So you must have seen the blog post I made about the @ApolloCinemas Winter Weekend that I posted up recently, well it was a great day, but the surprise came when I was asked if I wouldn’t mind being interviewed about my film reviews and my blog!

Surprised! You’re Not Kidding!

Suffice to say I was really surprised that anyone would find my blogging exploits of any interest, but Craig from Apollo Cinemas got me upstairs and sat down to be interviewed on @PointFMRhyl. My nerves were all over the place as I sat down with a microphone in my hand waiting to go LIVE on local radio!

But I do have to say that I was put at ease and besides my voice blasting out through the Apollo Cinema foyer and outside above the sound of the fun fair and across the car park, it was fun.

So I was asked about how long I had blogged, how many film reviews I had written, here on Blazing Minds and else where, how I watch a film and work out my reviews etc. Also what films I’m looking forward to seeing as what is my all time favourite film.

I’m not sure how long I was interviewed for but, it seemed like an eternity, but the clammy hands did wear off after a while

Put On The Spot By My Good Friend Craig!

Now I do have to mention Craig here for putting me on the spot, not only for getting me on the show, but for getting his own back for me winding him up!

So there I was before the interview taking photos with @SlappyBear of him and Rhyl MacChicken and Spencer Wilding, then Craig and winding him up that he was third on the list for photos So he got his own back by getting the question of “Why are you so mean to Craig” asked, Nice one Craig, I owe you one (Here you go Craig, your first up in the photos now )

So a big thank you to @PointFMRhyl for giving the chance to get on the radio and also thanks to Craig for giving me the opportunity to embarrass myself

UPDATED! Here’s Me Making A Complete Fool Out Of Myself

Now I was going to include a fancy looking player, but for some reason they weren’t showing up on the blog so, if you want to hear me making a foll out of myself the click on the following:

A straightforward list of favourite Christmas movies would be rather redundant. Excepting some difference either side of the Atlantic, the traditional Christmas movies are a predictable lot: ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ or ‘The Wizard of Oz’ in the main, a sprinkling of ‘Home Alone’, ‘Die Hard’ or ‘Muppet’s Christmas Carol’ as a side dish and ‘The Great Escape’ if you’re British.

But if you’re looking for something a little different this year, try one of the films from this list:

Tokyo Godfathers

Considering that barely 2 percent of Japan’s population are Christians, it’s surprising that the holiday is celebrated at all. That there is a Japanese film, set in Japan that heavily features Christmas is probably even more suprising. Satoshi Kon’s Tokyo Godfathers actually seems to have been inspired by a minor John Ford western, 3 Godfathers, wherein three cowhands return an orphaned baby to civilization.

In Tokyo Godfathers, three homeless people – an alcoholic cyclist, a teenage runaway and a former drag-queen – find a baby discarded in a pile of refuse sacks. They then set off to bring the child back to its parents, based on a trail of clues and ever more fortunate coincidences. Like ‘3 Godfathers’ the Christmas themes go beyond the time of year – three wise ‘men’ and a child in humble surroundings, as well as the improbable good fortune that they all have on the way to the uplifting conclusion. Fun and laced with heavier themes as the main character’s own sad pasts – and bleak futures – are slowly revealed. Don’t worry though, it’s all very Christmassy in the end.

Monty Python’s Life of Brian

Christmas isn’t a time for being contrary and argumentative, but that never stopped anyone before. You don’t get much more contrary than the Life of Brian, firstly because it’s mostly about Easter and secondly, because it’s a comic religious satire of almost infamous stature. In fact, the reputation that Life of Brian has for being a scathing criticism of Judeo-Christian faith is actually rather overblown. Monty Python’s comedy was always 90% silliness, and very few of the pokes at religion are anything especially scathing.

In the film, Brian is a misadventuring young man who falls in love with a member of the People’s Front of Judea, a resistance movement in 1st Century Roman controlled Judea. Brian finds himself followed by prophets and proclaimed as the Messiah, starting a movement that wakes him up the next morning (with his mother protesting “He’s not the Messiah, he’s a very naughty boy!”). Endlessly quotable and really quite benign.

Lady and the Tramp

Disney undoubtedly hopes that most of their films are suitable as alternative Christmas movies – in the last five years they’ve re-released the Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty and the Jungle Book in the hope of grabbing the Christmas dollar. Of course, one of the few films that actually contains a Christmas scene – Lady and the Tramp – won’t be out until February. But if you do have a copy of the last release around, stick it in over the Christmas period: it remains one of the studio’s sweetest movies, a cosy love story with a collection of great songs and some beautiful, idyllic animation.

