As always Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland was going to see a lot of Hype, let’s face it, with films such as Nightmare Before Christmas, Sleepy Hollow and Sweeney Todd in your catalogue, it is hard for anyone not to be excited about the latest movie that Burton has been imagined up.

After reading a few of the reviews, I have to say I was slightly disappointed as at the very most I had seen this film coming in at 3 stars from all the big reviewers. Nevertheless I cannot say I am the one for agreeing with the newspapers so I thought I would actually go and see this movie myself.

After the first ten minutes I was not impressed at all, that is until Alice once again found herself falling headfirst into the deepest hole and landing in Burton’s amazing rendition of Wonderland.

The leading lady Mia Wasikowska had no complaints from me as she played an older version of Alice perfectly keeping that innocence that the character is so famous for. As always it would seem Burton spent no expense on the costume creations with each being crazier than the last. The real life acting and animation is seamless and arguably just as good as seen in the blockbuster Avatar.

Although I first thought that Depp would be the favourite character here playing the Mad Hatter who has always been my personal favourite, I was very impressed with Matt Lucas as Tweedle Dee and Dum. However the March Hare had to be my favourite even though he only had a couple of lines which mostly consisted of the word SPOONS!

The only issues I had with the film are really just the beginning and end sequences which are very dull and almost an insult to the usual madness that we are so used to seeing in a Tim Burton film.

Only Burton could make a story such as Alice In Wonderland even stranger than it already is and he does it with his usual dark and mysterious storytelling ability that works even better with something like this. A great movie overall and I would recommend taking the entire family to go and see this.
The verdict- 4/5

Hey Ryan great first Guest Post, I took my niece to see this in 3D and she found the start and end quite boring, but she loved the film once it was in “Underland” though she wasn’t too sure about the Jabberwocky ;)

I’m waiting for this one to arrive here. I think I’ll watch it with my husband first, to make sure it’s appropriate for our kids. They’re used to 3D movies by now, but you have to make sure there aren’t too many monsters out there.

  3. Good review, I thought everything except the opening and ending of the film was superbly handled. You forgot to mention the Cheshire Cat, and how he craved The Mad Hatters hat.

I just can’t bring myself to see it. The images on the posters all remind me of the creepy things that used to give me nightmares as a kid. It’s like Clowns Gone Wrong.

Thank you for this review Ryan. I want to see it in 3D also. I watched Avatar in 3D and it was GORGEOUS, although and I am not sure yet how this 3D technology affects your eyes, because my eyes hurt in the first minutes of the movie.

I’ve hated the past couple movies Burton has done. I think Sweeney Todd is the worst movie in the world. Oh man, just thinking about that movie makes me mad that I wasted that much time of my life that I will not get back!

I liked his take on it a lot. I loved the 3D too. However, it seemed like the ending just didn’t do it for me.

Looks like I’m the only one on here, but I loved the movie.

The line….. ‘You’re mad, bonkers… but I’ll tell you a secret – all the best people are.’ is the BEST. I believe it’s true.

Loved the dog in the movie (of course being the dog trainer chick that I am)… and I certainly think everyone should abide by trying to put themselves into doing 3 things that would seem impossible to most before breakfast everyday… (or it goes something like that) Exact words fade fast, but the impression was there.

So go bonkers a little more and have wag more day!

For all its noise and distractions and CG decal, this Wonderland is a zone void of imagination; it proves how relatively mind-blowing Avatar’s Pandora actually was.
