I was reading an article over at Stuff.co.nz yesterday about Tattoos now becoming more mainstream than they used to be, with more Tattoo parlours reporting that woman are having their bodies “inked” with works of art.
What do you think of tattoos? Do you like them, hate them? Do you have one yourself, would you consider a tattoo?
Let’s start a little discussion on what you think?

I’ve always thought that ’secret’ tattoos are quite nice, the ones that only special people ever see …………….. personally, I’d like tattooed instructions ….. in large type …..

I don’t have a tattoo – but one of my best friends does – and if my husband didn’t dislike tattoo’s i’d get one myself

I’ve always had this furtive fascination for tattoos! But they are permanent! I’ve yet to decide on something I’d ever want to always be on me (although a celtic-themed band does appeal to me!). Besides, technically, my official religion deems such things forbidden so I wouldn’t be able to flash it around anyway… although if I were to get one it would be in a hidden/discreet place

Thanks to everyone replying to the post, from what I have read, so far, it seems that tattoos are less of a “taboo” than they used to be, but let’s see what further comments say

Hey there Karen,
I don’t think that tattoos are considered taboo anymore. More and more women have them now so you can say that their mainstream now. There is only one type of tattoo that I do not like and that is the so called “tramp stamp”. I don’t know if it’s because of the connotation that comes with it or what but I used to think that most of the tattoos on the lower back were beautiful. But because of all the negativity around their so called meaning, it’s turned me off to those. I guess it’s true that a few bad apples will spoil it for the rest.
I love the ones that have meaning to the person. I have a dragon on my arm. I’ve always loved dragons and see them as a sign of strength and luck. No matter what’s going down with me, I know I’ll always have my dragon that will watch my back. =oD

Tattoos are great if they mean something to you. Getting a tattoo just because all your friends have one, or because you want to fit in is the wrong reason. A nice tattoo, done tastefully is very appealing, an ugly tattoo done without cause isn’t. Before I got my tattoos I made sure that they were meaningful and wouldn’t come back to haunt me 10 or 20 years down the road.

I definitely think tats are mainstream here to stay… there’s a shopping mall near here where I live, and right next to the McDonald’s is a tattoo parlour. I don’t think I’d get one soon though, but I enjoy pasting those temporary Henna tattoos
Happy Holidays Karen!

I have one on my right shoulder but I waited until I was 30 to get it. I think when I was 20 I would have chosen one i didn’t like now because I’ve changed so much. (39 currently) oh and my tatt is Wile E Coyote.

@Damien: It’s such a big decision to make that you should always make sure the tattoo has some sort of meaning, after all you are with it for life.

I just never like tatoos. I mean it may be cool now but when you get older it will be very uncool for sure.

I agree with the article pretty much tattoos have really gone mainstream. I mean we have two television shows featuring people getting tattoos. LAInk and Inked. However, with that said unique, original and thoughtful tattoos will never go out of style. Those that people get for some deeper reason and they spend their own time designing or have designed specifically for them. Those will never go out of style.
