Ok I promise that this is going to be the last “Top List” post that I do for updates from last year, but as a lot of you who read Blazing Minds also know me for my love of music, I thought I would do a musical based “Top List” post using my personally scrobbles via Last.fm so this is my Top Artists, Albums And Track Scrobbles list.

Ever since I got my iPod Classic a couple of years ago, my music collection has been growing and though it’s not as big as some peoples music lists, so far I have around 6,320 tracks on my iPod, it is great for me and I get to add some amazinging unsigned artists to it quite frequently and have even had the honour of working with a few on my Remergence project.

So as you can expect I do have a tendency to play a lot of music on my iPod and when it is plugged in to iTunes it syncs up with last.fm and records what I have been listening to, though sometimes last.fm has a bit of a fit and doesn’t “scrobble” the tracks, but besides from that it’s all automatically done for me

This could possibly be the final update to this post, so lets get on with it

Now I’ve always been a fan of the TV show Monkey Dust that used to be on BBC Three some years ago with it’s quirky characters and amazing music, this is the show that introduced me to the wonderful musical talents of Goldfrapp and Boards of Canada!

So since having a trusty iPod I’ve been collecting the tracks that have been on the several series that the show ran over and when I originally typed this post I had 22 tracks, now at my most recent count I have 56 tracks that were used over the three series on Monkey Dust, yes that many!

And now I’m calling on fans of the series and the music to help me out, if you know of any tracks that are not listed below that have been used in the Monkey Dust episodes, then please let me know so that I can complete my collection on my iTunes playlist, so here is my current updated list, thanks everyone

As a lot of you who read Blazing Minds will know, from time to time I get the chance to review some new music by some amazing artists. The other day I was sent the new forthcoming EP from the band In Darklight, you may have seen the review I did of their album “Dying To Confess” so I was over the moon to get a chance to hear and review their latest work.

Tell me more about the In Darklight EP!

The “In Darklight EP” features five tracks: Slaves, Turn Your Back, Break, Quick Fire and Greenhouse, all of which have that In Darklight sound and feel that I’ve become accustomed to since first hearing them on the album I reviewed some time back.

What appeals to me with In Darklight and specially with this EP is the quality of the recordings, they are top quality with the sound production being spot on with plenty of power for me to have the music blasting out of my 1,000 watt system and still keeping any distortion away.

What about the music?

I can’t fault In Darklight, ok I have to admit that I have become a fan of theirs and being that I love this sound that they produce, I couldn’t really pick up on a point that I could put them down on. It’s great, everything I like to here great guitars, banging drums and vocals that actually have well written lyrics, which all of which can be hard to find these days, even with those big named bands that are making millions from their music.

Picking one particular track from the five here on this EP and saying it’s my favourite is such a hard choice as they are all great, but I would have to go for the last track Greenhouse, there is just something about the track that when I’m listening to it, it just stands out more than the others and it’s probably the one that I’ve played the most.

But don’t get me wrong every track on this release is worth listening to over and over again, they’re certainly played a lot on my iPod in the car with the windows down on a nice sunny day

OK, OK! Where can I get my hands on this EP?

The will officially be released on 15th August from your favourite stores such as Amazon (pre-order now), iTunes, Napster, Spotify and OVI Nokia

So if your looking for some fresh sounding music and something new, then this is certainly a release that you should check out.

Also if you want to hear and download some of their older work then you can by visiting the official In Darklight website.

Overall rating 10/10

Google Music is only one of the latest in a series of new cloud-based music services from major companies, including Amazon. These services, sometimes referred to as “music lockers”, allow web users to keep copies of their MP3 music files that they can access from anywhere and from any device, giving them the ability to play them at any time.

For music lovers, these services, especially the free ones, are enticing, but they also have their limitations. Rather than review a particular cloud music service, we thought it might be helpful for you to get an overview of the concept and examine some of the benefits and drawbacks of the services in general.

Pros

1. Portability – You can access your music anywhere. With some of the services, that includes your computers, laptops, tablets, smartphones, and any other web-connected devices. If you are frequently on the go and have many devices, this feature saves you time and memory space on your devices.

2. Purchase and immediate storage – Services like Amazon allow you to purchase your music and have it transferred directly to your cloud storage without having to download to your computer first.

3. Stay in Sync – Rather than constantly uploading and transferring files, many cloud music services keep your devices in sync so that the same MP3s always exist on everything.

4. Mobile Apps – If your music services offers a mobile app for your phone, you can play your songs anywhere and use a familiar interface on your phone.

