The latest version of the web standard markup, HTML 5, was been greeted with a mixed reaction on it’s launch, but has gained grudging acceptance in the past year or so despite being an unfinished project. It’s aim to integrate multimedia functions is gaining traction, mainly due to people’s dislike of Flash. Apple has done its part to help this along through its ongoing fallout with Adobe, making sure that Flash is not supported in any of its new products.

What HTML5 has undoubtedly done is to provide some amazing browser based experiments, to show what’s really possible without flash. What practical use they have is yet to be seen, but it puts it out there for people to explore and play around with. There are already some amazing canvas experiments, here are some of the best and other interesting HTML5 sites:

HTML5 Versions
- Angry Birds – chrome.angrybirds.com
The world-beatingly popular iPhone game has been released on just about every other platform to date, so why not a HTML5 version. Work will never be boring again when you can secretly be playing Angry Birds…

- YouTube – youtube.com/html5
Want to use YouTube on your iPhone or iPad? YouTube now offer an HTML5 only version, so you can watch all the normal offerings they have without the aid of Flash. You have to opt in on the page above, but that’s it, click it and you’re off.

Games
- Agent 8Ball – agent8ball.com
In a slant on the classic pool game, this has been combined with a very thin secret agent twist. Pot all the balls within the time limit to move to the next level, and with intuitive mouse controls it’s actually really good fun! The graphics are great, and all in all it’s a very impressive bit of HTML5 design.

- Manic Spaceman – 8weekgame.shawson.co.uk/manicspaceman
If you’re more of a platform gamer then you’ll love this. Manic Spaceman was an experiment by a devoted fan with a love of coding, who set out to build his own browser game. The result was this game, which was one of the earliest developed with the new code. It suffers a little, but is very addictive and great fun.

- Hakim.se Breakout – hakim.se/experiments/html5/breakdom
Hakim is a site that specialises in HTML5 experiments, and they have a whole host of excellent stuff. Amongst it is a new take on the classic ‘Breakout’ game where you use your paddle to bounce the ball and break the blocks. This one has been replaced by different types of check boxes, appropriate for a web version we think.

- Google Pacman – www.google.com/pacman
Many people will have seen this famous ‘Google Doodle’ that appeared on the front page in May this year. It’s a clever bit of coding that mimicked the arcade classic of the late 70′s, and was fully playable. It’s still available in the archives of Google on the URL above so go and have a play!

Music
- Arcade Fire, Wilderness Downtown – thewildernessdowntown.com
To complement the release of their new track, ‘We Used To Wait’, Arcade Fire teamed up with artist Chris Milk to make an interactive music video. When you input your childhood address, Google Streetview takes pictures from your hometown and creates a personalised video experience which unfolds in several windows. This creates a wonderful complimentary experience to a great track.

- Drum Kit – randomthink.net/labs/html5drums
Instead of buying the real thing, why not simply practice on a virtual version of the classic drum pad. With lots of different sounds, beats and a loop feature it’s actually a lot of fun.

Other Interesting
- Art Of Stars – nakshart.com
Have you ever wondered what constellations are above you in the night sky? Now you can pan around and discover where Ursa Major, Orion, Saturn and hundreds of other stars or constellations will be located at any time of the year, all through the medium of HTML5. It is also a great way to discover the nexus between stars, and you can begin to discover how they were originally named.

- SketchPad – mugtug.com/sketchpad
Based on the HTML5 ‘canvas’, this is an advanced drawing app that gives a lot of different functionality and some Photoshop-esque features and tools. I’m not entirely sure it’s that useful with the likes of GIMP around, but if you need to do a very quick drawing it’s certainly a viable option.

- Spiderman CSS3 animation – optimum7.com/css3-man
This has now become something of an early benchmark for what can be done with CSS3, and has been blogged around a lot. It’s a fairly basic Spiderman animation, but the impressive thing is that it’s done purely with CSS3.

- Hakim.se Animated 404 Page – hakim.se/experiments/html5/404/netmag.html
An excellent idea from Hakim labs again, an animated 404 error page. Upon entering an incorrect URL the screen blacks out and eyes slowly appear, then wink at you. A little unnerving, but a fun take on the much designed 404 page.

So Many Avenues – So Little Time

When it comes to truly making social media work, it can actually take a lot of work. There are so many networks to chose from, so many roads to travel, so many avenues to stay away from and so many potholes waiting to sabatoge what you hoped would be a smooth ride. In the end, if you’re not careful, you could find your hopes and dreams dashed as you limp along the cyber-highway we call the Internet. Before you know it, you can end up with so many user names and passwords you need to contact your local travel agent to find your way home. Either that or drop some cyber-crumbs along the way in the hopes that some hacker doesn’t come along and hide them on you.

As my author description reveals, I’ve been in the wonderful world of broadcasting and communication for a number of years. Well, okay, a lot of years. Through those years I’ve seen a lot of change when it comes to achieving effective communication. I still remember the overnight radio shifts where I echoed the famous Genesis line – “Is there anybody listening?” You find yourself asking that quesiton at 3 in the morning as you’re playing yet another song wondering if anyone is up. You even start begging for calls on the phone just so you speak with someone else who has to be awake at o’dark hundred. Many times the voice on the other end of the phone was that of some teenie-bopper who figured you were talking just to her and she wanted to meet you after your shift. (Ick! Pimples and all – no thanks I think I’m busy).

