Are you an environment conscious individual, who is constantly looking for ways to make a positive change in whatever little way possible? Or are you somebody who wants to make a change but doesn’t know where to start from? Here is your chance to learn a few tips to make green living a part of your life.

1. Sustainable eating

Sustainable eating might sound like a hard and complicated term at first but it really isn’t. The most important thing you have to remember is when shopping in a supermarket, avoid the middle aisles. The side aisles always contain what you are looking for: whole foods and ingredients that allow you to cook healthy meals from scratch. You should only consider visiting the middle aisles when looking for cleaning supplies, organic soaps, detergents and shampoos and other green products. Also remember that producing meat is damaging to the environment just like consuming it is damaging to your health, so try to stay clear of it and adopt a plant based diet.

2. Use non-toxic chemicals for cleaning

Non-toxic cleaning chemicals have plenty of advantages over the nasty chemical loaded cleaners that always make your nose each or your eyes tear. For once they are just as effective and as cheap as their toxic counterparts. You will also love that they are friendly both to the environment, your water ways and your skin as well. It might take you a while to get used to them but once you start giving them a chance non-toxic chemicals will be the only ones you use.

3. Consume less, create less waste

Not all items are worth the storage space in your house, not to mention the money you pay for them. One good process to go through when seeing something you like in the supermarket is to just walk away from the item for a few minutes and afterwards ask yourself if you really need that item. If your answer is yes, sleep on it for a day and ask yourself that question again. If the answer is still yes then you can feel safe with your decision and buy it.

4. Eliminate baths and take shorter showers

Studies show that having a bath can consume as much as twice the water consumed during a shower so the recommendation is that you stop taking baths altogether. Once you’ve given up taking a bath you could also consider reducing the time you spend showering by a few minutes because even one extra minute in the shower is five gallons of wasted water.

5. Cut down on driving

Some trips can’t be avoided but others can be unnecessary or easily completed on foot or with a bike, but the fact is that you are too dependent on the car as the main mode of transportation. If you want to benefit both the environment and your health, then try walking or taking a bike to the local shop or cinema.

6. Save electricity, money and the environment with your washing machine

A good way to live a green lifestyle and also save some money is to use the washing machine with a 30°C or 40°C washing cycle instead of the regular 60°C. Don’t think your clothes will be dirtier, most washing powders are just as good at the lower temperatures. Be sure to only run the washing machine or even dishwasher when you have a full load and you will waste less power and water.

It’s time to slap on the sun lotion as soon as you can if your living or visiting our little island this week as we prepare for a heatwave to hit the country.

It’s been forecasted that this week could break all the records over the years with temperatures hitting 30°C (86°F) in the middle of the week, which would make it the hottest spell for years!

But despite all this the forecasters have also said that this will not be a solid wall of sunshine as it will be broken up by the odd thundery downpours, it will also feel humid and the pollen counts will rise, which is just what us hay fever sufferers need!

The Bookmakers Ladbrokes is offering odds of 8/1 that Wales beats its top temperature of 35.2C, and 17/2 that Scotland tops 32.9C or Northern Ireland exceeds 30.8C.

Ladbrokes have also set 13/2 that the top temperature midweek will hit 32°C (91.4°F).

I know that our back garden here in North Wales has hit 29.4°C (84.9°F) which has felt a little cooler by a nice coastal breeze, but it’s still hot and it’s lovely, but have we got this hot spell for a short time, will it disappear next week and return to rain, rain and more rain. We will se but I’m personally hoping for a good run of warm weather, yes the odd shower would be nice to cool everything down at night, but the warm spell would perfect for BBQs and garden lounging

This morning we had a letter from the local council with regards to “Notice of Application for Planning Permission”

My first thought was “I wonder which one of our neighbours is planning to build now!”, but after further reading of the letter it turns out to be planning permission to the council from the council on operating collection of food waste and bulking!

So it seems that we will be getting the council giving us little bins or something similar for us to recycle our food waste, now no longer will we be throwing food in the normal bin, but now into a recycle bin.

That means we will have the normal wheelie bin, a bin for glass and tin, a bag for paper and a bin for waste food! You may of noticed no bin for plastics, no, in the councils wisdom, food waste is more important than recycling plastic, yeah right!

Technorati Tags: recycling, Environment, food, recycle

I was just reading about the fires in Australia and it now seems that the Police have mounted a huge manhunt for the arsonists that started the wildfires and believe that the wildfires may of killed in the region of 300 people and destroyed around 1,000 homes.

The Australian police have already arrested and charged a 31 year old man and a 15 year old boy with starting fires in New South Wales and thankfully no deaths have been reported, so far.

It makes you wonder what is going through the minds of those that started the fires, are they laughing at what they have done or are they feeling some remorse, maybe we will know more when or if the police capture these idiots.

As you can see by the picture this is the nice little walk that we took, it’s look nice and clean and calming.

A very relaxing walk with the two dogs watching them playing around and having fun.

But I was quite upset in how people treat the countryside around them, amongst a closer look there were bottles, old cans of lager and to my utter show a tent that someone had decided to just throw away in the hedge!

Come on people what is wrong with you, can’t you just take your rubbish home with you or even recycle your old stuff.

It really ticks me off when people have no care for their surroundings or the environment and the animals in, so please take your rubbish home!!!!

On a nicer note, on the walk we met a man looking for owls to photograph and it turns out he’s one of our local artists, his name was Martin Jones and you can find some of his artwork and photographs on his website called Annzart, so please find the time to visit his website.

In it’s hayday, Rhyl was the wonder of North Wales with it’s family run Funfair which has been removed for complex of flats that have not been built, outside pool, donkey rides and much more. But as you can see from the picture that I took the other day, things are not looking good for Rhyl.

I remember when the Children’s Village was first built and this was original a lovely blue fountain that rose up from the underground carpark under the village and it was very nice, but now look at it!

Not much else can be said for Rhyl, ok they are improving the coast road, but with flats and apartments, the arcades are in need of a good lick of paint and things need to be cleaned up considerably.

It is such a shame that things are going this way, but I suppose it’s the way things are.

I will be posting some more photos soon, my batteries died with shock at the above picture, so keep your eyes peeled for some more photos, some of the good looking things that can be found in Rhyl and it’s surrounding villages and some of the bad!

A few weeks ago we received some free e-on energy light bulbs in the post and in the box was a card for a free Desktop Computer Intelliplug, so without further a do, I filled in the card and posted it back, it was free after all.

Yesterday it arrived in the post, so I unpacked it and plugged it in!

You plug your computer in to the top (master socket) and your peripherals into the remaining sockets, you can even plug in extension leads for your devices, after turning it on at the all my printer, modem, external hard drive, monitor etc had no power going to them whatsoever, but, five seconds after turning on my computer, all the devices plugged in to the extension lead powered up and everything ran smoothly.

Now this is great, but even better is when you power down your computer after a few seconds all the devices power down and are switched off, great, now I can go out leave the computer on running a virus scan and then when the scan is complete and the computer powers down and turns off, so does everything else and I don’t have to wait for the computer to power down and then turn everything off manually it’s all done for me, brilliant.

I highly recommend one of these devices for everyone, check out the OneClick website for more energy saving devices..