Charming, and a perfect way to get some hyperactive youngsters to slow down over a hectic period. That said, the one Christmas scene is surely a modern faux pas: ‘Jim Dear’ apparently hasn’t heard that ‘a dog is for life, not just for Christmas’. If the Dog’s Trust got wind of this, they would probably have kittens, so to speak.

Citizen Kane

Films aren’t just important at Christmas because they have uplifting themes or because they feature Christmas at some point. There aren’t really any other times in the year when the television channels can put on their best and longest movies and you’ll actually sit there and watch them. To that end, Citizen Kane, the slow burning ‘best film of all time’ is a fantastic Christmas treat. Ah, but Citizen Kane is a Christmas movie after all: Kane’s sled, simultaneously the lynchpin and the most inconsequential detail of the whole piece, is a Christmas gift.

Those of you that have read my blog often will have seen the collection of movie reviews that I have recently been posting, with the most recent movies all been viewed at my local Apollo cinema in Rhyl.

The Future Is Here!

The future of Rhyl’s entertainment is certainly getting a good kick-start with the Apollo cinema giving the town a much-needed breath of life. With the use of modern technology going in leaps and bounds, bringing 3D, live shows, sports events and much more.

But it doesn’t stop there the Apollo cinema is growing with a reputation for bringing top quality entertainment to the public and with more plans in the pipeline to expand on the entertainment for people living in the surrounding area to enjoy. Bring it on I say

So recently I had the privilege of having a talk with Craig Miller and Alison Hogarth about the cinema and it’s future. The future is really looking good for the Apollo Cinema and Craig mentioned to me many plans in the pipeline which do sound extremely interesting, with the cinema expanding further and hopefully utilizing the Children’s Village which sits next to it. I’m really looking forward to seeing how all this pans out.

Suffice to say there are some great plans coming in the near future and the Apollo cinema is certainly something that Rhyl has needed for a while, a good kick up the backside.

Now some have said that I am a bit of a movie-holic and do spend a lot of my time watching films, which is true But I thought it was about time that I wrote a post about the cinema itself and those people who visit the cinema and enjoy their time there watching films and socializing with friends.

The Apollo Cinema Rhyl, A Brief History

The Apollo Cinema situated on the North Wales coast in the seaside town of Rhyl had been a staple diet for many a film goer for many years, but then he cinema closed its doors in February for refurbishment that seemed to go on forever.

At this point a lot of cinema goers started visiting other cinemas to get their movie fixes, with the advent of 3D hitting cinemas, Rhyl Apollo had its work cut out for it!

Then in August the Rhyl Apollo was completed with its £2.5 million refurbishment project, bringing the seaside town the latest in cinema technology, with five screens have all been equipped with the latest in high-resolution Sony 4k digital cinema projection, premium RealD 3D technology, and flawless Dolby digital sound.

Movie goers now have a spanking new cinema, with Costa coffee available as well all screens being licensed for alcohol which can be bought in the bar at the rear of the building with amazing sea views.

Tania Jones, General Manager of Apollo Cinemas, Rhyl, said; “It has been our goal to bring the Rhyl cinema bang up to date, with the latest cinema technology, to provide the town with a thriving entertainment hub. The all-digital, all-3D screens mean we can offer the latest Hollywood blockbusters The town deserves access to the best quality viewing experience, and we are committed to ensuring Rhyl and surrounding areas can experience their choice of film the way they should be presented.”

She continues, “The Apollo Rhyl team mission is to welcome, engage and delight local audiences. We want the cinema to be a focal point for the community; it’s a space where people can relax as well as enjoy film, music, sports opera and ballet. We’re very much locally engaged and our aim at the site is to spread our roots into the community. We have been working with Denbighshire Council on a number of projects that seek to make a positive contribution to local lives, including displaying work by local artists in the lobby space.”

I personally have to say that since the Cinema reopened I’ve been an avid visitor and as you can see from the blog, I’ve had some great times seeing and reviewing some of the latest movies, bot only in 2D but also in 3D.

Marlene Songin, Vice President, Cinema and General Director, RealD Europe comments; “With every screen in the complex equipped with RealD 3D, audiences in Rhyl will have access to the latest 3D films, from the current crop of 3D blockbusters including Captain America and Harry Potter, through to Fright Night and The Adventures of Tintin which are being released later this year.”

It’s now down to the residents and movie going public to show their support for the cinema, I give my support and will continue to bring you even more movie reviews from the Rhyl Apollo as much as I can, having a local cinema with such a great reputation for quality and having staff that are friendly and helpful, is really going to, hopefully, bring Rhyl in to the limelight for the right reasons!

