Twitter Lists – How To Make The Most Out Of Them

Twitter BirdIf you use Twitter often then you have noticed the Twitter Lists, these can be more useful that you may think and are an ideal way of sorting out your favourite tweeters or your celebrities that you like to follow, so let’s have a look at them and find out how to make and use a Twitter list.

Those of you who do follow me on Twitter, @BlazingMinds, will have seen that I do have several list on my twitter account and I use these as a way of keeping in touch with the many followers that I have, it’s a great way of viewing a set of tweeters without trying to sift through an ever updating Twitter timeline.

How To Set Up A Twitter List

It’s really easy to set up a Twitter List, when you are viewing someone on Twitter simple click on the their profile and select the drop down menu to show several options including “Add or remove from lists”, this will also allow you to make a new lists. Then you simple create a new list or select a tick box to add the tweeter to one of your current Twitter Lists.

So What Can You Do Now You Have Lists Set Up?

There are several things you can do with your Twitter Lists, I use them to sort out those that I want to see and read their tweets without sifting through the masses of tweets in the Twitter Timeline, I have several lists, but the ones I use the most are:

Movie and TV World – Those in the industry that I talk to and they talk to me ;)

Buddies – Those on twitter that I talk to on and off-line.

Friends and Faves – These are a list of tweeters, that are in my top list of tweeters ;)

I do have more which you can find here in my Twitter List section on Twitter. Controlling your new lists is easy, you can view them in the majority of twitter clients, including the official Twitter App. For the best control over updating your Twitter Lists I always fall back to the Twitter website as I find that the easiest way.

But for viewing, use the App you may have on your phone or tablet, when you want to know what you closest friends are doing or even those that you have added in a certain filed or business, then it’s so much easier to use your Twitter Lists instead of trying to get through the masses on your Twitter Timeline.

Ideas For Your New Twitter List

You could make a list for:

  1. Those that you want to see and maybe don’t want to follow.
  2. Celebrities
  3. Musicians
  4. Shops
  5. Tweeters that run competitions
  6. Friends and family
  7. A Group List of all those that may be going to an event

So if you are looking in to controlling how you view those that you follow on Twitter and just want to keep everything in an organized way then give your Twitter Lists a try to see how easier it is to view those tweeters that are more important to you.

Now It’s Over To You!

Do you use Twitter Lists and do you make the most of them? What’s the best use you have found for Twitter Lists?

Awesome tips Karen. I do have lists created but have for some reason neglected them for a long time. The ideas you give here are definitely something that may help me “organize” and better use Twitter list. Thanks for even reminding me about them :)

I’ve always been aware of twitter lists but I haven’t used them. I think its because I keep my following list quite small because I don’t like it clogging up with people I’m not really interested in! But I can see the benefits of it so thanks for explaining!

Twitter lists are very under estimated if you ask me. It is a great way to organize the people you follow. In fact you just gave me some new ideas for twitter lists I should create :-)

We use Twitter lists all the time, admittedly we haven’t updated them for a while, but they are useful when we just want to see what a close group of friends are up to, rather than sifting through all the tweets on the home section on Twitter.
