or most recent at the bottom, another option which is useful for [intlink id="flipping-websites-fun-profit" type="post"]Website SEO[/intlink] is the option to split comments over pages, for example imagine you’ve got 40 comments on one post, imaging how big that page would look! So you can spread the comments over so many pages and does it make a difference in the SEO of your blog and help with the loading time with [intlink id="tips-bloggers-commentators" type="post"]Google[/intlink].

So now it’s over to my readers ….

Do you prefer to have the comments with the latest at the top or the bottom of the comment list?

How many comments per page do you think is just enough?

It will be interesting to see everyone’s responses about this

The other day I posted about if you have a donate button on your blog and the comments have been very interesting, so I thought I would continue on the subject but this time with a different outlook on the debate of Donate Buttons.

So I’m going to ask you all something about the side of donating to Blazing Minds, if I was to give away one of our albums to download to each person that donates a minimum amount of say £2.99 would you be more likely to donate to the blog and support my music project? For example you can currently get one of the Remergence EPs for £2.99 you could get that if you wanted

Yes I know this is probably the same as buying an album, but, with a difference that you could decide on the amount you wish to donate it could be more if you so wish.

Then anyone who donates is actually getting a little something back, anyway, let me know what you all think and if it looks good I will update the donate button to something like “Donate to Blazing Minds and get an album download”

I was happily tweeting away the other day when a tweet came in from @jsinkeywest about the BloggerLuv community, now I’m not one for whoring myself out to these communities and social networks, I am really, so I had to stop by.

Now I like to think that I am a supporter of fellow bloggers and I do try now and again to give a bit of advice and linky love to fellow bloggers, and the BloggerLuv community is one such place that in my humble, if not deranged, opinion is a site that all bloggers should become part of. I’ve not been a member long and I’m only just getting used to what can be done, but it’s one hell of a site!

Not only is there a selection of blog posts posted from a great collection of blogs across the net, but you can upload videos, pictures, get involved in discussions with other like-minded bloggers, it’s sort of like BlogCatalog, but miles better

What does this mean to fellow bloggers, well, it’s going to a place that is run by some like-minded bloggers and is going to be the future, a bit like garlic bread and to those that haven’t a clue what I’m on about and I know there are a few of you out there, take a look for yourselves by visiting BloggerLuv. It’s going to be the hub of the blogging world, the bees knees, the icing on the cake, the be all and end all ….. Ok John have I sold it enough yet, I’m running out of compliments, oh hang on one more ….. It’s WICKED

So though I don’t really want to you stop and go straight away to BloggerLuv I need your love and comments here …. Ok I’ll make the links open in new windows/tabs … So you can pop back and let us all know what you think of the site … Ok I’ll stop now but before I go a tip for everyone …. “Never cross the road until you see the little green man”

…… Damn I’ve drank too much caffeine today

Hi I wanted to Thank Karen for letting write a post about why I always like to add videos to my post. Now right off the bat you may think about increasing your bounce rate and I never really knew or cared about how long someone stays on the site but it does seem like an easy way to increase the time someone is on your site. But what I like about it is maybe I think I haven’t really got my message across or I’m trying to cast a certain mood on the post. Videos let me add one more dimension to my message , it hopefully adds to the emotional impact I’m trying to have people reach.

Sometimes if I’m pumped up I will add a song from youtube that I just heard on the radio, this is cool because you often get to add videos that just came out and people haven’t seen yet . I like vodpod because it’s easy to grab the code off there especially when the song has been blackedout on youtube.

I also recently noticed vodpod gave me my own little video vault . I don’t spend much time on there and all that but Vodpod does have a community on there of mostly young hip music buffs. Karen is down with the music scene so vodpod seems like a great spot to launch a video to get feedback on. Check it out Vodpod ‘s a cool site.

The main point I’m trying to get at is I found adding the right video especially if it’s a song that inspired me to write the post adds some extra flavor and hey if it helps your bounce rate all the better.