Councillor David Thomas, Cabinet Lead member for Regeneration said: “This is an excellent development for Rhyl and will form a major part of the regeneration for the area. We hope this facility will attract people from far and wide.”

Fans And Visitors At The Apollo Cinema Rhyl

So I recently asked for the views of those that visit the Apollo Cinema in Rhyl and gave them a chance to win one of two Arthur Christmas Goody bags and here are what people have been saying:

Jennifer Doherty said “ I love apollo Rhyl because the staff are always polite and super helpful, my kids love watching th kids club films and my purse does 2“

Gemme Haughton said “I love apollo cinemas Rhyl because you have regular competitions, your prices are fair, the kids club is excellent, brilliant staff and you reply to people queries on Facebook and twitter you guys do an amazing job!!!“

Ben Bishop said “I love it becuase its modern and the staff are friendly and well mannered etc. its just a lovely atmosphere in there“

Michelle Williams said “I love visiting the apollo with my kids,it was awful travelling all the time 2 llandudno. The staff r really friendly, and always answer if theres any problems. The compeitions are always worth entering, and the prices r really good.“

Tina Williams said “i love the new look apollo all the staff are friendly and me and the kids love coing almost every sunday to watch a kids club film also unllike some big compnies any questions or enquiries are responded to in person instead of just pre set messages“

Angela Garner said “how many words do i get…??? i loved the apollo even before it’s big makeover. i’ve always found the staff to be really friendly, they’re always helpful, even when really busy & people are being rude to them (who know who you are!) always running good competitions that many people have a good chance of winning., not just one. prices are reasonable, for enterance, too. now you can even get a cheeky wine to see a film with which in my book is always a bouns, unless it’s at a kids club showing!!! also loving the new varity of things showing, my mum & her friends love the opera showing that have just started & she can’t wait to go and see alfie bow on the big screen (having met him in person earlier year, she’s now an even bigger fan!) i’ve always found nothings been too much trouble & they were great when my little boy sick in the foyer *cough* moving on!! the new seats are very comfy & hubby at 6′ loves the extra leg room, the popcorn & drinks sizes are perfect, family tickets are a great price, even £4.50 tuesdays are great! i personally am loving the new screens, the picture quality is beautiful & it’s so easy to get totally immersed in the film & the 3D is just good. us as a family of 4, as a couple, or with my mum we’ve been many times over the last few years and always enjoyed ourselves, you can’t can’t beat the giltz & glamour and hollywood razz-a-ma-tazz that rhyl apollo offers!! )“

Jessica Gigson said “I love apollo because its in a brilliantly convenient location, with parking right there. The staff are always friendly, the new look cinema is great, and we have fond memories of apollo since it was down by the bridge in town (where the bingo is now haha)!
Many happy times at the cinema in all it’s forms over the years, and now my nephew is old enough to join in too there’s a whole new generation getting in on the fun! (we’re coming to see arthur christmas very soon actually!)“

Nicola Arch said “We love Apollo cinemas as they are investing and generating a great place for all the family to go and watch a decent film in a fantastic place whilst helping the much needed economy in Rhyl and giving people a decent place to work. My kids love it, modern, fun and a costa coffee for me.“

Samantha Hughes said “Apollo cinema is just ace. Love the comps and the fact that us locals actually win. My kids r huge fans of the kids club at weekends. I think its great that we get the chance to watch operas etc too. Staff are very pleasant. My eldest missed her lift home after watching film the other week and staff let her wait in the building even though they were ready to lock up. So I knew my daughter was safe and not waiting outside for taxi. Everywhere is nice and clean, even the loos! Overall you’re all doing a top job, great place to go!“

Michelle Jackson said “ I went to c breaking dawn at the appollo rhyl took 7 teenagers they all had popcorn and drinks i found it quite cheap and 1 spilt a drink they replaced it free of charge and cleaned up the mess it is always clean and tidy i found the staff very helpful and all tickets where checked i to think the kids club is great for the local kids gives them a safe place to go at the weekends good job guys keep it up“

Ann Caulfield said “the staff are so friendly and polite, the facilities are always clean no matter what time of the day you visit. The food and drink are ever so cheap, the new seats are comfortable and have lots of leg space. All in all a real good night out, of which i dont get many.“

Angela Evans said “its just like the good old days when families spent time together watching a great film, pity prices werent the same as years ago but on the whole a fantastic cinema with friendly helpful staff and good comfy seats. love seeing good movies with my 3 great kids. keep up the good work and contiue showing fab films for all ages . pat yrselves on your backs !“

