Dealing with search engine marketing for a long time, make me realize a couple of things. One of them is that if you want great results, you need regular visitors. Such people will keep coming back to your website and hopefully visit it daily. This is something that you will need if you want to make your site more successful. It is pointless to get numerous unique clicks and not one of those people come back for more.

Here are some of the best ways to keep people coming back to your website:

1. Keep your content fresh – Updating your website with fresh content regularly is one of the best things you can do to make visitors come back. As you probably know, content is a big part of search engine marketing and not only people but search engines as well love the fresh and unique content. It is a great idea to create a blog for your website, keep it fresh and update it as often as you can. Write about different events, news and even promotions from your website. People love reading blogs so that is the way to go.

2. Design – The design of your website is also very important. As we know, flash websites look awesome but they are not the best choice you can make from a search engine marketing perspective. But the fact that your website shouldn’t be a flash one doesn’t mean you can’t make it look good. If you are not very familiar with making websites, you can always get a professional to do it for you. Make your website look good and easy to navigate through and people will keep coming back for more.

3. Sending newsletters – It is a great idea to send people from your mailing lists different promotions and inform them about changes and news. However you should be careful with that and not overdo it because people might mark your messages as spam and that way your mailing list will be useless.

4. Free stuff – People just love to get free stuff and presents. If you can afford to give something for free every once in a while, people will be impressed and keep visiting your website. It doesn’t have to be something big – people love any kind of presents.

5. Take care of customers – If you are selling some kind of a product, or offering a service, one of the mandatory things you should do is provide excellent customer service. Make sure your customers are always happy whatever that takes. After all, customers are the main source of your cash flow so you need to take proper care of them.

If you are seriously into search engine marketing, then you should do things like these to keep your visitors happy and make them want to come back to your website. These are just 5 of the best ways to accomplish that but you can employ even more methods. Just be creative.

Something that probably didn’t occur to most business owners when they first started their business was; how many people would search online for my Brand? Generally speaking the answer would be none (if you are a new business). So should you do some research online first to see if there is a pot hole in the mainstream online world that you could fill in?

This is a possibility that could soon be effecting how companies brand themselves, and gives new entrepreneurial business owners a way in to compete with larger Brands. Google is a strange beast; with its search engine algorithm changing and being “beefed” up all the time. Currently there are about 200 ranking factors that Google uses to identify where websites should be ranked in the SERPS (Search Engine Results Page). Each one of these has a set amount of weight that identifies how important it is, so some are more important than others.

Your websites URL (so this one is: blazingminds.co.uk) is also in one of the ranking factors. This is believed to be one of the more important values as well. It has been argued that this ranking factor isn’t as important as it has been made out to be, but SEO’s like me still believe it to be very important. Recently I have been noticing some of these “smaller” websites appearing in the SERPS on page one for very competitive terms, even out ranking some big brand websites. One area that I like to think I know a thing or two about is the holiday district. Virgin Holidays are one of the biggest tour operators in the UK, and utilise internet sales very effectively. For the past 5-6 months Virgin holidays has ranked at number 1 for the term Caribbean holidays”, one of the most competitive terms in the “luxury holiday” industry. However over the past few weeks they have been overtaken by a much smaller company called “Caribbean Connection”. See image below (the sponsored links are covered, to save confusion):

This website rarely appeared on page one about 3 months ago, and now it is a strong holder of position one. Every now and then there is a tussle between Virgin and these guys but they still manage to pull forward. To be fair they do have a “nicer” site and it is their homepage that ranks for this term, but Virgin rank number 1 for practically every other Caribbean country holiday.

It is this sort of adversity that shows even the small business owner can trump a larger one online, with some good SEO know how and the sense to utilise the ranking factors Google has made public. Your URL could be the factor that helps you to appear at the top of Google for your businesses best selling terms!

Sometime back I wrote a post about making the most of your RSS feed, now it’s time for a little advice on using your RSS feed with FeedBurner and Comment Luv, two very useful sites that will improve your linkbacks when you post on other blogs.

Ok let’s get started, first of all you must grab the Comment Luv plugin for WordPress or Blogger, it’s simple to install just stop by the Comment Luv website to get you hands on it.

So why have Comment Luv on your blog?

It allows your readers to leave a link when they comment on your blog to their most recent post and if you’re commenting on other blogs that use it, then it’s only fair that you give a little linky love back

Using FeedBurner for your RSS Feeds

Now this probably the most important thing for you to day when commenting on other blogs using the Comment Luv plugin, by default when you “burn” your RSS feed with FeedBurner your URL links will not show the URL of your recent post but instead to the FeedBurner address of the post, which is what you don’t want! I mean if you going to comment on a DoFollow blog using the Comment Luv plugin you want the linky luv to go to your blog, not the FeedBurner URL.

So you will need to tell FeedBurner to use your URLs, this is easy to do:

Log into your FeedBurner account and select Configure Stats, then uncheck item link clicks (see below), now when you comment on a blog using comment Luv your recent post link will now be the URL of your blog post and not a redirect via FeedBurner..

So there you have it, one more thing to add. If you are blogging, but also have a main site then make sure that search engines and RSS readers can find the feed to your blog on your main site, simple do this by adding a simple bit of code to the pages on your main site:

<link rel=”alternate” type=”application/rss+xml” title=”RSS” href=”YOUR FEED ADDRESS HERE” />

Simple replace the YOUR FEED ADDRESS HERE with your feed for example mine for Blazing Minds would be

<link rel=”alternative” type=”application/rss+xml” title=”RSS” href=”http://blazingminds.co.uk/feed/” />

Then whenever someone visits you main site they will now from the browsers search box that an RSS feed is available
