Remergence – Wide Open Space

An Album That Sneaks Up On You

I have to admit “Wide Open Space” has a sound that sneaks up on you. Over the past few months I’ve been listening to various tracks of other music by Remergence but never listened to anything from start to finish. Yes, I would listen to songs from start to finish, but when it came to listening to a complete album, I never stuck with just one. Instead I jumped from album selection to album selection listening to a track here and a track there.

When I finally decided to listen to something by Remergence from start to finish, I was not disappointed at all. Now here I am writing a review of “Wide Open Space”. As mentioned in the heading, “Wide Open Space” sneaks up on you. The title cut starts off rather quiet. It almost makes you strain to hear what’s going on. It’s a very effective method of grabbing the listener right out of the gate. However, as you move from track to track, there’s a great build up of sounds. The amazing thing is, the subtle ebb and flow of various sounds actually end up reaching out at times through your speakers grabbing your attention and demanding you listen. In what’s probably best described as a techno-pop sound, “Wide Open Space” is captivating from start to finish.

An Album That Keeps You Guessing

Through the years as a radio announcer and disc jockey, I’ve heard a wide variety of music. I started in radio when I was 17 and now with over 30 years experience in broadcasting, lets just say I’ve heard it all. When an album suddenly takes a turn into an area of the unexpected, it gets my attention. “Wide Open Space” does just that. As the tracks moved from one to another I first thought it was all instrumental. Imagine my surprise when I heard vocals in the midst of some of the tunes. But, the brilliance and genius in the making of this album revolves around the fact that even the vocals are subtle. Nothing jumps out at you, instead you’re quietly pulled into this multi-dimensional style of music.

Over all, I have to admit “Wide Open Space” by Remergence is worth the buy and worth the listen. At times captivating and at other times haunting, “Wide Open Space” demands your attention and makes you sit up in your chair so you don’t miss anything that’s going on with the sound. Some might call the music complicated. For those I would have to say you’re missing the point of the driving force behind “Wide Open Space”. Like the title says, there are many wide open spaces in the world of music and in the world around us. This album explores some of those spaces while at the same time filling other spaces in with sounds that pull you in saying “Come take a listen so I can entice you into a quiet reflective mood”.

I know I for one am looking forward to the next offering from Remergence and I hope it comes sooner than later.

Dr. Rus

I don’t read comics or watch Star trek, I hate computer games and have no idea what the hell String Theory is, but I love luuuuuuuve The Big Bang Theory. I have watched every episode and can’t wait for the fourth season to see if Penny finally realises that the lovable Leonard is the only man for her and that she can’t possibly live her life without her three little elves. Oh yeah not to forget the possible blossoming of romance for Sheldon! Below are my five favourite Big Bang Theory moments:

#1. Episode: The Bath Item Gift Hypothesis

Sheldon is looking for a x-mas present for Penny which is somewhat a problem because he doesn’t understand Penny and well he is Sheldon! Oh and it has to be the same price as the gift he is about to receive which creates further problems since he has no way of knowing how much Penny will spend, oh boy!. Meanwhile, David Underhill, last year’s McArthur grant award winner arrives at the Physics department at Cal Tech. Not only is he uber smart but he is also really handsome and sexy and drives a motorcycle! “Hubba hubba”, thinks Penny upon meeting him, and decides to pretend to be interested in science to impress him, a fact which drives Leonard up the wall. Oh yeah and Leonard gets run over by the motorcycle… well it falls on him.

Favourite moment: Penny’s Christmas gift to Sheldon

#2. Episode: The Pancake Batter Anomaly

It’s the one where Leonard, Howard and Raj go to watch 10 hours of Planet of the Apes to avoid Sheldon. It sounds extreme but Sheldon is sick which means that he is an even bigger pain in the butt than ususal. They very cruelly fail to warn Penny who gets stuck taking care of Sheldon. But Leonard does get his comeuppance when his glasses get shattered and he has to watch a bunch of fuzzy monkeys all night.

Favourite Moment: Sheldon forces Penny to sing Soft Kitty

Click here to view the embedded video.

#3. Episode: The Einstein Approximation

Sheldon can’t sleep since he is totally preoccupied with solving a physics graphine problem. Of course this means that Leonard and Penny don’t get to sleep either. But Sheldon’s sleep deprivation is making him behave more bizarre than ever. He believes that just like Einstein he needs to get a menial job so that he can start thinking outside the box. Raj is upset because he is not invited to go to a disco roller rink with Howard, Penny, Leonard and Bernadette even though the whole thing was his idea. On the other hand, Penny and Bernadette wish they hadn’t gone.

Favourite moment: “Bazinga!”

Click here to view the embedded video.

#4. Episode: The Pork Chop Indeterminacy

To their delight Leonard, Howard and Raj discover that Sheldon has a hot twin sister whom he has never mentioned before. Against Sheldon’s wishes, Leonard invites her to stay with them, which she accepts. Leonard, Howard and even Raj (who is participating in a pharmaceutical study testing a new drug to overcome extreme shyness) are all falling over themselves to get Missy’s attention. Leonard convinces Sheldon, that he needs to act brotherly and look out for Missy’s best interests, using the argument of potential genius offspring. He tries to convince Sheldon that he would be the most suitable boyfriend out of the trio.

Favourite Moment: Leonard, Howard and Raj get introduced to Sheldon’s hot twin sister.

#5. Episode: The Fuzzy Boots Corollary

Leonard realises that Penny is out of his league and that he needs to move on. He decides to ask out his colleague, Dr. Leslie Winkle instead, who sees the whole thing as part of an experiment she is conducting. In a bizarre and rare moment of insight into the human psyche Sheldon clarifies to Leonard that Penny has not rejected him since Leonard has never asked her out. Leonard Decides to ask Penny out but she takes it the wrong way.

Favourite moment: “I am the sword master”

Now I must admit that I have been a fan of Inner Surge for many years and I thought it was just about time that I actually got of my proverbial backside and get the much acclaimed album Signals Screaming, so I did! And here’s my humble CD Review.

Originally released back in 2007 the album is just pure energy from the Canadian rock/metal band, with the opening track getting you quite unprepared for the blast of vocals that the album will bring to you, more of a thrash metal on some tracks, but with a mixture of the metal genre put in it’s deserved place.

These guys are just awesome and fans of groups such as Rage Against the Machine and Tool will love this album, tracks go from strength to strength and then you get the track “Wolves” which calms everything down, outstanding.

Streaming the tracks on the internet, just don’t do this album any justice you need to either download the album or get it on CD and play it LOUD, very LOUD and appreciate the power and the effort that Inner Surge have gone in to to produce not only an enjoyable album but one which you want to listen to over and over again!

9.5/10 Awseome