Clair Zumba-Farrant said “We love the Apollo, especially more so since the revamp…in a sad way (no offence to the town) but you walk through the doors and you dont feel like you’re in Rhyl anymore….this is a good thing for Rhyl though…just what it needs. It bright, roomy, classy. The staff are friendly. We love it.“

Tina Percival said “I love the apollo cinema because you allways make us welcome and find the time to help us “

Nadia Nicholson said “I love the apollo because, my little boy is 6 yrs old and wont sit still but everytime we go to the apollo he is so quite and still its lovely“

Bigger, Bolder & Better Apollo Cinema Rhyl

So a couple of weeks a go, I received a special invite from Alison Hogarth to attend a special evening at The Apollo Cinema Rhyl, how could I say no!

Last night was the night and arriving at the cinema at just gone 6PM and checking my name was down on the exclusive guest list, I was given a goody bag and went straight to the bar

Greeted With A Tasty Beverage

Entering the bar everyone was drinking champagne, so grabbed my flute and sat down to ponder what was happening for the evening, I must say I did feel a little under dressed for the occasion, but hey, I’m an almost famous blogger not a big shot business person

Oh Hello Alison

Now after a while I was joined by Alison Hogarth, who I have spoken to on Facebook but never met, so it was finally nice to get to meet her in person and to have a little chat, now if I’d been more prepared I would have had questions written down for an interview, DOH! Maybe another time

The Taste Of Things To Come

So after some tasty hors d’oeuvres it was time to get a chance to pop in and out of all the screens to get a taste of what is and will be on offer in the cinema, including a taste of 3D with The Smurfs, highlights of Wimbledon in 3D and news of possible coming soon the Olympics 2012 and more sport.

It didn’t stop there though, highlights of concerts in 3D, operas including Faust LIVE, Phantom of the Opera. Tosca and more. Even ballet such as Romeo and Juliet, Sleeping Beauty and an all time classic Swan Lake.

Good grief all in a cinema, my how those days of just watching a film in your local cinema have changed.

Speeches!

Now I do have to say that these were a little hard to here in the foyer (so if anyone has a transcript of these let me know) But they were obviously about the cinema and it’s growth and its superb refurbishment.

An Exclusive Screening For Guests Only!

At 8PM it was time to end the evening with a movie and what a movie we were privileged to see Real Steel before it’s release, so a world premiere if you like, suffice to say it was brilliant, but, you’ll have to wait for a review in a week or so, as I don’t want to spoil it for anyone.

Real Steel isn’t released here in the UK until the 14th October and the 7th October in USA, so my review will be between those dates

The Night Just Had To End

So the end of the night came upon us, I would have stayed for another movie if I’d had the chance, those of you who follow my Tweets and on Facebook will know I frequent the Apollo a lot and I can’t praise it enough.

Brilliant friendly and helpful staff, superb picture quality, outstanding 7.1 surround sound, stunning 3D, comfy seats and a wicked Costa coffee bar

So a big thanks to Alison Hogarth for the invitation to the evening and to all the staff I talked to and that have met me beyond my Tweets, Facebook and Avatar

Superhero movies have exploded into the mainstream in the last decade with countless releases and sequels for all the best known superheroes. Unfortunately some of the bigger releases such as Spiderman and Hulk never quite hit the mark. This top 5 list puts the spotlight on the finest superhero movies in the last 15 years and I hope you enjoy it.

Watchmen
Watchmen is a graphic novel collated of 12 comics created by Alan Moore in the 80s. The story revolves around a twist on history, and how the group of masked heroes helped America win the Vietnam War. A plan to release the book as a movie had been in the pipeline for many years, but it was eventually released under Zack Snyder’s direction in 2009. The film was well scripted, and the visuals were spectacular, as you would expect from Snyder. Enjoyment was further enhanced through a quirky and satirical soundtrack.

Click here to view the embedded video.

X-Men: First Class

The latest offering of the X-Men franchise takes a different direction to previous attempts. This 5th film by Marvel looks at a young Professor X and how he meets Magneto, set in the 1960s around the Cuban missile crisis. The film is sincere, and the script is far better written than the other X-Men films. Several scenes in First Class are compelling and this was the shock superhero movie success that no one was expecting. A very enjoyable watch from beginning to end and deserves my 4th position.

