A Town Called Eureka - Season 2 - Complete [DVD]You may remember sometime back when I posted about the TV show Stargate Universe being cancelled! Well the channel Syfy are not only happy with cancelling that show and Sanctuary, they have now also cancelled Eureka (also known as A Town Called Eureka).

Don’t Get Rid Of Our SciFi

It was announced back in August 2010 that the show had been selected for a fifth series and 13 episodes, but it has recently been announced (on August the 8th) that Eureka would not get a sixth series and would be cancelled after series five of the show. But an extra episode of  series five would be produced to give Eureka a “proper” ending.

When Nathan Fillon recently said that with $300 million in Canadian lottery money he’d happily purchase the rights to Joss Whedon’s early noughties Sci-Fi epic Firefly, the fanbase leapt into action, organising a campaign to get him the rights. It was an offhand comment and one that demanded an immediate capitulation on Fillon’s part. This week, the campaign was called off and the Firefly revival was no more.

But is it for better or worse? It seems to me that when we get beloved shows back, they never quite turn out exactly how we remember them. They’ll change channels and format, and they may even just change everything as part of the package deal to get back on the air. Here’s a few case studies for reasons why if Firefly came back nine years on, nerd-nirvana may not quite be reached.

Futurama

Fox are pretty good at cancelling great shows. They’re also pretty likely to resurrect them if the DVD sales continue generating revenue. So depending on your view, they’re either our just and fair TV overlords, or they’re just completely oblivious to both quality and demand. In 2002-2003, Fox visibly treated both Futurama and Family Guy as if they’d been bitten by them, desperately trying to shake them off, beating them against the wall of incoherent time slot and mis-timed broadcast orders. Family Guy bears mentioning, but as an exception to the rule here: it has only become more like itself as time has worn on.

As the latest round of Simpsons guest stars are wheeled out, it’s easy to dismiss the whole thing as a lot of old barrel scraping. But guest stars make the Simpsons, and have done since its inception. It’s just that in recent years, the show’s pandering to current trends and faces that become instantly obscure is far more pronounced. The old cliché is that you haven’t really made it until you’ve been featured on the Simpsons, but the tendency for the later seasons to bundle actors in under their real names is frankly indulgent (and indicative of the blight on professional voice acting that Hollywood stars have been since Aladdin). Katy Perry, Halle Berry, Russel Brand, Daniel Radcliffe?

The Simpsons entered the Guinness Book of Records with 337 Guest Stars nearly six years (and seasons) ago. There are now 740 Credited appearances of guest stars, though this figure (unlike the record breaking figure above) includes the multiple appearances of actors like Albert Brooks, Kelsey Grammer, Phil Hartman and Joe Mantegna (you know, talented people who play characters other than themselves). This is quite an achievement when you consider that for at least the first four seasons, a number of A-listers were appearing under pseudonyms, apparently embarrassed about appearing on an animated show. Nowadays, we get to be embarrassed about A-listers in our animated shows. How times change.

Anyway, without further ado the best and the worst in Simpsons guest stars

With the release last week of the second season of the awesome Dollhouse Season 2 on DVD (you can read my last post about Dollhouse here on BM) I wanted to spend some time paying tribute to the man behind that not just that show, but some of the finest stories, characters and screenplays in modern times…

Joss Whedon is one of my favourite Writer/Directors. The man has so much talent and imagination and a great sense of humour. Before I knew what he looked like I wanted to marry him, but now… well let’s say I’d really love to be his best mate. :)

I think Joss’s (yes, first names – we’re best mates remember?) biggest strength is his ability to create amazing characters who are real and alive and who, even in the hands of other writers and directors, will stay just as powerful. Another thing I love about his work is the strong female characters he creates. They are beautiful, smart, funny and amazingly tough (usually with some kind of super power and they can kick anyone’s ass). I wonder what the Freudian take would be on that. Now I’ll have to admit that I had BloggerBlock and as always posted out to my good friends over at BloggerLuv for some tips and now sooner had I asked, I got a response from @JSinkeywest (John Sullivan) mentioning the new show called Breakthrough from Tony Robbins, “Who?” I asked.. But I was led to an awesome post by Kathy at Kathy Blogger which did clear a lot up for me, thanks Kathy ;)

After seeing Tony Robbins face I recognised him from the film Shallow Hal with Jack Black, so I instantly thought he was an actor, boy how wrong could I be!

So Tony Robbins is a motivational speaker and is really big over the pond ;)

YouTube Preview Image

So this show is probably going to be huge in the USA, I wonder if we’ll get it over here on in the UK, with all the satellite channels on Sky you would think so!

I did “gleam” some info from his official website tonyrobbins.com:

For over 30 years, Anthony Robbins has dedicated his life to modeling successful people in the world. Through access to their experience, he discovered the strategies that can be applied to improve the quality of your life.

He also has a Twitter @tonyrobbins which I think I’ll start following, if he’s as good as people say then maybe even his tweets may help, you just never know ;)

Anywho, I’m not really up on Tony Robbins, so I’m leaving this post to my fellow bloggers from the good old US of A to bring some info to me on Tony Robbins, yes I’ve visited his website ;)

So if you did see his show and I know a lot of visitors to this blog are from the USA, let everyone know what you thought of it ;)
