I recently started an unofficial MySpace boycott as a result of their decision to remove the ability to search by location. As a local music reviewer for my city, I turn to online resources when seeking new bands to write about. When MySpace launched their revamped site late last year, they altered their advanced search and omitted the special feature that allowed a searcher to navigate at a local level. Enraged with frustration, I emailed and asked what had happened to my beloved zip code search field, to which they simply replied “We’re sorry. That function no longer exists.”

This painful realization has given me no choice but to experiment with a new medium: Reverb Nation. The website has been around for a while, but it wasn’t until I needed to find new local bands that I decided to complete my profile and become an active member of their community. Since then, I’ve come to realize that the niche website actually provides more benefits to both the musician and the reporter than MySpace. Read on to see why.

General Search

As I mentioned, being able to find bands by location is essential for a blogger who only covers events local to their city. Furthermore, musicians who are seeking like-minded bands to schedule and play gigs with will want to be able to search by zip code. Reverb Nation sorts the returns of a general search query by artists, venues, and labels and then allows a deeper search of on-page content if you still can’t find what you’re looking for.

Browsing

Reverb Nation lets its users search in a variety of ways. Browse bands by musical genre. Search artists by name, genre, profile media, and location. Search songs by title or lyrics. Search for shows by date, artist, genre, or location. Search for venues by location. Search labels and management by name. Even look for other fans based off of their musical preferences and location.

Stream music while searching

I frequently query for local shows. Organized by date, a list of artists performing is returned. If that particular artist has uploaded media to their profile (and honestly, what credible working musician wouldn’t have their songs posted?), Reverb Nation lets you play that song directly from within the vertical search results. The music player (which permanently resides in the upper right corner) will stream the song uninterrupted, even as the browser advances to a new page.

Artist Tool Kit

Though I’m not a musician myself, I see limitless advantages to maintaining an artist profile on Reverb Nation. I respect the tools that Reverb Nation gives to bands and artists to keep them more organized, as well as to offer recommendations for quality service providers; I bet MySpace never told musicians how to find a good intellectual property attorney. Furthermore, Reverb Nation provides an effective structure to the information that bands make publically available. For this reason, the extensive tool kit provided by Reverb Nation indirectly makes my job easier because I can find newsworthy information in the same place every time, no matter which artist I’m researching.

So after loading my HootSuite interface for my Twitter feeds today I was confronted with an option to go Pro or keep with what I’m using at the moment, but at what price?

For starters, those of us that have used the marvellous HootSuite for free will have a reduced amount of social networks, RSS feeds and no Social insights.

Now while most of you may be saying but I only have one Twitter account and nothing else then maybe that is ok, but today people have not just a Twitter account but also FaceBook, FourSquare, MySpace, Linkedin and even Facbook pages, now that’s more that the allotted 5 Social Networks!

And you are only allowed 2 RSS feeds, looks like I’ll be going back to TwitterFeed for that then!

So what is it going to cost you to have what you now have with your HootSuite, well it’s going to cost you $5.99 (£3.77) a month, ok, it doesn’t sound much, but is you total up other costs that you may be spending over other things you may have such as your web hosting, then it soon total ups.

I’m not saying I’m a miser, ok I am really, but for me, I’ll be removing HootSuite from my computer and even from my BlackBerry and I’ll be using other Twitter apps over this one

I just love it when I get an email saying “I have an album out, would you like to review it?” It’s one of the ways that I can discover new music and some new artists.

A little while back an email dropped in my inbox about an album called New Earth by 8-time international award-winning composer Sakis Gouzonis, so how could I miss the opportunity of getting his album and giving it the music review treatment here on my blog!

The first name that always springs to my mind when I hear the term “Greek Artist” is Vangelis and I’m a big fan of his, specially the Blade Runner soundtrack, so I was intrigued to hear what this album by Sakis sounded like, with a track record of awards won for his musical compositions, I just couldn’t wait to get his CD on my iTunes and get playing it.

So on to the album, New Earth

The first track on the album “From The Sky” is just so bubbly and a really happy sounding track, it brings back the days of how original electronica used to sound, with its flowing beat, it’s bouncy bass and its gorgeous sounds keyboards, off to a good start so far then

Too be honest the album does have a similar sound throughout, though a few tracks do change tempo, giving you a break from the pop-electronica feel of the album, “Eternal Peace” might be one of my favourites as it slows the beat down and has some gorgeous chords that are a bit like Jean-Michel Jarre, very nice indeed.

Then it’s back to the happy sounding tracks, the album does, to me, have that Greek feel to it and it’s one of those albums that does bring you into a euphoria of complete happiness, something that is needed in this day and age.

So, would I recommend the album?

Yes I would, after writing this music review, I would also recommend that you check out the other albums by Sakis Gouzonis, it’s nice to hear something different instead of mad guitars, excessive drum n bass and the usually hip hop that knocking about at the moment and if you’re open to listening to something that you may have listened to in the past then this album is certainly one of those to listen to.