Daredevil
I believe Daredevil to be the most underrated superhero film to have ever been released. The 2003 film featured a cast of Ben Affleck, Colin Farrell and Jenifer Garner. The story revolves around a boy who was blinded shortly after the death of his father and Daredevil (a man with no fear) is to avenge his father’s death from the evil Kingpin. The script and story feels original and the superb cast play their roles excellently and the general content of the film is fast paced and enthralling.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Blade
Blade is half vampire-half human who survived as his mother died during pregnancy. This rare mix allowed Blade to have superhuman abilities but still have some of the traits of humans. Fighting for the humans against the vampires the 1988 action blockbuster ranks highly on this list for a number of reasons. The content was often dark and disturbing, but this just paralleled to the troubled past of Blade (Wesley Snipes). The action scenes were visceral and exciting and the story well adapted from the comic book. The soundtrack has subsequently made Public Domains; ‘Operation Blade’ a highly recognised theme song.

Click here to view the embedded video.

The Dark Knight
The number 1 has to go to the 2008 Batman remake by Christopher Nolan. The film relives the quests of the Joker (Heath Ledger) as Batman (Christian Bale) aims to battle with crime, copycats and himself. The story is detailed and well thought through, and the effects are spectacular. The story has great pace and is as dark as the title suggests. The film proves that Nolan really is the master storyteller. Ledger tragically died towards the end of the making of this film, but it will forever be a testament to his talent. If you haven’t seen it, you must. Do it tonight if you can.

I hope you enjoyed my top 5 and special mention to Iron Man and The Incredibles that narrowly missed out on the chart.

Humans use all our senses to perceive the world around us.

As newborns, it is touch, smell, and sound that provide the signals we need. Parents themselves are hard-wired to react to the cries of their child; a baby in distress is a powerful sound that makes adults run – in one direction or the other. Our ancestors relied on sound for important signals that were crucial to survival, and our emotional response to different types of sound explains the roots of language development.

So it should come as no surprise that sound plays a huge role in the emotional effectiveness of visual entertainment, even though most people don’t realise how they are being influenced. Next time you watch a movie or TV show, try to keep your ears open as well as your eyes. It isn’t always as obvious as the dramatic, emotional soundtracks to important scenes. Pick out the little motifs used to define the characters and places. Listen out for sound bridges between scenes that help you understand what you are meant to be feeling.

In the evolution of music for film and the big screen, live piano players in theatres were quickly replaced with pre-recorded soundtracks and then acted voice recordings by the performers themselves. How many theatre pianists got it ‘right’ every time? For a short while they had the power to completely change the intended emotional effect of any scene simply by picking a different cadence, tempo or key.

The developments in recording technology were a great relief to the directors and producers of the day, giving them full and unprecedented control of the emotional power of sound in their productions.

The way sound can completely alter your experience of a visual scene is easy to test:

Try the famous race scenes from Chariots of Fire with Stockhausen instead of the original Vangelis soundtrack. The emotional effects were glorious, inspirational and victorious; we feel that the runners are truly magnificent. With our alternative soundtrack, viewers are more likely to feel pained, disturbed or even feel sorry for the runners – suddenly, it looks like it hurts.

Replace Wagner’s The Ride of the Valkyries in Apocalypse Now with The Birdie Song. The original is epic, dramatic and powerful to the point of terror. Our remixed version is extremely surreal and dream-like, and also brings feelings of the comedic and ludicrous. Are we supposed to be laughing?

How about the fight scenes in The Matrix to the soundtrack of some nice Irish Folk ballads? Or try and come up with a few of your own.

Next time you are watching something, just consider how much of what you are feeling is actually down to what you are hearing.

There are many memorable cars out there from the big screen and I am not going to go through all of them just the ones that made a difference on my life and I am sure that some of these have made a big impact on you also. In no particular order here are some of my top cars from the movies.

RC- Toy story

Click here to view the embedded video.

I am going to start with something you don’t see appearing in these kinds of posts usually and that is RC from Toy Story! Although a lot of you might be thinking why I have included a small role character in this post just think about it for a second, without RC the plot would not have moved forward (Buzz being pushed out the window) and at the end of the movie RC saves the day with the rocket lit whilst Woody and Buzz are on the back!

Of course the other reason that this is in the list it because I grew up watching this movie and will use any excuse thrown in a character!

Batmobile

Click here to view the embedded video.

The reason that I have included this on the list is simple because it is a vehicle that has grown up with the franchise and not just in the movies. With every comic book, graphic novel and movie it seems Batman and the Batmobile are taken on in a slightly different way. In my opinion the best one we have seen over the yearsis the one in the original television series and this is simply because there are so many gadgets seen in the car.

The issue I have with the new car (the tumbler) is that it really is just a tank and the numbers of gadgets within the car are pretty limited.

