There comes a time when those that actually never take the time to change the default image on Twitter have to go, the majority of the time these tweeters are spammers and from time to time you may want to unfollow them on Twitter if you have followed them using something like SocialOomph, but how can you do it?
Well this is how…..
I use a website called Refollow, now don’t be fooled by the name it has so many following and unfollowing options that you may not need anything else;)
Once you have logged in to Refollow by using Twitter OAuth you will have a selection of options you can make, by ticking the boxes you require, such as “Not Following”, “Never Followed”, “Not Following Me” etc.
For the purpose of this post, I’m going to show you how to unfollow on Twitter those that have no picture, meaning they still have the default Twitter logo.
So tick – “I’m Following” and “Without Picture” now the screen will display a section of Twitter with default images, if not go into the “Show Me” section and click both the mores, then Update View.
You can then select them to unfollow on Twitter, now remember to be cautious when unfollowing as you don’t want to get banned from Twitter, I usually find that unfollowing a page, 100 Twitters, in a 24 hours period is probably your best bet.
Tweaking the different boxes will give you different results, you could also unfollow those that haven’t tweeted in several days, or those that have not followed you back, it’s entirely up to you
UPDATE
Since posting this article back in April, refollow has now become a paid service, this was all due to Twitter changing their policies without informing developers, click on the image below to read the upgrade page from Refollow.

Thanks a lot I’ll give this a try, I always looking for ways to keep my twitter follow list current. Now with twitter list you can track and read someone’s post without having to follow them. That has both a good and a bad side. Hey there’s an idea for a blog post!

Interesting… I have never seen this service before. I always use Twitter Karma for somewhat mass unfollowing, but I’ll have to give this one a shot. It seems to have a lot more options!

Good tip. I guess I just prefer to not follow every single person that follows me so that I don’t have the problem of needing to go back and unfollow people later. Instead I simply follow people I meet in real life at conferences or friends and rarely if I see someone online providing value first then I’ll follow them.

I prefer not unfollowing people and i unfolow only if they spam or send me messages full of crap.
These auto follow and unfollow are not good if you are looking to make a quality presence.

There are other options such as searching through for search terms that you may think are dodgy and even using “crowd tags” to find spammers etc.

I try to follow people that tweet useful information. But it is hard to tell until you follow them.

Ouch, I am kinda getting excited and I mean really wanna test out refollow until you post that update Karen. It kills my excitement when all of a sudden it changed into a paid service. Anyhow, I will take a look at it and depends on what they can offer, I might subscribe to their service.

It is a shame they had to take this route, but they really didn’t have much choice when it came to Twitters demands.
Thanks for the update on Refollow. My question to you would be do you know of any other free program or I guess even a paid one that works just like refollow? I loved using refollow and am lost without it. Can you suggest any others? Thanks!

You could use Tweepi, it’s not exactly the same but similar or even ManageFlitter
