The Watch – Blazing Minds Film Review

The WatchThe Watch – Suburban dads who form a neighborhood watch group as a way to get out of their day-to-day family routines find themselves defending the Earth from an alien invasion.

Director: Akiva Schaffer
Writers: Jared Stern, Seth Rogen
Stars: Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn and Jonah Hill

Alien invasion movies have probably seen their day and then along comes The Watch, starring Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill and Richard Ayoade.

So here we have a bunch of, what can only be described as, misfits setting themselves up as the local neighborhood watch after a vicious killing in the local Costco store, with a hope that they can catch the killer of the security guard at the store that Ben Stiller is the manager of.

The Watch – Blazing Minds Film Review

So what seems to be a good idea for a comedy, plods along with a selection of penis jokes and the humour of a teenager who has just discovered the female anatomy!

The Watch is a complete mismatch from start to finish, there may have been a few moments in the beginning of the film that did make me smile, but there was nowhere near to any belly laughs that the trailer makes you think there may be.

Ben Stiller is the same old Ben Stiller, playing off most of the styled gags that have really gotten a little old and predictable over the  last few years, those days of a funny guy have really deserted him in The Watch.

Vince Vaughn is just a constant barrage of adolescent jokes that would be great in “Animal House” but just seem to be from the same place that the invading aliens have come from.

Jonah Hill isn’t really his funniest in The Watch, he was so much better in 21 Jump Street, but in this, he’s left with a script that seems to have been written in a drunken state of mind while watching a collection of classic B-Movies.

Richard Ayoade, well what can you say, is dead pan style of delivering his lines would have had me reaching for the remote control, if I was watching the film on DVD, he just seems so out of his comfort zone in The Watch.

The Watch – Got Protection?

Forget the protection, you may need to rethink about you sanity! The Watch is an extremely badly made comedy and I say comedy loosely, it’s not really funny and it’s a rather painful 102 mins to sit through!

Overall Thoughts For The Watch

Unfunny, badly made comedy that will probably be loved by those just breaking in to puberty, but for those real comedy connoisseurs out there give this a wide berth.

    Hey there Karen!

LOL! Well I see we are both on the same page as far as our opinion goes of this movie! The whole thing should have been left on the editing room floor.

Aww no! I was hoping that this would be a winner, especially with Ayoade in the mix. Maybe his comedic style isn’t suited to American writers/directors/co-stars. Shame :( I’ll probably go see Cockneys vs. Zombies before this one then :)