I mean over 150,000 MySpace fans can’t be wrong and being one of the most popular artists on PureVolume, iSound and IMRadio. So check him out, also take a look at the Official Sakis Gouzonis website for more info and album downloads.

Ever popular than ever I’m proud to bring you another interview in my series of “Who’s the Band” and this time I bring you an interview with Dysfunctional Kid, so I’m going to stop rambling on and get on with the interview..

Q: So how did you come upon the name of your band? Is it the first name you chose?
A: It was made up one night, I don’t remember when. Dysfunctional Kid was kind of
my solo project back in the day, now that we’ve grown to a full band we’re
stuck with the stupid name.

Q: Introduce each member and instrument played or role in the band?
A: Levi “Multiple Beards” Netto plays drums and does none of the singing. Marl
Bro plays bass and takes care of some background vocals. Erik B. plays guitar
and does half of the singing and I play guitar and sing the other half.

Q: So what genre of music would you say you are in and who are your major influences?
A: I think Punk Rock is the closest you can get to naming the music we play.
We’re mainly influenced by a lot of cool bands (too many to name them), D.I.Y.
ethics and cool or uncool things that happen to us and people we care about.

Q: How long have you known each other? Where did you first meet up?
A: I’ve known both Marl and Erik for a long time, since we used to be in another
band a few years ago. Levi was a good friend of a good friend, we needed a
drummer and we got together in my bedroom and from that moment on it just
happened. Erik was the last member joining the band after being a three-piece
for a year. He played in a band called Well Known Secret before joining us.

Q: How long has you band been performing/producing music? What inspired you to produce your style of music?
A: It started out in 2006 with a few songs I wrote all by myself. Then two years
later we got the band together and started writing new songs more and more. We
started playing live shows from 2009 and on..

Q: Are you signed to a record label (Indie or major)?
A: No, we’re taking things the D.I.Y. way. We’re releasing our stuff on our own
record label of Suburban Sultan Records.

Q: Where can people find your music? Do you have an official website?
A: We don’t have an official website, people can check our MySpace page
(www.myspace.com/dysfunctionalkid) which is official enough I guess.

Q: Have your ever performed live? If so where and to how many?
A: Yeah, as said before we started playing live shows from 2009 and on. We’ve
played quite some shows so far in several places on several festivals in the
Netherlands, Germany and Belgium. Sometimes in front of 10 people, sometimes in
front of 100 people but we don’t care about that, as long as we can play,
we’re happy.

Q: Who writes/produces the music and/or lyrics to your tracks?
A: Most of the music is done by the entire band, we all have our touch to it.
Lyrics are done by Erik and myself.

Q: How would you describe your music-making process?
A: It starts out with a cool idea, most likely a simple/standard guitar riff with a
vocal melody and a rhythm in mind, then we come together and everyone adds his
bit and then work it out. It’s a great feeling when a song comes out of just a
simple basic idea.

Q: What has been your biggest challenge as a band? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?
A: When we started out in 2008 we just wanted to do one show but after that show we
decided to do some more. We kind of missed the feeling of playing live shows and
it was great to experience that feeling again so we just played as many shows as
possible in our first year of existence and I think it worked out pretty good.
We had some great nights, met cool people and played with really awesome bands.
We’ll continue doing that.

Q: What’s your ultimate direction for your band? Are you seeking fame and fortune?
A: We are definitely not looking for fame and fortune. We just want to have a great
time playing live shows with great bands and meet awesome people. Beside that we
just want to record and release an album every now and then.

Q: What advice do you have for people who want to form their own bands?
A: Start out by doing what feels right and stick true to it.

Q: How can fans-to-be gain access to your music? Do you have a website with sample songs or a demo CD?
A: Some of our songs are showcased on our MySpace page (again that is:
www.myspace.com/dysfunctionalkid). We don’t mind if people illegally download
our music, it’s a great way to get our music heard and if someone thinks
it’s cool, come to one of our shows and we’ll have a great time.

Q: Is there anyone you’d like to acknowledge for offering financial or emotional support?
A: All of our friends and families for both offering financial and emotional
support, we love you guys and girls. Also, big thanks to Patrick Notten for
recording most of our stuff for free, you’re the best.

Q: Any last words?
A: If there’s anyone who likes us, get in touch, we’d love to play at your
house, in your basement or anywhere else. Alright!

Thanks for the interview guys

It’s the, excuse the pun, BUZZ word that is racing around the internet at the moment, everywhere you look Google Buzz seems to popping up and a lot of people are going crazy over it, saying that it will fend off the likes of Twitter and become the new kid in town, but will it?

Google Buzz will bring your social networking direct into your Gmail or Google Reader along side with your RSS feeds.

Click here to view the embedded video.

The ability to add all your social networks in one place also have a good clean view of what’s going in the Google Buzz world is nice, but, it’s yet another option for us to waste what little time we have these days.

