Now I’ve been blogging on Blazing Minds for over a year now, though I had a bit of a slow start and didn’t usually get that many comments back and my earlier blog posts where somewhat short and far between, over the past year my blogging has improved, so I would like to take the opportunity to give some blogging tips to you all on what I’ve personally learned.
- Write informative blog posts.
Even if they are just about what you did in the day, show that whatever you did you have a bit of knowledge about it. - Write as you!
When you typing out your blog post, type it out as if you are talking to someone and write as you would talk with all you little quirks that you would normally have when talking to someone. - Don’t wait for people to come to you, go to them!
Comment on other blogs that you read and be yourself, don’t just comment once, go back and join in conversations, if a blog has a option to let know you when some posts in the comments then use it. - Use Twitter.
Yes Twitter can be a traffic source for your blog, use a WordPress plugin to post to Twitter when you post on your blog. - Respond to your comments!
When you get comments on your blog, respond to them, people love to see that you are also been part of your own blog and joining in with conversations that technically you started anyway when you first wrote your post. - Use CommentLuv on your blog.
Not only is this a great plugin for your readers to post their latest blog posts for some Linky Love on your blog, but it will also act as an avenue for you to find even more blogs to subscribe to and comment on, sometimes you can find some amazing blogs that would’ve been hidden from you otherwise. - Submit your posts to the Social Networks!
As well as Twitter, submit your posts to other social networks such as Digg, Mixx, BlogEngage etc. Also join Ping.fm and as many social Networks as you can and then get your blog posts automatically “pinged” to them all in one go, spreading the word that you have made a new post and you would like everyone to stop by and take a look. - Consider Guest Bloggers or becoming a Guest Blogger!
Handy one this for exposure, not just for you but for other bloggers. If you enjoy reading a blog then be bold and ask the author of the blog if they would like to be a guest blogger on yours, there’s a 50/50 chance they will say yes. Also if you are asked to be a guest blogger then take a look at the blog and see if you could bring some of your knowledge or humour to the blog and go for it, such as, I occasionally guest post at FuelMyBlog and I’ve met some great bloggers there and had an increase in visitors. - Let your visitor’s comment!
I know what you’re thinking I already let my visitor’s comment! But do you?
This is mainly for those using Google Blogger, I’ve visited many blogs in the past using Blogger and I haven’t commented for one simple reason, when trying to comment I hit that brick wall that says “Google user”, open up your options to allow readers to comment by adding their name and URL etc, see my post “Don’t loose out on comments when using Blogger” for more precise details. - Finally Have Fun with your blog.
Don’t give in to the masses that say, you MUST post about the top search keywords etc, blog what you want to blog about, at the end of the day it’s you blog and you started it, so why should you blog about things your not interested in!
So there you have my collection of blogging tips, hope you find them useful, till next time

This is very good stuff, I’ve experienced most of your observations too, in my first few months of blogging, or maybe it’s partly because I was taught of doing just that (replying to comments, comment on other blogs, etc.)
I’m retweeting this

Many thanks for Tweeting Klaus, I think it’s all something we do when blogging, but those that are new to blogging may not consider doing any of the above.

I agree with you Karen, I think that I’ve dropped on dozens of google blogs just because they don’t allow you to comment with a name and a URL.

Nice 10, Karen! I am always concerened about the ‘quality’ of the blog so it’s important to be yourself while blogging, as you said in #2. Nevertheless, I also felt pissed while visiting blogs hosted by ‘Google’ and find no way to comment because I do not either want to be ‘Google User’ or ‘Open Source’

It certainly seems to be a problem with Google Bloggers, I think it should be explained to them more clearly on their dashboards about the potential loss of comments due to some of their settings!

Totally agree with you. They should use CommentLuv JSKit plugin to make it easier for readers to leave a comment

Great post Karen. I totally agree with all your points. Especially commenting on other blogs, as I know for us… that has brought the most amount of interactive readers.
One tip I would give you is you might want to get rid of the Captcha in the comments section. I wrote a post about that about that a few weeks ago and over 90% of the responses did not like to comment on sites that use Captcha in the comment section. You really don’t need Captcha if you are using Akismet. Just a thought.

Wow… you are fast Karen! I really didn’t know if I should say something as I did not want to offend you in any way. But I also thought it might be helpful, so I took a shot and mentioned it. I hope it helps

No one can accuse me of not reading my comments
We’ll have to see if it makes any differences..
These are all very good tips; I follow every one of them on a consistent basis. Nicely written. And I’m with Doug on the captcha thing; I wonder how many times I’m going to have to put this thing in.

Woohoo, glad the captcha is finally gone
I hated it cause I always get it wrong the first time, hehe. But the captcha you had was one of the best though, the one from Google I hate the most, who can make sense of those weird looking….. gibberish-things?
Anywho, hopefully your akismet will be able to catch all the spam, mine does it just fine.

Very nice list Karen, I try to keep my lists short because I don’t have the brain capacity to put together a clean list of 10 things with details like you did here, and ALL very good points for any blogger to follow.
P.s…. I was crushed to find out that you were now also using that bar at the bottom of the page

i would make some little correction on your term you used, i think Digg, mixx, and blog engage is some of Social Bookmarking not a Social Networking. Am i right?

Excellent post. I agree with all your points. I think having fun as blogger should be very important. If it aint fun then it is pointless.
Writing good quality posts is important. Commenting on other blogs is also important.
Also, giving back to the community, promoting other bloggers.
