How to Get Traffic Your Website Needs
Posted by Karen in Guests Posts, Internet, tags: increase website traffic, website trafficThey say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I have seen some really ugly websites become highly successful and counter to that I have seen the most beautifully crafted websites with extraordinary graphics get absolutely nowhere. So, it isn’t going to matter how brilliant you think your website is or how well you believe it is monetized. No traffic, no sales!
If your own website is not performing as well as you had hoped, the most obvious answer is that you are not getting the traffic your website needs.
This is an ongoing debate as to whether we should focus on targeted traffic only or any traffic that we can get hold of. Before you say targeted traffic of course, it may all depend on the volume. Converting your visitors into buyers is outside the remit of this article, however, do the math…
What if you got 500 visitors and converted 10 percent with 50 sales, very good. What if you got 10,000 visitors and converted 1 percent with 100 sales, even better. I would always advocate going after targeted traffic but, for the moment, let’s focus on addressing the issue of traffic your website needs.
Let me get the quickest, most difficult and riskiest out of the way first. A great many people use the advertising services of the major search engines such as Google and Yahoo. For sure this can be the quickest way to get highly targeted website traffic. The reason I also say it can be the most difficult and riskiest is all to do with the cost. When I first tried Google’s AdWords I quickly ran up a bill of hundreds of dollars for very little return.
This is not meant to scare you off using this method but to put you on your guard. If you are thinking of creating a top traffic website by using this method, then please do your homework and research the subject thoroughly. Avoid purchasing any of the guides that suggest it is easy to do. When you do your research, also compare one major search engine with another to the point that you know exactly how they work. If you do not fully understand their process, don’t do it.
Before moving on, let me put it in perspective. I know one very serious internet marketer who made over one million dollars with AdWords. Wait for it, it cost him six hundred thousand dollars. Yes, we could all argue that he still made four hundred thousand profit. Question is would you be prepared to make that kind of investment without knowing what you were doing? Didn’t think so. Moving on.
From very expensive to low cost or even free, writing articles (my favorite). The process is simplicity in itself. If you are like me, when reading articles or web content, I want it to be top quality. So, why should our readers be given anything less. Write good quality, informative content. Add value every time. Submit those articles to the major article directories. Now, here’s the thing, the more articles you write, the more often your readers are likely to stay in touch. Wow, you are already building a relationship and trust. Targeted traffic your website needs who trust you means one thing, more sales.
Along with writing articles, I now focus more on blogs than I do my static websites. They are easy to set up and to maintain as long as you are prepared to post regularly. The actual posts do not need to be long (unlike web pages) but they do need to be informative and not just sales pitches. Blogs attract a great many visitors looking for advice, help and like articles, when you build trust, the traffic your website needs will grow.
If you are on a tight budget or new to internet marketing, take a note of this last suggestion but you may not wish to use it straight away. Another way I use to get targeted traffic is to pay for advertising on top traffic websites that are related to my niches. I also make a small revenue by allowing websites to advertise on mine. This method costs so, like AdWords mentioned above, do your homework first and make sure before you commit, that the sites you are looking at definitely get a great deal of traffic which is highly relevant to your products or services.

I have a local customer that has spent over fifteen thousand dollars at a time using AdWords with very little results. You are absolutely right when you say it takes research and knowledge. It’s a very risky game if you toss too much money at it before you’re ready. Now that same business spends between ten and twenty grand a month and they are doing very well. It was a very expensive education.
I also pay for advertising spots in a few related sites but that seems to be a very limited source of traffic but I do think it helps with branding.
My favorite source of targeted and active traffic is commenting on related blogs. I always pick blogs that I actually enjoy reading to be certain the comments are sincere and real. Most bloggers will see right through the spammy comments. Personally, I ban those after two or three attempts. I love article marketing too.

Good example with that guy earning a million from AdSense. People need to remember that when they consider buying a “get rich” roadmap from internet markeeters – how much did it actually cost this guy to make $xxx, xxx in one year….

Hi Karen, what would you recommend for a website like Hiburrito? I need to keep creating more content (WOPS) to attract more traffic from Search Engines but is not easy.

I think I would personally check sites like twitter for the latest keyword trends and also do a search for top Google keywords and find what people are searching for and then create a couple of WOPS that utilize those keywords for the search engines…

Targeted traffic will always be better than generic traffic but you make a good point because you could have a relatively small amount of traffic but because they are targeted they convert well or a lot of untargeted traffic that doesn’t convert as well but because you get a lot of traffic the visitors you convert are many.
Adwords can bring in a lot of profit for businesses but like everything you need to test it and figure out if it works for you.

Your advice is excellent, and I’m very happy I came across this post. I like the discussion of investment vs. return, and the gambles one might have to take, versus using articles to build trust over time with a specific audience (and some credibility with search engines, too).
I am probably going to have to get article writing soon. Thanks again for the advice!

Traffic is most definitely where it’s at in terms of a successful website. Success really doesn’t have to be measured by money, either. When you think about it, it’s not worth having a website if you aren’t getting any traffic. Most people create websites with the intention of people looking at their website and so, generating traffic is a skill every webmaster should have.
