Though bounce rates vary wildly based on industry and type of site, news and media sites typically have a bounce rate well north of 50%. This means that those site, which include many bloggers, are watching as over half of their visitors read one page and leave, likely never to return.

Turning one-time visitors in to regular readers and possible customers is a tricky but important art for all websites. It’s crucial for growing a site’s traffic and growing its readership. But convincing hit-and-run visitors to come back is no easy task, especially considering many will visit dozens of sites in a single day and will, at the most, only remember a few.

So how can you get drive-by visitors to come back? Here are five techniques that might make your site a little bit more sticky.

1. Provide Fresh, High-Quality Content

The best thing to keep visitors coming back for more is a regularly updated site that has relevant, high-quality and interesting content that people want to read. Whether it’s niche content only relevant to a small group or something with a much broader appeal, the goal is to find something your target audience wants to read and provide it regularly, ideally multiple times per week.

Along these lines, it’s often best to include posts that are part of a series that pushes someone who is interested to come back sometime in the future.

2. Be Where They Are

Make it easy for people to follow your site by being wherever they are. Offer RSS subscriptions, a Twitter feed, a Facebook page and email newsletter along with anything else that might be relevant. People are much more likely to subscribe if they don’t have to go out of their way and they are more likely to read your work if it’s in a place they already visit..

3. Reward Returning Readers

Offer content that is exclusive to your email newsletter, RSS feed or Facebook pages. Make this content valuable, desirable and free, but only to those who follow your site and keep up with its updates. Generally, people want access to anything that is “exclusive”, especially if they feel it might give them an advantage over competitors.

4. Encourage Reader Participation

Readers are more likely to return to a site they are invested in. Encourage readers to post your site either through guest blogging, comments, a forum or some combination thereof. Once readers have left their mark on your site, they are less likely to forget or ignore your site.

However, even if you don’t want readers posting to your site, you can ask for ideas and suggestions from readers and reward them for the ideas that you accept. This can make them feel like they have a voice in the site, making them much more likely to return.

5. Increase Your Exposure

Even if you do everything right, most of your visitors will likely not come back a second time. The reason is, people rarely remember anything after a first exposure and it takes multiple iterations for something to stick.

As such, focus on getting your site out there. Activities such as linkbuilding, advertising and SEO can get your site in front of your target repeatedly, making it so that they remember and come back repeatedly.

Conclusions

Realistically, you can’t make your site sticky for every single visitor and a good number will always leave and never come back. But if you can capture even a smaller percentage more of those new visitors, it can have a tremendous impact on your site’s growth as the effect snowballs.

This is why it’s important not to focus on perfection, but rather, focus on improvement. Fortunately, or unfortunately, doing better is a goal every webmaster can strive for every day.

Yesterday I posted about the [intlink id="blazing-minds-sudden-boost-website" type="post"]increase in website traffic[/intlink] that my blog had received and how StumbleUpon had helped this increase, but after reading some of the comments made, I decided to see what effect some of the social bookmarking sites had on my blogs bounce rate.

So, I logged into my Google Analytics to find out some information on the referring sites over the past month and to see what was happening with the bounce rates.

Suffice to say I wasn’t really that surprised with the results and as you can see from below, it’s quite obvious that some of the social bookmarking websites have a problem with those that “click and run”

StumbleUpon – Bounce Rate = 91.89%

FaceBook – Bounce Rate = 85.92%

Digg – Bounce Rate = 62.50%

The sites which did surprise me on a lower bounce rate were:

Twitter – Bounce Rate = 60.50%

BlogEngage – Bounce Rate = 53.12%

BloggerLuv – Bounce Rate = 48.08%

Bloggers – Bounce Rate = 55.17%

I now which are the top sites that I’ll be posting my links to in the future

So don’t get caught up in posting to the big networks of social bookmarking websites, it seems that the big sites have a lot of users that just click on a link and move away from it very quickly, where as site such as BlogEngage and BloggerLuv have such a brilliant collection of friendly bloggers that appreciate the effort that goes into blogging that they stop and read for a while and even comment on a few posts in one visit, no need to mention names here as you know who you are

My overall response to all this is join a website like the four mentioned above and take part with other bloggers, it all pays of in the end as some of the other sites may indeed damage your website bounce rate.

Now many users of the EntreCard system have said that is a long time coming, but according to the latest blog post on the EntreCard blog they are to “take action against bounce rates”

So before I get on to this, I’ll just give you a quick bit of info about bounce rates, a Bounce Rate is when a visitor lands on your blog and then leaves straight away without spending time looking around your blog and EntreCard is a terrible culprit for making you have a high percentage on your bounce rates….

So as mentioned by EntreCard they intend to implement a system that will decide if the dropper is a “drop and run” visitor, this is someone who is only there to drop on your ECard and then zip off to another blog, to get in as many drops as they can in the day without even reading your blog, shame on them! As mentioned in the EntreCard Blog:

Up until now, we’ve always allowed the “drop and run” phenomenon to take place. We figured if someone was interesting to the visitor, they’d stop and read, and it was best to let everyone go at their own pace. But now we are taking a slightly different approach, in an ongoing effort to increase the quality of Entrecard traffic across the board.

My problem with the drop and run phenomenon is that you are spending time writing an interesting post only for someone to stop by, drop on the ECard and bugger off! I write these posts not just for me you know but for others to read and show some interest by posting comments, not visit and say, “ok I’ve dropped, I’m off!”

So what will EntreCard be doing about this, well this is what they have said on their official blog:

Starting soon, “dropping and running” will no longer give you credit. We are developing a proprietary algorithm to determine whether or not you engaged in the blog you visitied in some way. If you did not engage in the blog, you will not get credit. We won’t be disclosing exactly the algorithm we use, so that people can’t game it easily.

So it seems that something is been done, but will this cut the amount of view to a blog showing the EntreCard widget? Probably, but isn’t it better to get a few less visits and gain visitors that actually appreciate your blogging, only time will tell when the new system is finally implemented.

Now I have been using EntreCard for a long time now and I must be one of the few “Droppers” that actually visits a site, stays for a while and even leaves a comment if the posts interest me, but the problem is those “Droppers” that speed drop!

The trouble with speed droppers is that they land on your site hit drop and then bugger off! Which is not really good for your blogs bounce rate, ok, I may be sending this right over people heads right now, so I would recommend reading the Wiki about Bounce Rate to find out what it is, but to cut a story short, bounce rate is the amount of time a visitor stays on your blog before moving onto another site etc.

The aim is for you to try to analyze and reduce your Bounce rate, but with EntreCard dropping this is a hard task, due to the problem with speed droppers, there is not much you can do about the EntreCard droppers that just drop and run, but there are ways to improve Bouce Rate with other visitors, so it’s a matter of a little work to get a better Bounce Rate for your blog.

So the question is will a bad Bounce Rate affect your Google search ranking etc? Well some say yes and some say no, so I’m too sure myself, but it is a thought that you have to take with you when blogging or even building your home page on your website, will the content cause your viewer to stay or just shoot straight to another website, before giving you blog/site a chance.

I personally am considering the thoughts that EntreCard is damaging my Bouce Rate and overall search engine rankings, but then again, it helps my Google Advertising with hits etc, so I’m 50/50 at the moment, it’s a “time will tell” situation, so I think I may wait to see how the next Google Page Rank goes and how the searches are coming in before I do anything major..
