I’m not usually one for going to see remakes, or reboots as Hollywood likes to call them, but after seeing the 3D trailer for Fright Night I was itching to see the movie.

As luck would have it I was one of the lucky ones to win some free tickets for a preview showing of the movie on Monday night at the @ApolloCinemas in Rhyl, well before it’s UK release on Friday, yes folks I do seem to be going there a lot lately

With memories of the original with the late great Roddy McDowell, it was going to be a case of forgetting about the original and take this new version as the only one you’ve seen, otherwise I would have been constantly comparing the two versions.

Anyway On To The Review Of Fright Night

The first thing I have to say is that Colin Farrell is ideal for the part as “Gerry The Vampire” with his wild look and the crazed madness that he brings to the role.

The story is really simple for the film, Vampire moves in next door and young school kid discovers he’s a vampire, then it’s a case of boy vs vampire with a little bit of help from Peter Vincent (David Tennant), an illusionist with a love for the theatrics.

There aren’t really any frights in the movie, but there are some funny one liners, which certainly tickled my funny bone, most of which seem to come from David Tennant.

How’s The 3D In Fright Night?

Actually it was pretty good, nothing to over the top, meaning those types of scenes that blatantly shove things in your face. Things that really caught my eye, no pun intended, were stuff like blood spatter, burning vampire embers and the effect of foreground and background objects. But overall pretty good, making the 3D an enjoyable part of the film.

Ok Tell Us Your Rating For Fright Night

It and enjoyable film to watch, a bit slow in parts, but once it got rolling, I really enjoyed the movie, specially the cameo of the original vampire (Chris Sarandon) from the original Fright Night back in the 80′s.

So I’m giving Fright Night 3D 7.5/10

Akira has to be one of those ground breaking movies that even after all these years since it first came out still has the power to excite and delight the watcher.

Discovering Akira

I first saw Akira many years ago in the cinema, with subtitles and with its original Japanese soundtrack, for me it was a pivotal moment in my movie going experience.

Not only was it an animated movie, but it was one with an adult rating, which intrigued me and I wasn’t disappointed with it at all. Those days of “cartoons” were going to be left behind as I had discovered the world of “Manga“.

Disney Smishney!

Right from the very start I was gripped by the action and amazing animation of Akira, its powerful storyline and characters that you could actually sympathise with throughout the movie, but also watching the movie in its subtitled version brought a whole new outlook on my movie going experience.

Later I would grow to love and watch many more movies such as “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” and “Night Watch” in their native tongue.

Animation Is Not Just For Kids

There are those that mock the animated movies and some instantly say “Oh it’s a cartoon, aren’t those for children”, which really annoys me, it’s only another medium for film making after all.

And today, I still enjoy Akira and having a remastered version on DVD with its crystal clear picture and sound and several different versions just makes it even more enjoyable. I suppose you could say that Akira is a “Modern Classic” and that’s one of the reasons I chose it for the Classic Film Friday movie.

Taking Akira And Destroying It!

Bit a heading that isn’t? There was a rumour sometime back Hollywood in their unknown wisdom was going to take Akira and totally destroy it with a live action version!

For me and probably everyone that adores Akira were mortified by this.

But thankfully in July this year a post was posted up on the io9 website titled “One Reason to be Glad the Live-Action Akira Movie is Dead“, so thank goodness that that’s one classic movie that has been saved from the Hollywood Re-Booters!

Now I’m not really against games been made in to movies, well some of them I am! But, there comes a time when we must say to Hollywood “NO!” and this is one of those times.

Shadow of the Colossus is a truly visual PlayStation 2 game, ok so maybe there is not too much to it, the idea is to ride your horse around the mythical land, find the different Colossi and kill them, which is no easy task as the creature are huge and I mean huge.

But honestly how can you turn this game into a film, there is one character killing the creatures, would you sit through a film for 90 mins. to 2 hours with a guy firing arrows at giants, climbing up them and then killing them?

Supposedly the script will make some major changes to make the film more action packed and interesting, but surely if this is done then it takes away the spirit of the games haunting feel with it’s melancholy music and peaceful landscapes.

I personally thought this was a wind up from one of my friends until they pointed me in the direction of The Hollywood Reporter’s Risky Biz Blog with info on the film. So what next a movie version of The Sims, or even Pacman (or have they done that already ) I mean it’s bad enough that Hollywood has ran out of ideas in making movies and has to re-imagine/re-make some of the classic movies, but to keep making video game movies, I suppose one good thing of this Shadow of the Colossus movie is, so far the name Uwe Boll hasn’t spung up

It seems to be a trend at the moment in Hollywood that they are remaking, or as they like to call it reimagining, films of which some shouldn’t be touched either because they were that bad in the first place and have now got a cult status or they think they can make them better.

Amongst the latest films to fall victim of this Hollywood trend are The Neverending Story and Total Recall, ok so some will disagree with me on this one, but The Neverending Story is a classic with it’s puppetry, yes I know there is a quite a bit missing from the original book, but is that any excuse to remake it, also Total Recall, probably and I say this loosely, Arnie’s best film…

But it doesn’t stop there, oh no, in there money making wisdom announcements have been made for a “reworking” of The Karate Kid staring Jackie Chan, Arthur with Russel Brand and Romancing the Stone.

I could go on, but I think it would be fun for my readers to comment with films tat they have heard are to be ripped off, sorry remade, err no reimagined!!!

This is my call to the Hollywood writers to come out with an original film, yes I know it may be hard to do as most of the original movie well is drying up, but surely someone can come up with something fresh and not re-pulped…
