HOW TO: Optimize your Mac Computer

Do you encounter a slow Mac computer? It is quite frustrating, isn’t it? A lot of mac computer aficionados out there deal with the most common computer predicament which is the slow performances of mac computers. There are simplified steps on how to achieve optimal performance for mac computers.

Clutter-free – Generally, if a boot drive is very full, there is a tendency that your mac computer will slow down. That is why there is a need to free up disk space. You may store large media files such as iTunes, videos, and pictures into external hard drive such as flash disks to avoid clutter files on the computer system.

Upgrade Ram – RAM is the most significant component that greatly affects the performance of a mac computer. Adding more RAM into the system can speed up mac. You must not take this for granted because even though you have proper maintenance on your computer but with insufficient RAM, you will still experience slow computers.

Manage items on startup – Too many items on your startup can take longer than the usual time it will take to boot your mac computer. You may need to remove unwanted programs on the startup list or transfer them into a folder to manage startup items. To do this, you need to go to System Preferences. Click “Accounts” and select Login items. In this part, you need to delete unwanted and unnecessary files from the list. This can help in speeding up your mac computer.

Run programs you only need – You need to open and run programs that you only need. Once you are done with a certain program, close it. Running too many programs at the same time can slow computer performance.

Limit installation of programs – Many computer users are enticed to install many programs from the internet since they are free to download. They do not know that these installed programs can occupy a lot of space in the hard disk drives that may cause the computer to slow down. You need to uninstall these unwanted programs to free up disk space. MacKeeper is the tool to help speeding up computer.

Stay organized – For sure there are a lot of files stored on your mac computer. Actually, too many folders and items stored can take longer for a computer to work with. You must practice file management so that your files can be organized and easy access for the system to read them.

These are some tips that will help you solve mac problems. However, a MacKeeper is the best tool to achieve optimal performance on your computer. Enhance your mac computers with MacKeeper and enjoy the best performance on your computer.

A Mac needs to be optimized? I thought this needs to be done only for Windows PC’s :) Anyway, the steps you described can apply to any computer. It doesn’t matter if it’s a Mac or a Windows based PC, we have to take care of it if we want it to function properly.

I think anything with a hard drive needs to be optimized, I know on the odd occasion you need to defrag an iPod classic! I know weird ;)

I totally agree with Karen. Of course, the slow performance of PC is more ubiquitous thing, but by working with my Mac, I ran into this problem too. I hope my case is not isolated, and the post will be useful to someone else :)

    Hi all

In all honesty and form my experience, Mac computers tend to perform much, much better than their Windows counterparts and require much less maintenance.

If you install a bunch of junk on a Windows computer, it’ll slow down. To a lesser extent, the same happens on a Mac. If you uninstall all the junk the Windows computer is still slow, but the Mac will perform better.

Why? Because most Windows installation and uninstallation programs don’t clean up after themselves. Windows programs consist of (typically) many files and setting in the Registry and if these aren’t cleared, then it doesn’t matter that the program itself was uninstalled.

Mac programs OTOH comes as a single package. Once you delete that package, everything related to that program is gone. Disclaimer: There might be a few files in the System folder, but they’re of no significance.

    Just my two cents :-)

    Cheers,
    Thomas

I agree in my experience with both computers windows machines definitely tend to get bogged down, I have an old Alien that is so decrepit I hate to even start it up. The only issue I’ve had with a mac is when the hard drive gets too full – which is a serious issue with any computer. Not to say macs are flawless just more stable in general.

Thanks for the information. A friend of mine was asking how he could optimize his MacBook, I just assumed Mac was already optimized. I’ll be sure to pass on the tips.

I felt the exact way that John did when he wrote “A Mac needs to be optimized??!?” Lol. However, I think what has been written in this post is pretty universal to all computers, and would have a SERIOUS effect on PC users if followed. I currently have a Dell Inspiron 15r, and a Macbook Pro (just got it as a birthday gift, yay me), and I can honestly say that even though a good majority of the specs are very similar (RAM, Processing Unit, etc.) the Mac just outperforms the PC. I dont experience freeze ups, any lag, and the Mac is much quieter than the Dell.

I upgraded the RAM from 4GB’s to 6GB’s (I use alot of rendering programs), and the difference is just incredible. I’d say probably the most important points mentioned in the post would be to limit the installation of programs, and only run the programs you need. Doing this can cut down on alot of temporary files, malware, shareware, and other ugly little trace elements.