But saying that it is nice that rather than only having 140 characters to play with on [intlink id="109" type="category"]Twitter[/intlink] you can ave as much as you want and also on the plus side, it is a lot easier to keep up with conversations that you may have started via Google Buzz.

I think that at the end of the day there is going to be a division of users, Twitter, [intlink id="facebook-twitter-orange-texting" type="post"]Facebook[/intlink] and Google Buzz. But hasn’t it always been like that, I remember the glory days when [intlink id="are-we-all-getting-addicted-to-the-social-networks" type="post"]MySpace[/intlink] used to hold the internet users attention, but slowly that started to fall by the curbside and people moved from there to Facebook, so with this happen with Google Buzz, it’s a thought and I suppose we will all just have to wait and see

Have you ever wondered how you could make adding your friends or accept friends on MySpace at the same time as promoting yourself?

Well it’s not really that hard, for some time now I’ve used MySpace with my humble music project Remergence and I use a handy bit of software that makes my MySpace usage that little be easier and somewhat quicker to control.

You can accept all your friend requests in one go and even add your own written comment to every acceptance automatically, now isn’t that great, imagine how easy it would be to promote yourself across thousands of MySpace friends with a couple of clicks.

It’s a simple to use program that will allow you to have complete control of your MySpace account or accounts.

FriendBlasterPro leverages the newest marketing medium for you. MySpace is a social network site where millions of people go to set up accounts about themselves and to interact with others. These members add each other as friends and take part in the many features MySpace has, creating an extremely large social network.

Using this social network to market your products, services, events or bands is an extremely powerful new method of advertising. The process is very easy. You start by creating an account for your product on MySpace. You then send friend requests to other MySpace members, either targeting specific users or sending random invitations. Once you have your own network of friends who are interested in your product, you can send messages directly to them about product information, upcoming events, etc. As your list of friends grows, so does your profits.

Here are just some of it’s features:

Target your market based on a members age, sex, geographic location, interests, and more.

Gather friend(s) id’s from browsing the groups, forums, friend lists, classifieds or any other area of MySpace.

Auto Messenger that allows you to send out messages to all of your friends or to any specified target market.

Auto Commenter feature that allows you to send out comments to all of your friends.

Timed Bulletins feature that gives you full control of “how many” and “when” to send out Bulletins.

Accept Friends feature that allows you to accept all pending friend request and also allows you to send out a comment or message along with accepting your new friends.

Send message along with Friend Request feature that allows you to send both a message and a Friend Request to the same person.

NEW! Multiple registered accounts can now be chained together!

NEW! Set FriendBlasterPro to auto start (with use of Multiple account Feature).

NEW! Time-delay feature!

I’ve used FriendBlasterPro for years now and I love it, it makes things a lot easier for me and it could for you so why not Download it now!

So what’s it all about this weired title for my post, you may be thinking, well it’s a simple title for what I’ve been up to lately.

First of all many may know that I frequent FaceBook, not as much I would like to or used to but I still visit when I can and I do like to use my mobile phone for Tweeting over at Twitter.

So the other day I decided to change the tariff on my Orange phone, the network not the colour, to the Dolphin tariff, great I thought 300 free texts a month, that will save me a bit tweeting, well not exactly, I can text for free, but not to Twitter, I still get charged 20p to tweet with my mobile, shame that!

But I do have access to FaceBook, Bebo, MySpace and Twitter for free via my phones WAP, which I suppose does help, but it’s so annoying tweeting without predictive text, it’s like going back to the dark ages, pressing one key several times to get the desired letter!

So then I decided to stop by Facebook and use their mobile phone option, so I can update my facebook via my phone, no! Facebook will not let you use an Orange phone, what a complete pain in the bum!!!

What next, ah ha ping.fm, I’ll give that ago, so I did! Awesome no charge!!!!!

Now probably like me your are listed on sites such as MySpace, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter etc, but can these site become a bit of an addiction?

Speaking from experience I have become a bit of Twitter addict over the last few months and twitting when I’m out and about and even twitting my posts from this blog.

My uses of Facebook and Myspace has dwindled over the last twelve months or so, but I still use MySpace as a heavy promoting vehicle for the music of Remergence.

But is there such a thing of belonging to too many of the social network sites, I myself have lost count on how many I actually belong to and if it was not for sites such as ping.fm I would probably have problems trying to update them all.

So what do you think? Are you addicted to letting people know that you’ve just had a biscuit on the train home? Or do you think belong to too many social network site? Or maybe you don’t belong to enough?

Ok everyone this is my big favour to ask everyone who visits this blog that also has a MySpace page.

As some of you already know, I am part of a duo called Remergence and we have been producing music since around 1997, now favour to ask is a small one, but it means a hello of a lot to myself and my partner in crime JJ.

If you have a MySpace page then please add us as your friend our page can be found at ( http://www.myspace.com/remergence ) the more friends/fans we have will greatly improve our chances of getting heard by as many people as possible, it will also increase our fanbase immensely, we already have nearly 5,000 in total at ReverbNation who have partnered with MySpace to help improve our chances.