5. Online backup – One of the disadvantages of digital media in general is that it is only stored electronically. If your hard drive crashes or your MP3 player or phone gets stolen, your music is gone. Using cloud services for online backup, you will have your music stored in one additional place, just in case the unthinkable occurs.

Cons

1. Connectivity required – Cloud music is definitely for the well-connected, and by that, I do not mean you know people in high places. You need reliable Internet connectivity for the service to be of any use to you. If you have a lot of music, you will also need to make sure you do not go over your service provider’s bandwidth cap. According to UK server hosting company 34SP.com, both Comcast and AT&T have instituted caps, and other service providers may follow.

2. Trust – As with any cloud service, you will have to put your trust in them to keep your music files safe. At some point in the future, the company may go out of business, leaving you either without your music or having to perform an emergency backup.

3. Device access limitations – Depending on the service you choose, there may be device access limitations. Some of the players require the Adobe FlashPlayer plugin for your web browser. Others only have apps for devices sold by the company providing the service. With these limitations, you run the risk of vendor lock-in and the possibility of a time-consuming download and transfer to another service.

4. The legal struggle – As the consumer, you may think it does not affect you, but it does. The recording industry wants a piece of the pie from music lockers, and they are will to play dirty to get it. Forget the fact that you likely already paid for the music and should be able to do what you want with it. Record companies want these services to pay licenses to store and stream the music, even for private use. Some companies have been reluctant to give in to outlandish demands, and that means the future and profitability of these services is questionable.

Cloud music storage has been around for quite a while. Some online companies do nothing else and have provided the service for years as their sole form of business. It has only recently received attention because of the large companies that have taken an interest in it, namely Google, Amazon, Apple, and, most recently, Best Buy.

For those who are already heavy users of digital media, a service for online backup, syncing, and streaming makes sense. The trick for users will be finding services that work well for them and their devices with as few disadvantages as possible.

I’ve talked to loads of people who have had problems opening iTunes links in the Google Chrome browser and coming to a brick wall, when clicking on the “Already have iTunes” button only to be told they haven’t!

So the questions is there a simple solution to this problem?

There are many website giving you tips on how to fix this problem with using IE buttons etc to try to fool iTunes and Chrome to work together, but I think I may have found a simpler solution

It’s a simple Chrome Extension called “iTunes Detection Fix“, just install the Chrome Extension and your away, yes, it’s really that simple.

There do till seem to be some problems with using the iTunes shortcuts, but if you are clicking the “View in iTunes” buttons then 9 times out of 10 it will load up iTunes for you.

Example:

Visit http://bit.ly/remergence

Click on the View in iTunes Button

Now your iTunes should boot up and display the music (hopefully)

Now I’m no saying this is a 100% solution, but hopefully it will work for you

Since posting this article when iTunes V9 originally came out, a lot of people seem to be still having the problem with upgrading their old downloaded tracks, so I thought I would repost this article. This information still works for version of iTunes from 9 upwards.

Those of us that have upgraded to the latest incarnation of iTunes may of noticed that the option to upgrade previously purchased tracks to the iTunes Plus versions has disappeared from the iTunes music store page.

Some users do have the option in the iTunes store page at the top right of the screen under quick links and others don’t, some can even get the option back by signing out of their account and then signing back in again, but for the majority of iTunes users the link to the iTunes Plus Upgrade page has gone, never to return.

If you do want to find the page to upgrade your previously purchased iTunes store tracks then simply follow this link to the iTunes Plus Upgrade page and you can then be able to upgrade your tracks to that better quality.

Hope this helps

Some time back I posted this article about iTunes V9, this posts has been slightly updated and the information is the same for any version of iTunes from version 9 upwards.

The other day I posted on my blog about “How to find the missing iTunes Plus Upgrade option on iTunes” and several friends also mentioned to me that they had trouble finding the link for the “Complete My Album” option as well.

So after plenty of playing around with iTunes V9 (upwards) I also found that I couldn’t find this option on the store pages anymore, which is a shame if you have downloaded several tracks than then want to get the rest of the album at a discounted price.

Never fear, I bring the link to the Complete My Album section on iTunes, just follow the simple link “Complete My Album on iTunes” and hopefully if all works correctly you should be taken to the page on your iTunes.

I just love it when I get an email saying “I have an album out, would you like to review it?” It’s one of the ways that I can discover new music and some new artists.

A little while back an email dropped in my inbox about an album called New Earth by 8-time international award-winning composer Sakis Gouzonis, so how could I miss the opportunity of getting his album and giving it the music review treatment here on my blog!