DeLorean DMC-12

Click here to view the embedded video.

Back To the Future of course is the film that made this one famous and since then the car has been voted top of hundreds of car lists. In Doc Brown’s own words “if you’re going to build a time machine out of a car, why not do it with some style!” and of course something to do with the stainless steel construction too.

One of the high points to my Florida trip last year was seeing one of the original cars in pristine condition and my high hopes are to one day own a replica of the car. They are fantastic and really make the series what it is, perfect.

AMC Pacer “Rhapsody”

Click here to view the embedded video.

This one is of course the car from Wayne’s World and is most famous for its liquorice compartment at the top of the car and of course the performance of Bohemian Rhapsody that can be seen in the video above. This movie actually pushed the song back to no#2 in the charts nearly twenty years after it was released!

Although this is by no means a complete list it is just a few of the cars that I grew up watching on the screen. They are also films that I can go back to at any stage and what time and time again. Some of the other obvious movies where the cars feature heavily are Ghostbusters, Bullit, The Italian Job, Ferris Buekker’s Day Off and of course who could forget The Blues Brothers and the entire Bond franchise!

The Raspberry awards or “Razzies” as they are better known as celebrate the worst films over the past year and this year is no different! Sometimes it is safe to say that actors need to be told that not every movie they make is film gold and instead of deserving a place on the shelf it barely deserves a place in the 99c section of the bargain bin!

The Highlight Of 2010 Awards

Click here to view the embedded video.

Before we look at the 2011 awards lets first take a look at the highlight of the 2010 awards. This of course was Sandra Bullock accepting the award for worst actress for All About Steve. Very rarely will you find that an actor ever turns up to this awards ceremony and this is because most of them are far too “high and mighty” to acknowledge that they have made a movie that sucks!

The best part about Sandra coming to this awards show was that she was having a laugh about it and even brought along a copy of the movie to give to every member of the audience just as a joke. As you can see in the video everyone thought it was brilliant that she was there and I can also bet money on every single member of the audience growing at least a bit of respect for the actor.

Of course just a few hours later she managed to secure the Oscar for best actress for her move The Blind Side, what a turnaround!

Onto 2011

So with the 2011 awards now nearly here let us take a look at some of the nominations that really are deserved and perhaps ones that are a bit harsh. There are a number of movies up this year that I am personally very happy about, let’s see if you are in agreement.

Twilight Gets Backlash

I for one am strongly against the Twilight Saga with its rubbish interpretation of a vampire and of course all of the terrible acting that we have seen since the first film. I must confess that I went to the first film thinking it was going to be a cool vampire flick and it ended with the only scene that I found to be mildly enjoyable was the baseball scene (around 2 minutes of the film). The rest of the movie was Robert Pattinson looking paler than a collection of bodies found at a morgue and Kristen Steward looking like, well Kristen Stewart! The fuss over these movies is beyond me but then again I am not a teenage girl that clearly has nothing better to do.

This year it would seem that Twilight is up for worst picture, Robert Pattinson for worst actor and of course Kristen Stewart for worst actress. It also comes in for worst screenplay and worst sequel too. Brilliant!

We Don’t Want Sex Out Of The City

Although I personally couldn’t stand the series when it was on the television and have no interest of watching either of the two movies I can see the appeal of the show. However when the recent sequel took the girls (old women) out of the city and pushed them into Abu Dhabi it seemed to have upset a lot of the fans. This one is up for worst sequel, worst screenplay, worst director, worst screen ensemble and worst picture too! Perhaps the sex needs to stay in the city?

The Last Airbender – Could Be The Last?

Another movie that is up for a lot of razzies this year is the Last Airbender. Now this is actually a movie that I enjoyed but I can certainly see why it is up for so many Razzies. The visual effects were pretty cool but other than this it had no major plotline and the acting was just awful. This one is up for worst picture, misuse of 3D, worst director and worst rip-off.

These are just three of the movies that are being torn apart. Actors like Jennifer Aniston, Jack Black, Gerard Butler, Cher, Jessica Alba and Rob Schneider are also all up for Razzie awards and most of them deserve it too!

What do you think about the nominations this year?

We all hate to be taken out of context. Context is our last bastion in conversational self-defense.

“Why did you say that?”

“I never said that.”

“Yes, actually, you did.”

“No. I didn’t.”

“Yes. You did.”

“Okay, maybe I did, but it was taken out of context.”

It’s frustrating to have to defend yourself when people haven’t heard the whole story.

On the flip side, sometimes you have to advertise yourself with a single line full of subtext and that single lines is all you get. A perfect example of this? Movie poster taglines.