Ideally videos that YOU made using camtasia uploaded to youtube with your links in the sidebar then used tubemogul would be better but adding music videos has worked for me so give it a shot Thanks everyone

John Sullivan

PS now this post may seem silly and common sense but the reason I wrote it is because I don’t see many people doing it

Peace

I can hear you asking, what is ebuzzing? Well it’s a platform started in 2007 that brings advertisers and bloggers together and helps bloggers with make a bit of money by posting on their blogs. They do this by, as ebuzzing says, “relaying” campaigns from the advertisers to the readers of their blogs. Bloggers have several ways to monetize their blogs including broadcasting videos and creating content for brands. Ebuzzing is already operating in the UK and they are going to intensify their offer!

So what does this mean to bloggers in the UK, like myself? Well putting it simply, even more options for monetisation of their blogs and help with the funding for running a blog. You can monetise on your blog via video campaigns with a dedicated player, video campaigns using “syndicated players” and banners. All campaigns (player and banner videos, and articles written) are about brands and services that you want to recommend to your readers

If you enjoy something, the majority of the time you will recommend it on your blog, so why shouldn’t you get paid for doing it? By recommending an advertiser on your blog you will get paid and this all adds up to a little bit of extra cash in your pocket. Also doing this sort of sponsored article will show that you have an expertise in the field you are blogging about, and over time you are likely to improve on your blog visits.

Ebuzzing has over 800 advertisers have proposed campaigns to bloggers with the help of ebuzzing such as Coca-Cola, Intel, MTV, L?Oréal, MasterCard, Toyota, Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, eBay, Canon, Diesel, Warner Bros, Philips, and StudioCanal… Though ebuzzing requires the presence of the disclaimer “sponsored post” for all articles, and for the videos the name of the advertiser must be placed so that it is visible to all viewers.

To keep all the search engines happy all articles that are posted must be declared as a Sponsored Post and also all links are nofollow. Also posts must be of good quality and be at least two hundred and fifty words in length.

So what are you waiting for, stop by and register on ebuzzing.com today and start earning money from the blogging that you do.

This is a guest post from Duncan who is an online marketing specialist and keen blogger representing an online vases retailer

There is a very common SEO technique for building links called “blog comment spamming”. This is very different from “blog commenting” and it is important that a distinction be made before we go any further. Blog commenting is taking a genuine interest in the blog post and leaving constructive feedback or questions in the comment section that ‘adds’ something to the post. Blog comment spamming on the other hand involves not evening reading the post in most cases and leaving some truly generic or mindless comment for the sole purpose of gaining a link. Most importantly, blog comment spamming often ‘takes’ something away from the post and in my opinion is not good for SEO for the following reasons.
1.) Power Falls Off Quickly
It would be very hard for me to preach about the flaws in blog comment spamming without having any experience of the technique. So, whilst I’m not particularly proud of the fact, and at the risk of sounding like a hypercritic, I have testing this technique properly. Initially I have seen gains in search engine rankings as a result of doing this, but in my experience there is very little longevity in the power given by such comment links. All the SEO techniques I use are aimed at providing sustainable results and comment spamming cannot provide this. If you are wanting to rank sites using comment spamming you are going to be stepping onto a treadmill that is very hard to get off, because if you stop running you and your site will fall flat on its face.

2.) Bad Public Relations
Despite how clever you think you’re being, spammy comment links stand out a mile and legitimate blog readers hate them as much as the blog owners themselves. You could probably get away with a few spammy links here and there, but once you start committing yourself to more regular spammy activity, you’re in real danger of hurting your credibility. Have a think about it…would your purchase the goods or services of a site that you have seen spamming blogs left, right and centre? Most people wouldn’t, so if you don’t want your brand damaged by cheap link building techniques, you should limit such activities.

Here is an example of blatent comment spam on one of the UK’s most powerful websites
3.) Google Knows
Lots of SEOs claim that Google (and other search engines) cannot tell the difference between spammy comment links and those links that are else ware on the page. I don’t believe this to be true, based largely on the evidence mentioned earlier about comment links losing their power relatively quickly. Additionally, Google is by no means stupid and can identify comment scripts very easily on most blogs. With this in mind, all it takes is for Google to decide they want to seriously de-value all comment links and wham! There goes all your “hard” work.