The first name that always springs to my mind when I hear the term “Greek Artist” is Vangelis and I’m a big fan of his, specially the Blade Runner soundtrack, so I was intrigued to hear what this album by Sakis sounded like, with a track record of awards won for his musical compositions, I just couldn’t wait to get his CD on my iTunes and get playing it.

So on to the album, New Earth

The first track on the album “From The Sky” is just so bubbly and a really happy sounding track, it brings back the days of how original electronica used to sound, with its flowing beat, it’s bouncy bass and its gorgeous sounds keyboards, off to a good start so far then

Too be honest the album does have a similar sound throughout, though a few tracks do change tempo, giving you a break from the pop-electronica feel of the album, “Eternal Peace” might be one of my favourites as it slows the beat down and has some gorgeous chords that are a bit like Jean-Michel Jarre, very nice indeed.

Then it’s back to the happy sounding tracks, the album does, to me, have that Greek feel to it and it’s one of those albums that does bring you into a euphoria of complete happiness, something that is needed in this day and age.

So, would I recommend the album?

Yes I would, after writing this music review, I would also recommend that you check out the other albums by Sakis Gouzonis, it’s nice to hear something different instead of mad guitars, excessive drum n bass and the usually hip hop that knocking about at the moment and if you’re open to listening to something that you may have listened to in the past then this album is certainly one of those to listen to.

I mean over 150,000 MySpace fans can’t be wrong and being one of the most popular artists on PureVolume, iSound and IMRadio. So check him out, also take a look at the Official Sakis Gouzonis website for more info and album downloads.

OK there I was about to boot up iTunes when my Apple software updater informed me of iTunes 10 and something called Ping.

So as I usually I installed the latest version of iTunes that usually also includes a few bug updates etc and I was interested in what this “Ping” actually was.

The first thing I’ve noticed with the installation is the shiny new icon on my desktop for the latest version, after clicking and waiting for iTunes 10 to boot up I also noticed the option for “Ping” in then left hand of the screen.

I clicked it and was confronted with the option to turn Ping on, then update my profile etc.

Now supposedly this new addition to iTunes is meant to be a cross between Twitter and Facebook, it’s been described as “Social network for music” it allows us to follow artists and friends via iTunes and post recommendations and status updates!

If you are a fan of a certain band you’ll now get updates from them via “Ping”.

Now I’m not personally sure that I will be utilising this new option on iTunes 10 it seems a good idea, but I suppose its early days, so for now I’ve got Ping turned on just to see how it runs and if it’s of any use to help build my ever-growing list of downloaded albums.

Something else I noticed is that now the list view of your music includes the album artwork, but this is only available for albums where you have five or more tracks from the album.

This version of iTunes also seems to have a slight update when you sync your iPod, instead of the screen just telling you that it is syncing your iPod it now shows you a progress bar and which tracks and how many it is actually syncing, a nice touch as at least you know now how long it will take to sync your iPod after you have connected it and strangely it does seem faster syncing my iPod than the earlier version of iTunes.

I dare say there are some other updates and changes that I haven’t noticed yet and will do in time, but for now a question to those that have downloaded the latest version of Apples flagship.

If you’ve not got the new version yet then you can download it direct from Apple..

Are you using Ping and if you are what do you think of it?

If like me you use iTunes, there comes a time when you have probably made a few playlists, these can be for anything, like a party mix or even something where you have selection of tracks for a certain mood you may be in.

I like to have a collection of different playlists with ones for my favourite remixes or ones containing a certain word!

The one I really listen to a lot lately is the one that I made from the music from the TV show Monkey Dust, which has been getting bigger over the time that I have discovered tracks that were used in the classic BBC show.

So what’s your excuse for making playlists, do you make then often, or don’t you bother?

It seems to be the big hit in news on the internet at the moment with thousands and thousands of people downloading the track “Killing In The Name” by Rage Against The Machine and joining the Facebook group to try to stop the X Factor winner from having a number one this Christmas and it may just happen! But how about an alternative, how about an artist that you may all know and read their blog, me

My little electronica project called Remergence has a few tracks on iTunes, CDBaby, eMusic, Napster, Rhapsody, Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.com and several other online stores!

So I’m been cheeky now and asking for everyone’s help in supporting my music, I doubt I could ever get to number one as I couldn’t get that many people to download my music, but one can always dream, it would be nice and it would certainly be a nice Christmas present to get a good amount of downloads