Ever go to the theater early, say an hour or an hour and a half before your movie’s show time? You get an early start on a bucket of popcorn along with an ice cold drink and you walk leisurely down the darkened hallways of the Cineplex looking at all the backlit posters promoting coming attractions and blockbuster features. What gets my attention the most is not necessarily the big names, the A-list stars or directors or even the brightly colored images. No, what really hooks me are the taglines.

Taglines are the one shot a film has to describe itself to you before you take a sip on your Dr. Pepper, shrug your shoulders and move down the hallway. It’s like speed dating for movies.

We could learn from these movie taglines to create taglines for our own blogs. Granted, Hollywood is big business, so you can bet they invest a ton of money in their films’ marketing. Lots of clever, witty minds come together to whip up the best possible taglines.

The best taglines are concise and capture the spirit of the movie and not necessarily the entire plot. It’s typically a single line, two lines at the most.

Some of my favorite taglines over the past few years?

Oliver Stone’s biopic on George W. Bush, “W.” – A Life Misunderestimated.

“Forgetting Sarah Marshall” – The Ultimate Romantic Disaster Movie.

“Where The Wild Things Are” – There’s One In All Of Us.

“It’s Complicated” – Divorced…With Benefits.

Sometimes it doesn’t even need to be particularly witty. It just needs to get straight to the point like,

“Inglorious Basterds” – Once Upon A Time In Nazi Occupied France.

Some movies don’t need a tagline at all, like “The Dark Knight”. It’s quite obviously a Batman movie with a built-in loyal following. But the tagline “Why So Serious?” gave it an added dimension of macabre humor.

Other times, a movie absolutely depends on its tagline. Best example would be “Michael Clayton”. A movie with that title could conceivably be about anything. It could be about your dentist or your high school valedictorian or it could be about an English ambassador to Nigeria. So, they gave it the tagline “The Truth Can Be Adjusted”. Granted, even with that tagline, it could still be about your dentist, but doesn’t that tagline make a movie about your dentist sound all the more dangerous and exciting?

What are some of the all-time best taglines? I love these ones:

“Alien” – In Space, No One Can Hear You Scream.

“Jurassic Park” – An Adventure 65 Million Years In The Making

“Shrek” – The Greatest Fairy Tale Never Told

Some of the worst? How about:

“The Cable Guy” – There’s No Such Thing As Free Cable

“Bullet Proof Monk” – A monk. A punk. A chick. In a kick-ass flick.

Back to the world of blogs and websites, some of my favorite taglines are:

Youtube – Broadcast Yourself

Pink is the new blog – Everybody’s Business Is My Business

What are some of your favorite movie and blog taglines? I would love to hear them.

At last I have gotten round to writing another post here on Blazing Minds. I am fond of writing film reviews on this site and last night (thanks to the fact I couldn’t sleep and the movie was on Sky) I got round to watching the remake of Friday 13th.

I have to say, I wasn’t that impressed.

The problem with reinventing a series like this one is that you still know what is going to happen. Jason comes into the fray, kills a lot of drunken teens and then gets killed by someone that has never harmed someone in their entire life. All of this always tends to be a waste of time as he just comes back at the end. This movie was no different to the others and in my opinion; most of it was almost laughable.

Okay they had few fan favourites thrown into the mix like the red barn where he gets hung in one of the earlier movies and of course the hockey mask. Throw in the machete and you have Jason pretty much complete and it is worth noting that it doesn’t take a fantastic actor to play him. Also fans will note a wheelchair can be found in Jason’s lair which represents the paraplegic he killed in film two as well as his mother’s sweater, you need to look carefully for these.

Speaking of the actors, they weren’t as bad as some of the older films and although I don’t like him (thanks to my girlfriend fancying the pants off him) I will admit that Jared Padalecki played his part well.

The only thing that really does annoy me about the films in general is the fact that it just wouldn’t happen. Jason’s death was inevitable and the way in which he was killed off wasn’t that great. After killing him surely you would just get out of there that same night. Why on earth would you wait until morning, throw the body in the lake and then try to leave. It just doesn’t reflect on what a person would do.

All in all I would say this film stuck to the Friday the 13th roots which although not a bad thing it was just not good enough to reinvent the series. I certainly cannot see a sequel for this coming any time soon.

So although mostly complaining about the movie I would still give it a fair 6.5/10

Movie remakes are something that the fan of the original either really looks forward too or just dreads because they know it will either be a total flop or a huge success. There never seems to be a halfway point for movie remakes which is a great shame. The question that I ask to you, readers of blazing minds is, are these movies a waste of time, money and effort to go and watch at the big screen? Here is my take on a few of the recent movie updates.