We’ve Come A Long Way Baby

Through the years computers came along and then of course the advent of the Internet. I find it interesting how many people think the Internet is some great recent invention and all the so-called experts figure they have the corner on the market for all wisdom and knowledge. Just what makes an expert anyway? With the ever changing world of technology – Can anyone truly say they’re an expert at this thing we call social media? I think not.

I often find myself chuckling when I get around someone who thinks they know everything about the Internet. The so-called expert’s eyes quickly glaze over when I ask a very simple question – Have you ever heard of a BBS? Often they stammer their way through some lame answer trying to show their genius. But in the end, very few remember, or even know what a BBS is. Once upon a time a friend and I actually ran a BBS on his home computer running an ultra-fast 2400 baud modem! Whew! That was fast. Then we really picked up steam when we found a friend with access to the Internet through his daisy chain of calls so we could send an email from Lexington, KY to Ontario, Canada and get a response in 3 days! (If we were lucky). Those were the days.

Those days are long gone and now the new class of college students these days don’t even know what email is nor do they use it. Why? Because it’s too slow and texting is much faster. Toss in social media involving the likes of Twitter, Facebook, Multiply, Identica and the endless list of other networks and responses can actually overwhelm your phone! One friend of mine said she’s started missing phone calls because all her various social media networks text her phone non-stop.

How Do We Make Social Networking…Social?

Here we discover the real question. Putting the social into social media. If you spend any amount of time on even two or three social networks you quickly discover a sea of bots and people who spew a stream of mindless information. While some of the information is interesting, if there is no interaction with their follows, then they’re really not being social. The trick, if you want to call it a trick, is to actually use social networks to be social. What a novel idea! All too often people use the various social network sites for their agenda. I’ve discovered, and am discovering more and more each day, the secret to actually getting whatever message it is you want to get out, revolves around being social and interacting with those who are following you.

For example, if you’ve been following earlier posts about myself and General Sarge on Blazing Minds you know General Sarge is about supporting military families. Karen here at Blazing Minds has been giving me tips on how to tap into the wealth of contacts in the wonderful world of social networks. I’m now coming across some great military connections and even a few people I’m considering inviting to be guest bloggers on General Sarge. However, the sad thing is, some of the so-called social military people writing blogs, have not discovered the secret of social media – They’re not social. I send messages saying hello trying to interact, but they never respond. If they don’t respond, no matter how good their blog might be, they quickly get removed from my social network.

After all, being on a social network, means you must be social.

Are you looking to let others know about what you’re doing via social networking? Then may I suggest the best place to start is simply by being social and interact with your followers. As you make friends and you become more than just a faceless Internet ID out there, you will suddenly find many people willing to help you out in anyway they can.

Yours in being social!

Dr. Rus

Without any hesitation I updated my Firefox to 3.5 and found several thing straight away!

For starters a few plugin that I use were not compatible with 3.5 and were disabled, not too much of a fuss as there were only two that wouldn’t work one was the Microsoft .NET framework assistant and the other was the EntreCard Toolbar, now the toolbar is something that I do use, so not been able to use it has caused a drop in my EC, but I’ve had to resort to the original method of dropping, for now anyway.

The other thing I noticed after running Firefox 3.5 for the first time is that it’s faster, not turbo fast, but as least twice as fast as the earlier version which has made my browsing that bit faster.

So here’s a run down from the Firefox site on what’s new:

Firefox 3.5 is based on the Gecko 1.9.1 rendering platform, which has been under development for the past year. Firefox 3.5 offers many changes over the earlier version, supporting new web technologies, improving performance and ease of use. Some of the notable features are:

Developers can find out about all the changes and new features at the Mozilla Developer Center.

So far everything is running great, I have noticed an increase in speed on sites that I used to visit and this is great, if your not too fussy about your plugin and can wait for the updates to arrive then I would recommend updating now, if you are concerned with your plugins, then just give it a little longer and then upgrade, by which time those plugin should have upgrade

I’ve recently been using some more Twitter websites lately which I find quite useful, so I thought I would bring an update to the Previous posts that I had posted about Handy Twitter Websites, so lets get on with it

Now I’ve just started using this website and so far it’s been very useful in seeing what my Twitting is currently like, such as my influence, generosity, velocity and clout in the Twitter Community. There is plenty of information on how to improve your Twitter stats, so quite handy really.

TweetEffect – Another website that I’ve just starting using, this is handy to show what effect your tweets are having on gaining and or losing followers. You can see simple how many you have gained or lost on the last 200 tweets that you have made, so you can use this information to find out what you worst tweets are like and the best tweets to make to gain followers.

TwitPWR – Ok so you can already create a short URL of a link when tweeting with software such as TweetDeck and Twhirl, but with TwitPWR your short URL will get stacks on how many times it has been clicked as well as producing a “Power Rating” on the website, so helping you boost your link as well as your Twitter followers!