Italian Job

Let’s face it, was anything actually going to beat the 1969 film with Michael Caine in it shouting the line “you were only supposed to blow the bloody doors off”? Although the 2003 remake was meant to be homage to the original and it received success I have to say that I hated every second of the movie despite one of my favourite actors, Seth Green, featuring in the story.

Nightmare On Elm Street

Yes they have gone there, they have remade my favourite horror movie of all time and I have to admit I have not had the opportunity to go and see the movie as of yet so I am not sure on what to put here. I have read various reviews on rotten tomatoes and it would seem that what they have done is just stripped the film and copied it frame for frame with modern day CGI effects. What with the added blow that Robert Englund not playing the lead role I can’t see this being a very good movie at all.

Remakes That Have Worked

Transformers

Although this one in itself is not a remake of a movie it is still a brand new way of looking at the franchise and in this respect it is a remake. I was a big fan of the transformers series when I was a kid and when I learned that a full scale remake was being created I thought it would be another poor movie, this is until I went and saw the movie. It was a fantastic reboot of the series and you can see why the second (2009) and the third which is due out in 2011-12 have been made.

Star Trek

Whilst I would never call myself a “Trekkie” I will say that I did occasionally catch the series when I was younger and have seen a couple of the movies. Although the 2009 movie actually changed a lot of things when it came to the characters I still feel that this was a remake well worth making and this is why at least another two of these have been made.

So what do you think, are movie remakes a good thing or are they simply there to make a quick buck because they know the old fans will go and see it?

I was recently lucky enough to attend the European film premier of ‘Valentine’s Day’ in Leicester Square, London. I say lucky, but it will probably be the last film premier I attend, as although it was a great experience, it doesn’t half make you feel insignificant.
My girlfriend got the tickets from a contact that couldn’t make it, and it sounded very exciting when she broke the news to me that we would be hitting the red carpet with all the celebs. It was unfortunate that the film was Valentine’s Day, but I’m not one to look a gift horse in the mouth.

The evening started off quite stressfully actually. The tube at London Victoria was closed, the queue at the taxi rank was a good 30 people long, and we had about 20 minutes to get to the Odeon in Leicester square. We eventually got a taxi, but had to grind to a halt when driving down The Mall to let Prince Charles and his police escort out of Clarence House where he lives. I promise I am not making this up; it seems Charles had somehow wangled some tickets to the premier as well, and no one in London was going to stop him getting there. With the traffic at a halt we had to run the rest of The Mall, through Trafalgar Square and arrived at the cinema in our finest attire with bright red faces and panting like huskies.

The red carpet walk was a bit of blur to be honest. Whilst the celebrities hogged the flanks, soaking up the camera flashes and screaming fans, we sort of shuffled down the middle, trying not to catch the eye of any reporter who thinks they may have seen our faces somewhere before. Before we knew it we were inside in the lobby and being hastily shown the door to the viewing room. On the other side of the room a section had been cordoned off for the rich and famous, who sipped champagne and tried very hard to maintain their forced smiles. I paid a visit to the bathroom and then went to wait outside the ladies for my girlfriend, who was also trying to avoid the dreaded ‘mid-film bladder pain’. As I was waiting for her to appear, who came out of the bathroom but none other than Jessica Alba. I smiled at her, but I’m not sure I registered on her radar as she just ignored me. Finally my girlfriend reappeared and didn’t ignore me. Who needs Alba anyway!

The film was quite enjoyable. Nothing really happened apart from a number of attempted ‘Love Actually’-style serendipity story lines. But it was one of those films you don’t have to try very hard to keep up with, and can just enjoy the music and lovey-doveyness of it all. Unfortunately I was sat next to an obnoxious girl who had just been on the last serious of Celebrity Big Brother (no names). She played with her iPhone for about half an hour, chatted constantly to her minion whom she brought along to hold her bag, and then got up and left. Funny how she was able to stand outside for two hours on the red carpet, in the freezing cold, posing for photos and giving interviews…but thirty minutes in a cosy cinema was just too much!

All in all it was a great experience and a fun film (Taylor Swift was the best character to my astonishment). Watch it on DVD when it comes out by all means, but pick a day when you’re either hung over or just want to zone out for a bit. The premier itself though felt very fickle and more about everyone trying to get their five minutes in the lime light, rather than showcasing the film itself. Ironically, the ideas of ‘love’ and ‘romance’ never really seemed to come into it
